On April 25th 1852 an earthquake lasting several seconds shook Comrie in Perthshire, accompanied by an ominous rumbling.
Lying on the highland fault line where the highlands meet the lowlands little earthquakes are frequent and have earned Comrie the nickname, 'Shaky Toon.'
Despite this country not being generally associated with earthquakes or tremors, Scotland actually housed the world’s first seismometer, which was built and installed in Comrie - one of the most geologically active areas in the British Isles.
The first earthquake in Comrie was recorded as far back as 1788, and an early seismometer installed in the village in 1840.
Built on a rocky outcrop (so it directly experiences any tremors), in a field to the west of the village, Comrie is also home to Earthquake House, one of Europe’s smallest listed buildings.
It was once a centre for seismology, recording tremors that were common to the area in the 19th century.
Built in 1869, it was the first purpose-built earthquake observation centre in the world - just a shame it was built a few decades too late, as seismic activity had declined in the area by the time it was built. It is said that during the 1830s, 7,300 earth tremors were recorded in the area.
In 1816 an earthquake took place, so fierce, it was felt over much of Scotland.
Lasting six minutes, an Inverness sailor claimed he was “tossed on his bed, as he had never been tossed out at sea, for five full minutes.”
In 1839. measuring an estimated 4.8 on the Richter scale, another powerful quake was felt across the country.
Many houses in Comrie were damaged and the impact caused a dam near Stirling to fail.
Known as the Great Earthquake of 1839, the action prompted postmaster Peter Macfarlane and shoemaker James Drummond, known as the ‘Comrie Pioneers’, to set up an instrument to measure earthquakes and began keeping formal records.
Earthquake House is one of Europe’s smallest listed buildings.
Built in 1869, it was the first purpose-built earthquake observation centre in the world.
Unfortunately it was built a few decades too late - by the time engineers at the house were able to read tremors more accurately, they became much less frequent.
In 1869 a fresh set of tremors momentarily renewed interest in earthquakes.
By 1911 technology had moved on, and the building became redundant.
The building was refurbished in 1988 after falling into neglect, and remains active - a modern seismograph, and a model of an early wooden seismoscope invented by Robert Mallett are installed at the house.

The Death Toll of the Earthquake that hit Turkey and Syria may have reached 20,000 people, and that’s outside of all those who are injured and lost.
If you could donate PLEASE do!!!
Here’s a post full of charities you could donate to, but I’ll add my own trustworthy ones here:
Islamic Relief:  teams are on the ground right now providing emergency food assistance, shelter, medical supplies to hospitals and clinics, as well as blankets and tents for those made homeless by the quake in Turkey and Syria
Molham: The team at Molham are currently on the ground helping displaced families in Turkey and Syria who have been affected by the earthquake
The White Helmets: The team are on the ground in Northwest Syria searching for survivors and removing the dead from the rubble.
MSF: remaining in close contact with the local authorities in northwestern Syria and with the authorities in Turkey to extend their support where it’s needed. They’re providing essential life kits to displaced people in the region
please PLEASE reblog. Syria and Turkiye need our help!!!

PLEASE do not donate to kızılay.org because they are literally frauds and they don't use the donations for victims and they pocket the money! instead donate to https://ahbap.org/bagisci-ol
their swift code for payment from abroad: “ISBKTRIS”
p.s. i know kızılay is a government agency but our government officials are frauds and ahbap.org is a charity of haluk levent, a turkish singer and philanthropist and every turkish people knows that he's a good person.

hey everyone. turkey has been struck by a very strong earthquake around four am. even now, many regions are being struck still. the weather is cold and snowy and people had to leave their homes. many people have lost their lives (edit: it’s been reported that the number is 1004 now (edit: more than 1500) (edit: more than 2000) (edit: more than 3000) (edit: 5434) (edit: more than 12.000 peope have lost their lives) (edit: more than 34.000 people have lost their lives) (edit: more than 40.000 people have lost their lives) (edit: more than 9000 injured people) (edit: 22.000 injured people) (edit: 31.777) (edit: more than 62.000 people are injured) and there are many people who are stuck under the wrecks (edit: number unkown) it has been reported that around two thousand buildings have collapsed and keep collapsing (edit: more than 9000) turkey has declared a fourth level alert state. the ‘’level 4’’ alarm condition includes an international call for help. if you can and would like to, this is the most reliable organization you can donate to:
(ps: akad and red crescent are not trusted by turkish locals. especially afad because they are lying about the help they send and the number of people. please refrain from donating to them. AHBAP is the most trustworthy organization that sends help immediately).
((please do not hesitate to contact me if you need help with the website/language while donating))
(((1€ and 1$ almost equal to 20 turkish lira. so even a little amounts means a lot to us.)))
((((it has been reported that around 194.000 people are under the wrecks and still waiting to be rescued))))
(((((people are sharing notices of victims who are still under the wrecks and waiting to be rescued on twitter ever since the earthquake and turkish government officially announced that they are banning twitter. this is the reason why we don’t want you to donate to afad and red crescent; they only listen to the government. they don’t care about the people.)))))

