Cost of Project
Now that some of the design work is completed, it’s vital that we gather an estimation of how much this project would cost to produce.

Additional References: Exterior of Prison
The sentient prison is located in the Arctic region. It is large and menacing, towering above the sea level.
The outside texture is formed out of a web of gold-painted steel like the design shown in the second image.

Additional References: Inside Cell
The inside of the cell needs to be both spacious and luxurious. It needs to hold everything one needs for mental and physical development, such as a gym, library, stereo etc.
The main outskirts of the cell reflect the interior of the Pantheon in order to keep a reference to the original poem. However, it is a lot more metallic, like it’s made from shavings of aluminium stuck together.
Most of the equipment is given a steampunk type look, however, this is only the current style. When the man was younger, the cell was very minimalistic, but as he matured he desired something different and the prison adhered to his demands.

Additional References: Old Man
In order to help me finalise a design for the old man, I’ve grabbed some of these images as references.
I wanted the man's body to depict his progress as a person. So what I thought about doing, was to use the picturesque body of an older Frank Zane and cover it in poorly designed tattoos which the man would’ve received when he was a young degenerate.

With the story in place, I then began trying to nail down what the aesthetic of my project would be. This was done by creating a mood board.
After finalising this mood board, I have concluded that the desired aesthetic of this project will be an abstraction from the original designs of Vitruvius. His influence will be noticeable to the viewer, however, there will be a loss of relatability via the incorporation of vibrant colours, lighting and distortions. This is to assure that there will be a contrast between the undesired ‘regular’ world outside and the personal heaven which has been built by the prison in accordance with the elderly prisoners evolving tastes.
Given the lack of interaction that happens between characters in this story, the environment will play an important role in conveying the characters' emotions as well as the personal journey that occurs within the prison.

After brainstorming on paper, I was then able to turn the scribbles into a proper synopsis for my project.

Now, given that our task was to form a project that is inspired by a given piece, it was important for me to retain the essence of the original work. In order to make sure this was achieved, I started scribbling up a mind map until I found an appropriate storyline. The method I mainly used in order to derive my story was to simply substitute some of the keywords; as well as use some of them as prompts for visual inspiration.

First I had to choose one of the poems from Edward Lear’s ‘Book of Nonsense’ as the source of inspiration for my film. I chose the poem, ‘Old Man of Vesuvius’. The poem explores the impacts of losing one's sense of education and beauty.

Introduction
This blog is a portfolio about the conceptual development for a short animated film as part of my unit, ‘KNB136 - Visual Storytelling: Production Design’. Throughout the blog, there will be a series of files which highlight my thought process and overall development of this film; such as thumbnails, mood boards, concept art etc.
