Week 12 Crowdsourcing in times of crisis
Hey guys!😆 Today we are diving into some cool topic which is crowdsourcing! Did you ever wonder what crowdsourcing is and how it works? Well, why not let’s explore this amazing topic together!
Tumblr media
In today's digital world, crowdsourcing has become a very important and useful method in gathering real-time information especially during crisis time. So, what is crowdsourcing? Crowdsourcing is the practice of getting services, information or ideas by gathering contributions from a large online community instead of relying on traditional workers or suppliers. One of the most common applications that are used for everyday crowdsourcing are Waze. It is a navigation application that users share real-time traffic information such as roadblocks, accidents and police presence and to suggest the fastest routes to other users (Laor & Galily, 2022). With this crowdsourced information, drivers are able to avoid traffic jams and accidents that happen on that day, making their travel more smooth and fast. Similarly, Google Maps, which acquired nearly 64 million users, helps users to navigate by providing the shortest and most convenient routes in reaching their destination (Mehta, Kanani & Lande, 2019).
Tumblr media
Crowdsourcing plays an important role during the major crisis where quick and accurate information could save lives. For example, during the 2010 Haiti earthquake, the platform Ushahidi was used to collect and map real-time reports from people through SMS, email and social media. About thousands of volunteers and locals send reports about damage and urgent needs. This information helps the rescue teams to identify and locate the damaged areas and the survivors more easily and effectively. According to Dave (2017), crowdsourced crisis mapping platforms like Ushahidi enhance disaster response by offering real-time and location-based information that might take official channels hours or even days to confirm.
Tumblr media
In Malaysia, a recent and highly relevant example of crowdsourcing is during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Malaysian government has introduced digital applications such as MySejahtera to track and control the spread of viruses. This application is compulsory to be used by every Malaysian during the pandemic where it allows users to check in the locations, helping the health authorities to identify the situation of users in real time and give announcements and alerts as fast as possible. This application enables faster tracing and is more efficient for pandemic management.
In conclusion, crowdsourcing is an essential tool during a crisis as it helps to speed up the time in gathering the important information from worldwide, finding volunteers and resources more effectively. In this technological advanced world, crowdsourcing will still continue being a key part in managing emergencies around the world. Let us continue to support and use the crowdsourcing platform wisely to build a safer and stronger community in the future! ✨

Week 11 Digital Citizenship and Conflict: Social Media Governance
Hello guys!😆The topic that we will be unlocking now is about digital citizenship, social media governance and the conflict that happens online.📱
Tumblr media
In today’s technologically advanced world, digital citizenship is an important element for us during online. Digital citizenship refers to those who use the Internet effectively and regularly (Jabeen & Ahmad, 2021). It means that users use the internet and digital technology in a responsible, respectful and a safer way. It can shape our identity online through our online behavior. A person with good digital citizenship tends to communicate and interact with others politely, giving respect to others and thinking carefully before sharing information and commenting on others’ posts. They also understand how to protect their own personal data as well as to avoid spreading false information to the public. And of course, cyberbullying is one of the actions that definitely not be done by a good digital citizen. Digital citizenship education promotes safe and healthy online behavior while encouraging people to be proactive, thoughtful and respectful in online content creation (Tadlaoui-Brahmi, Çuko & Alvarez, 2022).
When we come across to social media governance, it refers to the formal or informal systems that oversee and regulate the actions and behavior of members of an organization within the social media environment (Soens & Claeys, 2025). It is to create a safe social media environment so that users can express themselves without fear of abuse. It also aims to reduce hate speech, spreading false information and online violence. Additionally, platform governance includes content moderation and legal regulations which helps in preventing harmful activities and to protect users and maintain trust in social media spaces.
Tumblr media
There are several types of online conflicts which include cyberbullying, hate speech, online harassment, doxing and trolling. Among all of these online conflicts, cyberbullying is the most serious case that happens as the situation is alarming and has been increasingly linked to a rising number of suicide cases (Rashid, 2024). According to Kee, Anwar & Vranjes (2023), Malaysia ranks second in Asia for cyberbullying problems. If people still did not use social media wisely, it can lead to more emotional harm, damage to reputation and even mental health problems, and thus leading to rise of suicide cases. Social harassment can also create a toxic online environment where users are afraid to express themselves or participate in discussions.
In conclusion, we must use social media wisely in order to become good and responsible digital citizens. Think wisely before posting, commenting and sharing. Let’s work together to make social media a safer and peaceful place where you can express yourself without fear!

