The fact is that he found himself now in a very strange position, to say the least of it. He was also here, gentlemen -- that is, not at the dance, but almost at the dance; he was 'all right, though; he could take care of himself,' yet at this moment he was a little astray; he was standing at that moment, strange to say -- on the landing of the back stairs to Olsufy Ivanovich's flat. But it was 'all right' his standing there; he was 'quite well.' He was standing in a corner, huddled in a place which was not very warm, though it was dark, partly hidden by a huge cupboard and an old screen, in the midst of rubbish, litter, and odds and ends of all sorts, concealing himself for the time being and watching the course of proceedings as a disinterested spectator.
Fyodor Dostoyevsky, The Double
why am i still chuckling about dostoyevsky's description in "the double," shortly after Golyadkin is told he's not allowed into Olsufy Ivanovich's party, in which dostoyevsky spends four pages writing extensively about the exuberance and wonder of the high society party and ball; how polite and properly spoken each lady and officer was, how such a grand ball makes one believe true goodness and morality can be achieved; how the champagne glasses sparkled; how the champagne itself tasted more like nectar of the gods; how happy and genuinely 'good' people there were... four pages beautifully describing this aristocratic event, and then dostoyevsky cuts to Golyadkin, creepily huddling right outside the host's house in the shadows, hiding in the darkness, hovering around on the outskirts of high society, muttering to himself. I can't do it justice... I'm still laughing about how perfect that transition was
