one time back when i was teaching in tokyo the kids told me really excitedly that it was yōshoku for lunch in the canteen. i didn’t actually know what this meant at the time but i knew from the kanji that shoku was food and yō got used as a prefix to mean ‘western style X’ (e.g. clothes), so i had a vague idea. i figured it was a broad category but might be like… pasta? burgers? potatoes of some kind? bread? unclear but i figured that, as much as i was enjoying japanese food, it might be nice to have something more like what i’d eat at home to mix it up

then i went to the canteen and they put on my plate:

one forkful of spaghetti mixed with what i thought was a normal red sauce, turned out to be plain ketchup

a singular hamburger patty (no bun, condiments or anything else just the meat patty) (not a good one)

about 3 chunks of lettuce leaves

two slices of cucumber

i cannot express how sad this plate looked. i just stared at it. and then all the kids came over to me like

'eloise-sensei look it's western food right? like foreigners eat? do you eat this every day at home? is it good?'

and i had to fight back the tears and be like hahahaha. yeah. um it's a bit different. but yeah oishii. so good. definitely.

the way that there are definitely 100% heterosexual cisgender men who'd be exclusive bottoms and women who'd be exclusive tops if the culture around sex wasn't "man = top, woman = bottom" fucks me up whenever i think about it.

if you're a cis straight person reading this and sex has always felt like A Task To Complete or has felt awful and painful emotionally for you; you don't have to exist within this obligatory sexual binary. you can have sex in ways that feel safe and affirming and not in the way that you're "supposed to". it will be difficult but i know you can do it.

while we're feeling nostalgic here's my review of some of the chain restaurants i went to most often when i lived in tokyo:

saizeriya: i love u saizeriya. comically cheap for what is like, not GOOD italian food, but perfectly acceptable and modest portions of pizza/pasta/etc. great option for hiding out in at 4 in the morning when you're drunk and waiting for the morning train- you will see several businessmen full on asleep at their tables and the staff will not bother them one bit. also you can get a 1.5l bottle of wine for 1000 yen. but watch out ☝️

coco ichibanya: 💯💯💯💯💯 consistent and tasty and i like the fact you can change the amount of rice and spice level to your preference very flexibly. at one point in my life my blood was at least 2% katsu curry for how much i ate it

mos burger: not my favourite but for some reason my friends and i got it every time we were hungover after going clubbing and so i associate it with sleep deprived but joyful sunday mornings. i liked the little baskets they give you and the paper holding bag thing they had for the chicken

yoshinoya: people love yoshinoya but i never got the hype. there's better rice bowl places around basically anywhere. sukiya is kind of the same. like obviously they're objectively better than you'll get in like any uk restaurant but for japanese food standards? you can do better

denny's: gets a shout out purely for this tomato spaghetti with mascarpone that they used to do that AND also their pancakes. i got this same order every single time and i cannot rate anything else on their menu. also they don't do the pasta anymore i think so that's sad. very different from american dennys

ichiran: incredibly overrated and from what i've heard has become kind of a tourist attraction because of the whole ordering/solo seating system, which like, i understand is a fun novelty at first, but it's really not worth it. i've heard of people queuing for ichiran since it became more well known and that is insane. respect yourself

kua aina: i only ever went to the one restaurant they had in ikebukuro but oh my god their burgers and fries here were so good. pokemon center > kua aina > arcades and then back home was a good evening

uobei: my go-to first meal out when friends came to visit. cheap sushi delivered by a little shinkansen style train? always a killer.

and of course a special shout out to every convenience store's fried chicken and steamed buns. famichiki you'll always be famous

People still tend to lump JK Rowling in with the category of ~problematic artists~ and I need everyone to understand that is not the problem with her. She is not comparable to anyone who wrote a piece of fiction you hate, or someone who made rude comments in 2015 and has since learned better.

She is far more like Elon Musk. She is a radicalized person with an extreme amount of social and financial power, and for YEARS she has been using that power to try to influence her government into hurting vulnerable people, on purpose. And she has succeeded. THAT is the problem with her, and THAT is why spending money on her books is so dangerous, not because her books aged badly.

Critiquing her work is fine, of course (I personally was never a fan so I really don’t care) but you NEED to understand that fiction is not the main issue here. And I truly think acting like she’s the same as the rest of any giant list of ~problematic creators of the week~ waters down how dangerous she is.
