This was an interesting read. Surprisingly nonpreachy given the subject; and well worth the time.

oh one more note on "internet addiction" -- i'm sure such a concept is very welcome to social media companies who can then absolve themselves of responsibility for designing mechanisms to keep user engagement time as high as possible for advertising revenue, in much the same way that the gambling industry heavily pushes the concept of 'gambling addiction' to displace blame for the immense suffering it causes from the fundamentals of their business model and technologies onto a tragic but unavoidable individual pathology

I've said this before but every basic feminism 101 women's empowerment event I've ever been to has been all about telling women and girls that it's okay to speak up for ourselves, it's okay to take up space, it's okay to be strong and fast and loud and hungry and sexy and smart and good at things without feeling shame, but apparently, with the way some people talk, the second a trans woman does any of these things it's evidence of "male socialization" and needs to be called out and "corrected." like, even if this were the case, which it isn't, I think it's patently insane to believe "it looks like these women don't have as much crushing shame from a lifetime of experiencing misogyny as most other women" (<- a claim that, from my experience, is simply not true about trans women) and then follow it up with "I must Fix This by teaching them to shut up and be ashamed" instead of, like, idk "good for them, I wish this type of liberation for all other women as well."

I'd personally want to be careful with conspiratorial rhetoric like this when there are other, very plausible explanations for both Trump and TikTok's actions.
Almost all of the largest tech companies are sucking up to Trump, with many of them making huge donations to his inauguration fund. Not only is his administration going to be in charge of writing laws and enforcing regulations, but Trump also has a history of being pretty fickle and switching who he shows preference to based on whoever spoke to him last.
Trump being on their side is especially important for TikTok, which is still in a precarious position even after the ban has been delayed. It makes perfect sense for TikTok to use this as an opportunity to brown nose Trump in the hopes that it appeals to his ego and he does something to stop them from being permanently banned.
For Trump, suspending the ban allows him to start his administration by doing something that most people want, which is good for his popularity as a leader as well as his own ego.
Is it possible there's more going on behind the scenes? Of course. But I think there's a lot more political value in focusing on the many other actions Trump's administration has made so far and arguing against anyone seeing this as a win that Trump was the one who proposed the ban in the first place, and he still hasn't done anything that'll stop the ban from happening when the 75-day period is up.
Just in case any of you are confused, TikTok being banned and coming back not even 24 hours later with a giant "we thank President Trump" message is NOT a win. It's a huge red flag and a sign that this was a thousand percent planned.

the cognitive dissonance from people who want the products of modern medicine but get weird about animal research. like im sorry but this is necessary for the survival of the society we currently live in. and the scientists who work on these things are not evil cackling psychopaths. anyone you talk to in animal research has incredibly complex feelings about their work and incredibly complex relationships to the animals in their care. there are regulations and oversight and penalties in place to make the work as humane as possible and scientists are overwhelmingly the ones enforcing and advocating for better care.

I'm up to the "I dunno maybe children working 13 hour shifts is bad, guys" part of Capital and it feels important to inform people that haven't read it yet that capitalists in the 19th century were not by any means wringing their hands and twirling their mustaches about employing children to squeeze out profits, they were hiring "experts" to write newspaper articles for them, explaining how "well, the socialists have these big demands about an 8-hour work day, and taking Saturdays off, but it's actually just so complicated, it's too complicated for most people to understand, we just NEED to hire children for night shifts because the stamina of their strong, youthful bodies is the only way we can survive as a business! It's science, you see. Economics doesn't work like that, just ask our economics professors at Oxford. You CAN'T turn a profit only working people 8 hours! Trust the experts, they know. It's just so complicated..."
That exact infuriating cadence that you read in New York Times articles, in the Atlantic Monthly, in the WaPo and all the other bourgeois rags where "everything is so complicated, and it's actually a lot more complicated than you think.." that has been around since the beginning. It is nothing new. So the next time you see some op-ed from Matt Yglesias or any of those other guys huffing their own farts about how "complicated" everything is, and how "unrealistic" a 30-hour work week is, remember that Marx was dealing with that exact class of "intellectuals" "explaining" how working 13 hours at age 10 was "vital" to the "moral fibre" of those poor kids.
