SPEECH STYLE: It depends on the audience, although some (read: Tiberius) have mentioned that poshness practically reeks through his words. In strictly business settings, Everett speaks quite formally in order to adhere to typical negotiation protocol. In others — such as casual business lunches, public appearances, and Capulet dealings — he adopts a more modified version of formality that’s casual enough to not sound stuffy, even if a bit of upper-class still seeps into his tone. Around those he’s comfortable with, Everett’s fond of teasing and can often be seen with a bit of a smirk on his lips. ACCENT: When speaking Italian, Everett has a slight Milanese accent similar to his mother’s (e.g. pronounces z as /s/ instead of /ts/, very quick, precise speech, vowels more at the front of his mouth). He learnt English from his father and speaks with a typical RP accent, although when he gets excited the inflection of his sentences and a few words here and there can seem a bit Italian. biography...

things come easy to james. he's the youngest child to a pair of wealthy, tenured professors. despite their interest in academia, they were perfectly content allowing james to cultivate his interest in art.

they did expect him to be more ambitious. after the parson's degree they offered to make introductions in the circles they knew to curators, gallery owners, etc. the tattoo artist thing is a bit. disappointing. but they don't bother him too much about it – they love him, and don't mind supporting him in the ways he needs (read: financially).

see, he's spoiled. and he knows it. he can afford his apartment because his parents bought it for him (it was less expensive than maintaining his manhattan apartment). he moved away because seeing the people he knew move forward in life with work, marriage, life made him feel uncomfortably still.

he's lazy, he has little motivation. he wanted to be somewhere that moved a little slower. the most he feels is in that moment when he's been trusted with someone's body and starts tattooing their skin, but aside from that can be pretty apathetic.

biography...

beth was born in west virginia, moved around a bit in her early years but eventually went to high school in hemlock springs, then left the town for several years. undergrad at yale, law school in columbia, then slowly moved up the ladder as a corporate lawyer based in chicago.

at 28, she married a defense attorney, henry smythe, who made her feel like the most interesting person in the world, like her thoughts were precious and meaningful. they were in love, she was so sure of it and grew even more certain after the birth of their son, kieran.

henry was an excellent father, they were the perfect family, it was practically cliche. so cliche that 7 years into marriage, beth recieved the lovely surprise of noticing a strange charge on their credit card bills.

the divorce goes through quickly, but beth still grapples with the fact that she had no idea when it started. when henry started taking more interest in the secretary on his desk than the wife in his bed. henry's long absences take on new meaning. the custody split means kieran visits henry in chicago one weekend a month.

beth chose hemlock springs because it is the one place of her life she didn't show to henry. it's lack of notability in her life suddenly made it the one place untainted by her failed marriage. she works downtown, but she likes raising kieran in the suburban areas. six years in, it really feels like home :)

after her mother's death when she was a child, her father became more indulgent. perhaps with most children, this could have resulted in her becoming spoiled. but it wasn't kiara's nature to ask for things needlessly. she asked for things they could share – fencing, chess, though she preferred one more than the other.

she knows her father worries about her. she'd had her fair share of admirers at her first season. her father had indulged her wish to delay her debut; he wasn't ready to let her go yet either. but at twenty four, on her second season...it would be ideal if she found a husband.

kiara met the baron at the first ball of the season, in lady danbury's conservatory (wanted connection to be posted!). he had returned from his studies, and was quite enchanted with kiara. they talked so long, the ball ended – he'd forgotten to ask her to dance! he didn't forget at the second, or the third. it was a quick engagement, and a marriage at the end of the season! the perfect story.

they don't know who is the reason why they've never been blessed with a child. but the strain becomes too much to bear; things were said in anger, both knew how to be cruel. eventually, the wounds were all they could feel, faults all they could see. kiara returned to her father's home.

sir kumar passed away last year. this is kiara's first season out of mourning.

"It would appear Brimsely has failed to bring it to me before it arrived for everyone else." She shot her valet a glare. "Have you read it yet?" She was hoping for a "no" as she hadn't yet layed eyes on its entirety, scanning for any mention of her own name, which it always was. All she could hope for, was that it was benign this issue.

after her mother's death when she was a child, her father became more indulgent. perhaps with most children, this could have resulted in her becoming spoiled. but it wasn't kiara's nature to ask for things needlessly. she asked for things they could share – fencing, chess, though she preferred one more than the other.

she knows her father worries about her. she'd had her fair share of admirers at her first season. her father had indulged her wish to delay her debut; he wasn't ready to let her go yet either. but at twenty four, on her second season...it would be ideal if she found a husband.

kiara met the baron at the first ball of the season, in lady danbury's conservatory (wanted connection to be posted!). he had returned from his studies, and was quite enchanted with kiara. they talked so long, the ball ended – he'd forgotten to ask her to dance! he didn't forget at the second, or the third. it was a quick engagement, and a marriage at the end of the season! the perfect story.

they don't know who is the reason why they've never been blessed with a child. but the strain becomes too much to bear; things were said in anger, both knew how to be cruel. eventually, the wounds were all they could feel, faults all they could see. kiara returned to her father's home.

sir kumar passed away last year. this is kiara's first season out of mourning.

Lillian had let out a quiet sigh when Cosimo had briefed her and Volumnia of their mission, relief brightening her eyes. The tenuous peace that had settled like an ill-fitting jacket upon Verona couldn’t last, this Lavinia knew. But she was glad to have no part in breaking it; the way she’d rationalized it, finding children who were alone, who needed help and providing them resources couldn’t be all that bad. When she’d lived in the more dangerous parts of town, she’d seen neighbor’s kids join and succeed. Some got hurt, but families were always taken care of – that couldn’t be so bad.

That was the way of Verona, at least for now, and perhaps this way, another girl would find an escape from fear. 

But Lillian was struggling to imagine the sort of youth who would be willing to join what technically was organized crime and would be a good fit for the Capulets. Her own recruitment had led her from inductee to emmissary immediately, due to her circumstances, skipping the position of soldier. As she left Don Capulet’s office, Nikes quiet against the floor, Lillian’s gaze snagged on the taller figure who’d just entered the Cathedral. She waited by the altar expectantly, speaking once he was a few yards away. 

“Buonasera Edgar,” Lavinia greeted, a gentle but serious look etched across her face. “How are you? I’ve not seen you recently.” Something like guilt, twisted in her stomach; she quelled it with the nihilist reminder that she couldn’t have done anything for anyone that horrific, violent night. But she should have stayed, a crueler voice whispers. It doesn’t quite manage to distract her from listening attentively to Everett’s response. Lillian stands tall, arms laced across her torso and chin up, determined to meet her colleague as an equal. “Actually, do you have a spare moment to talk?”
