A Jewish woman of Algiers, pregnant, and wearing a hat called a sarma. Jewish women typically had a black scarf on the sarma, and Moorish women had a coloured one. The hat was difficult to wear and heavy, so died out by the end of the century. (Louis Roguin, Algiers, c.1830-1840) Source https://ift.tt/qIdre7Q

Lead singer of Joy Division, Ian Curtis (Anton Corbijn, Manchester, UK, 1980). Curtis took his own life weeks later on May 18th. Joy Division were one of the most influential post-punk groups in Western pop culture. Curtis suffered from epilepsy and depression, and was dealing with the collapse of his marriage at the time of his death. Later, his bandmates claimed that the treatment of his epilepsy with barbiturates changed his personality and probably were the tipping point that drove him to take his own life. https://ift.tt/RgPDoCT

Map of the Late Bronze Age Collapse. There are many theories as to the causes of the collapse, which include climate change, geological events, economic collapse, the invasions of the Sea Peoples. The magnitude of the collapse was so great that most of the abandoned cities would never be inhabited again. Folk memories of the event influenced later culture, possibly including Plato's Atlantis. A Danish man who had used a metal detector for little more than a few hours has discovered a huge hoard of gold on his friend's land in a village in Denmark. There was no indication that the treasure would be there. It probably dates to the 500s, a time when many chieftains buried their gold as a result of ongoing famine due to a volcanic eruption. https://ift.tt/2RJwhLF

An ancient camel carving, in Saudi Arabia, believed to be 5,000-6,000 years old. They are unfortunately very eroded, but offer a glimpse into the culture here at a time when the region was covered in lakes and grassland. https://ift.tt/2RJwhLF

A Japanese sword-guard (tsuba, that rests between blade and handle to protect the hand). It is modelled after the legendary Buddhist monk Bodhidharma, with the inscription reading 'watch out for fire!', a warning seen on many Japanese objects at this time due to the high number of dense wooden buildings. The digitisation of the letters between Queen Victoria and her husband, Albert, is just about completed. They paint a picture of a stressed relationship with unusual frankness for a Victorian royal couple; one passage from Albert reads 'You have again lost your self-control quite unnecessarily. I did not say a word which could wound you and I did not begin the conversation, but you have followed me about and continued it from room to room.' https://ift.tt/2RJwhLF

The Nashtifan Windmills, Iran. About 1,000 years old, these vertical windmills are some of the earliest in the world. They are looked after by Ali Muhammed Etebari, and there is concern about what will happen to them when he is no longer able to maintain them. https://ift.tt/2RJwhLF