Week 10 Gaming Communities, Social Gaming and Live Streaming
Hi guys! 🤩Today we are going to talk about gaming communities, social gaming and live streaming.🎮I think everyone are familiar with games as it also plays an important role in our daily lives, creating fun and releasing stress.
Tumblr media
Gaming communities, social gaming and live streaming have become important in today’s digital advanced world. Video game is an interactive experience between a player, a digital screen-based device, and potentially other players (Arjoranta, 2019). Online forums and fan groups like Reddit, Discord and Steam are popular places where gamers can discuss and share about their love games with people having the same interest. These platforms allow them to express their personalities through elements like usernames, avatars and the way they communicate and interact online. People can find friends who share the same interests through the platforms and play games together, making it more enjoyable.
Gaming communities are also important for certain people as they provide emotional support. Many gamers or players search for emotional support and mental health advice from their online friends. As noted by Kowert & Oldmeadow (2013), up to 75% of gamers say that they have formed meaningful friendships within their gaming community. Thus, they can give advice and tips on dealing with stress as they feel more connected through the same interests, understand each other’s needs and can offer more suitable support. Not only that, fans might also get emotional support from their favourite gamers too! These support are very helpful especially for individuals who are introverted and afraid to seek help in real-life. Playing online games together with their friends helps to relax while forgetting their problems at the same time.
Tumblr media
As we come to social gaming, it refers to playing video games that are designed to encourage interaction and connection within the players. These games involve actions like teaming up and competing with each other. Multiplayer games such as Fortnite, Roblox and Minecraft allow players to work together, make friends and connect with each other while playing. The teamwork builds strong friendships, even if everyone lives in a different country. Also, online games connect players globally in which players can learn about different cultures such as how the people talk and their living habits.
Live streaming is also another major aspect of gaming today. It is a new type of social platform that combines video content, real-time interaction and user engagement that allow people to interact with each other instantly (Huang et al., 2023). Platforms such as Twitch and Youtube Gaming allow players to livestream their gameplay and to interact with their fans and viewers through the live chat. Ruiz (2020) noted that Twitch is one of the most popular live streaming platforms. Their fans will engage with them by watching their gameplay livestream frequently. Some streamers even become famous and build large communities of fans worldwide and they earn money through ads and sponsorships through the streaming platforms. There are many famous game streamers in Malaysia such us KasualPlayz, Soloz and Master Ramen. Streaming can be an enjoyable job but it can also be challenging at the same time as it is needed to maintain the viewer's interest and face online pressure.
To conclude, gaming communities, social gaming and live streaming plays an important role in our daily life as it allows people to make friends, get mentally support and even start new careers. It is a place that creates fun and laughter as well as connecting people all over together.

Week 9 Digital Citizenship and Software literacy: Instagram Filters
Tumblr media
Hello guys!🤩So moving forward we will be diving into a fun and interesting topic which is Instagram Filters. I am sure that most of you are very familiar with it, whether in using it to take a selfie or enhancing your photos before posting it on your social media.
Tumblr media
Instagram is a social media platform that is famous and being used worldwide. It includes features like Instagram filters which allows users to change the way their photos or videos look. There are 600 million people who use AR filters each month on Instagram or Facebook while 76% of Snapchat users using them everyday (Javornik. Et al., 2022). It offers a variety of options for changing colour, tones and even facial expressions by adding some cute stickers on it. Not only that, it also came out with game challenges where users are allowed to play the challenges using the filters. It helps to build the community and everyone able to connect with each other as users all over the world are joining the challenges. As for digital citizenship and software literacy, it means to use the digital tools and understanding how to use it in order to use it in a safe, wise and respectful way.
By using the Instagram filters, it can bring both positive and negative impact towards the users. Positive impact of using Instagram filters is where it boosts confidence among the users. It allows users to post themselves in a creative and polished way on social media which helps them to feel more comfortable while sharing their photos online. While on the opposite sides, filters can create unrealistic beauty standards. This will cause users to have appearance anxiety where they tend to pursue perfect looking online. Overuse of Instagram filters can also harm mental health and cause low self-esteem while they are not confident of their appearance in real life without adding any filters. This is more likely to happen among females. Wang (n.d.) noted that young females often use Instagram filters before posting their photos to make themselves look more attractive before other followers on social media.
Tumblr media
As we come to Augmented Reality (AR), it is a technology that improves our physical surroundings through the utilization of computer-generated content (Al-ansi et al., 2023). AR filters were firstly created for entertainment and enjoyment in social media platforms. It then became a powerful tool for image enhancement which enabled users to enhance features such as their eyes, cheekbones, eyelashes and skin (Kumar & Madhushree Nanda Agarwal, 2023). Besides that, famous brands like Gucci also used the AR to create filters for their brands. Gucci creates Instagram features that owns its unique style, brand image and includes some of its products like earrings and necklaces with the aim to connect more with its audience as well as to increase visibility by encouraging users to share content using the filters (deusens, n.d.).
To conclude, Instagram filters are fun and creative when it helps in enhancing our photos. However, we should use it wisely and understand the impact of using Instagram filters in order to become a good digital citizen. By using them wisely, we get to enjoy social media in a healthy and positive way! ✨

