my summer journey is watching friends from season 1 on thru the lens that ross geller is a closeted man who was so upset about the end of his lavender marriage bc he thought he n carol would hide together forever, but when she was brave enough to come out he wasn’t leaving him an angry swirl of bitterness internalized homophobia & fear. it’s also important to remember that carol was the first and only person he’d been intimate w (n not incredibly often) so when his security as a Heterosexual Man was at stake, he immediately latched on to rachel to obsess over (someone he possibly thought was out of his league and unattainable) to fill that space. this unhealthy cycle curated toxic behaviors towards women in general bc he’s so deeply unhappy w himself, & maybe deep down he doesn’t want his relationships to be successful so it’s a subconscious form of self sabotage. anyways. just a working theory