I've seen a lot of posts bringing attention to the devastating earthquake that hit Turkey and Syria, but with a focus mainly on Turkey, so allow me to talk about Syria.
The earthquake hit several areas of Syria (Aleppo, Idlib, Latakia, Hama, and Tartus) that were already devastated by war over the past 13 years. As of me writing this post, there are over 1700 people dead in Syria alone, and hundreds injured and wounded, not counting people still stuck under the rubble. I'm too emotionally drained to try to appeal to people's humanity, but please take a moment to look through the following sources of Syrian people reporting directly from Syria, and help if you can.
Syrian accounts reporting Syrian news in English and Arabic:
mashrouwanabqa
mysyria_
Post with some resources to help
And some western news articles to confirm what I'm saying:
News article with campaigns and organisations to donate to
Same news and places to donate from the New York Times
And perhaps most importantly, I ask you to read up on sanctions on Syria and educate yourself on the slow, painful genocide Syrians are suffering at the hand of Western countries. No electricity, gas, or medicine reaching the Syrian people for 13 years now. No economy allowed to flourish. No hope for the Syrian people under these sanctions to survive normal every day life or a cold winter, let alone disaster of this magnitude. There's a campaign to stop the sanctions on Syria, but it's led by Syrians when we are the least able to affect this type of change. Read on it. Talk to your representatives if you can and demand for sanctions to be dropped and help put stop to this. Just look through the Syrian accounts I linked for more perspective. Thank you.

for once again. two devastating earthquakes happened in turkey and people need your help. it's been 3 days and there are still people buried alive and about to die any minute but you can save them.
1. DON'T DONATE to kızılay.org (red cross) > why? because although they're a legit government organization, they've been pocketing donations and earthquake taxes since 1999 gölcük earthquake. there are thousands of articles about them on the internet and every turkish people asks the same question: "what happened to the earthquake special taxes in turkey?"
2. DONATE TO
Ahbap Charity (charity of Turkish singer and philanthropist Haluk Levent, very reliable person) > https://ahbap.org/disasters-turkey
Haytap Animal Rights Federation (for animals affected by the earthquake) > https://fonzip.com/haytap/bagis
AFAD (Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency) > https://en.afad.gov.tr/earthquake-donation-accounts
1 dollar = 18 liras / 1 euro = 20 liras

Gound cracking and bubbling during the 7.6 magnitude earthquake in Japan

oh my god, i just read some news about an earthquake in turkey, are you okay??
hello anon, thank you for checking in with me! I'm thankfully not that close to Kahramanmaraş where the M7.7 earthquake happened, me and my family made it out of our building safely and were only frightened.
For those who don't know, the southern part of Turkey (Kahramanmaraş as the epicenter) along with northern Syria were hit by an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.7 followed by aftershocks and another wave of a 7.6 magnitude hours later. I cannot speak for what's happening in Syria but they are in dire need of help as well.
The entire region is devastated with more than 3000 deaths (and counting, news channels are hiding the real amount, or so they say) and 10s of thousands of injured and an unfathomable amount of people still stuck under the rubble, it has left hundreds of thousands homeless. The earthquake hit 4 a.m. at night, so many were caught defenseless and disoriented in their sleep.
The damage is this unbelievably devastating because the southeastern areas are criminally underdeveloped, and help cannot get anywhere in time due to collapsed roads and because the ratio of helpers to those who are in need of help are severely lacking. In some areas, people have been waiting for help for an entire day now, and no government aid has arrived.
We are in the middle of a snowstorm and people are dying of hypothermia if not from fallen buildings. Don't go searching for these videos if you're faint of heart, but I have to say that people are sending help calls and videos from under the rubble, some cities and towns still haven't received any support at all and people are still under rubble. The way their loved ones are trying to lift rocks and debris with their own hands is just... saying it's extremely upsetting is an understatement. The numbers of collapsed buildings and those fighting for life under are unfathomable.
It's so bad that Turkey has declared a state four level emergency, it's an international call for help.
Thoughts and prayers are heartwarming and mean a lot, but if you're able to donate just one dollar/euro or anything at all, please do. Turkish Lira is at an all time low right now, we are in the middle of an economic crisis. Imagine some currency is 20 dollars each, that's how bad it is.
1 dollar = 18 turkish liras 1 euro = 20 turkish liras
Therefore, this kind of money is lifechanging right now, so don't feel bad you aren't doing anything by donating so little, you're making considerable change. If you're able to help, please help.
Here are places you can donate to and explanations of the work they do