Week 8 Body Modification on Visual Social Media
Tumblr media
Hi guys!😉Today’s topic will be talking about body modification on visual social media. As we know that Social Media plays an important role in our daily lives. Social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok have given a huge impact on people and shaping today’s beauty standards. These platforms have made the beauty trend spread fast all over the world and raise the world’s demand for beauty.
The aesthetic templates, also known as the beauty standard are often different among male and females. It is a look or style that people often follow in order to become attractive or trendy especially on social media platforms. It usually includes features such as hair and makeup style as well as their body shape and face features. On social media, female beauty templates often highlight enhanced features especially in areas like lips, jawline, cheeks and waist. As for males, they often have enhanced features like a fit body and sharp jawline.
Tumblr media
(Source: Pinterest)
Body modification is using any method to make permanent changes to the body where people usually do it for personal, cultural or for beauty reasons. It refers to all (semi-)permanent changes made to the body such as piercings, tattoos, tongue splitting, cranial binding and plastic surgery (Weiler, Mühlenbeck & Jacobsen, 2024). Of course, body modifications could bring advantages and disadvantages at the same time! Body modification brings advantages including cosmetic surgery and non-surgical procedures where it allows individuals to align their appearance to match their personal style or the beauty trends. These can help them to boost their level of confidence and build self-esteem. On the other hand, individuals that pursue a perfect look can lead to body dissatisfaction and mental health struggles where they stress over their appearance, keep comparing themselves to others.
South Korea has one of the highest rates of cosmetic surgery. According to the International Society of Aesthetic Plastics Surgery (ISAPS), South Korea has the highest number of cosmetic procedures per person, with about 13.5 procedures per 1000 people (Yoon & Kim, 2019). Another example of celebrities that have body modification is Kylie Jenner, who is known for her plump lips. Her changes were noticeable and have led to a global trend where women and men did cosmetic surgery to get the same look (Ajayi, 2025).
Thus, the Public Health Campaign is one of the important social movements that can be done in society. Campaigns like #bodypositivity is a social movement that promotes a positive views on all bodies size, shape, skin tone and other characteristics. This movement aims to promote self-love and to encourage confidence among everyone with different characteristics on their appearance.
In conclusion, social media has a huge influence on how people see beauty all over the world. Body modifications can boost confidence while also leading to pressure and mental issues. Hence, public health campaigns are important as it reminds people to accept and love ourselves no matter how we look.

Week 7 Social Media Influencers and Slow Fashion Movement
Hi guys!✨ Today’s topic will be talking about Social Media Influencers and the Slow Fashion Movement! I am sure many of you have your own favourite fashion styles and go-to outfits that express who you are. So without further ado, let’s get started with our topic!
Tumblr media
Slow fashion is a way of making clothes that are good towards people and the earth. The clothes are made carefully and are using eco-friendly materials so that they would last longer. Although slow fashion produces fewer amounts, it possesses high quality products. Slow fashion encourages people to buy less but at higher quality that is durable (Jung & Jin, 2014). According to Suhud (2020), slow fashion aims to combine eco-friendly, ethical and sustainable fashion into one movement that could meet our needs while allowing the earth to regenerate naturally. In contrast, the fast fashion industry is more focused on producing disposable and cheaper clothes that often bring harm to the environment which is very different from slow fashion.
Tumblr media
(Source: Google)
Famous brands like Patagonia are known for their high quality and sustainable outdoor clothing. It uses recycled materials that caused less harm to the environment and was focusing on promoting the importance of the environment as well as to address the environmental crisis.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Caroline Gleich is the Patagonia ambassador which helps to promote their products through her interesting and amazing posts that are posted on her social media platform. She is a professional ski mountaineer and a climate activist. She uses her social media platforms to talk about climate change, sustainability and the importance of protecting the environment. Her post and action have given a big impact and motivation to the people. Not only Caroline has been promoting the slow fashion movement, there are also a lot of other influencers from different countries that are promoting and raising awareness to protect the environment.
In order to save the environment, all of us should start making our moves in buying slow fashion products. We should buy less and choose better products. Instead of purchasing multiple cheap and low quality products, buying high quality and sustainable products is a better choice. Besides that, buying clothing from secondhand and thrift shops was also another way to protect the environment. Thrift stores offer an affordable and eco-friendly alternative to traditional consumption habits by offering high-quality clothing at a lower prices (Hedge et al., 2023). You will get to buy nice and cheaper secondhand clothes and it could help reduce waste to the earth.
In conclusion, social media influencers play an important role in promoting the slow fashion movement to the public. Slow fashion movement is important too as it helps to reduce waste and save the environment by using the sustainable materials for the clothing. Hence, all of us should start making our decisions wisely in buying the slow fashion clothes to make a better world and environment.

Week 6 What is Digital Citizenship? Hashtag Publics, Political Engagement and Activism
Hi guys!🤩Today's topic will be discussing about digital citizenship and hashtags. I think all of you are familiar with hashtags which most people will be adding hashtags under their captions before they post their post on social media.
As we are in the technological advanced world, everyone can access online easily, posting their thoughts and daily life online. Hence, having a digital citizenship manner is important for everyone in their daily life. If you are wondering what digital citizenship is, it is a term that describes those who use the Internet effectively and regularly (Jabeen & Ahmad, 2021). It is a concept that means using the technology and digital platforms in a responsible, safe and respectful manner. It includes protecting own personal information, communicating with each other online respectfully, using information online wisely, engaging positively as well as to avoid harmful behaviors such as cyberbullying and spreading fake information. Having good digital citizenship tends to make more friends and to foster a positive impression online.
Tumblr media
Next will be discussing about hashtag publics. Hashtags are short words or phrases with a hash or pound sign (#) in front, people use them on social media to support causes, keep track of related posts and enable users to see and join the conversation even if they do not know the issues (Saxton et al., 2015). When you use hashtags on your post, it will become more visible and searchable by other users that are interested in this topic even if they do not follow your account on the platforms. Hence, hashtags have become widely used by internet users to share information during emergency or crisis response (Ta’amneh & Al-Ghazo, 2021). As we can see, hashtags are mostly used in platforms such as Instagram, Twitter and Facebook where people use it to share their information or even to voice out for themselves in some crisis. This was able to build community where anyone who just clicked on the hashtags were able to see all the public posts with the hashtags and give comments on it.
Tumblr media
Hashtags such as #MeToo and #BlackLiveMatter has been used by the users globally and has become a well-known topic as you can see from the picture above. #MeToo is a social movement and awareness campaign where people publicize their experiences about sexual abuse and sexual harassments. As for #BlackLivesMatter, it is a movement that highlights racism, discrimination and racial inequality experienced by black people as well as to promote anti-racism. Through the hashtags used by the users, it helps people to get connected and support each other even if they are from different countries. We can also see that it helps to increase the visibility of the content by reaching a wider audience and to build awareness among the audiences by using hashtags.
Tumblr media
Activism is the movement designed to gain public attention towards the serious social issues in order to make positive changes. (Zourou, Potolia, & Oikonomou, 2024) It is an action where people take action to make the world a better place. For examples, hashtags like #MeToo, #BlackLivesMatter and #ClimateAction that has been used worldwide is the action that helps each other to improve and support the community from all over the world. In addition, Parsons (2016) says that activism plays an important role as it has helped raise awareness of important issues like environmental or conservation threats or civil rights issues.
To conclude, hashtags play an important role in today’s digital world. Utilizing them wisely, thoughtfully and actively participating in activism can be part of being a responsible digital citizen and are able to create positive changes.

Week 5 Digital Community and Fandom
Hey there!😉This is my very first blog in tumblr and I hope you enjoy it!✨
So, today’s topic will be diving into the digital community and fandom. In today's technologically advanced world, we tend to be more active online and share our interests and daily life on social media platforms. It is also where we will be finding something we like and are interested in like books, movies, shows, music or even pictures of your favourite celebrities. “Fandom” is a term that refers to a group of people who share the same passion on the same things like movies, books, music, or well-known celebrities (Hermawan & Ginting, 2024). Fandom brings people all over the world together with similar interests and makes them feel connected, whether in person or online.
There are also some fandom websites like Reddit and Fandom that provide a platform for the fans to connect and share news as well as creating creative contents with each other on the same subject they love.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As you can see from the picture below, fandom creates their own supporting projects to boost the visibility and show support to their favourite celebrities. These supportive moments strengthen the community bonds as the fans from all over the world are eager to visit and take pictures together.
Tumblr media
(source: Xiaohongshu)
Tumblr media
When we come across to Reality TV, it is a TV program that documents unscripted real-life occurrences (Suri & Sansanwal, 2022). Most of the reality tv shows have their own fan base that gives huge support to this reality tv show. For example, “Running Man” and “Hell’s Kitchen” gained a lot of fans from different countries. The fans will actively participate by creating videos, memes and other forms of content that were inspired by their fandom. Social media platforms such as Instagram and TikTok are where we could find it and share our thoughts, and of course get the latest news and gossip. It also plays an important role where it is more convenient for fans to interact with their idols and to organize different activities. (Jia, Li & Ma, 2021) This is where it creates digital public where everyone can share their thoughts and connect with each other in a fun and creative way.
In conclusion, digital communities and fandoms have changed the way on how we connect, share and express ourselves online. They have created a place where people can meet others who share the same interests, build strong relationships and to join and create conversations with people globally. Through social networking, we can see the changes in how people create their identities, how the trends spread and how we connect with the people, making the online world become an important part of our daily lives.
