When I think about how close Sawyer and Graham are in age, I think about how at the time of Graham’s birth, Julie was 26 and Emmett was 28. So they were dealing with a ten-month-old and a newborn at the same time. And all I can see is this:
E: “We’re waiting at least five years if we want another.” J: “Five? Ten!”
And as they teach Sawyer how to walk, talk, use the potty, etc., they try teaching Graham as well. He picks it up a bit slower than his brother, but learns before (a lot of) kids his age. And despite the chaos, all is going fairly well (most of that is thanks to the help of Emmett’s parents and twelve-year-old sister). Except for the ‘waiting five years’ part. Sawyer is almost three when Julie’s third pregnancy catches them both by surprise. And just:
J: “You know, they boys may as well have been twins.” E: “Twins! Lord, what if it’s twins next time?” J: “…”

Graham has died
No… No!
“No!” Julie shouted, “H-He’s not dead, he can’t be!”But she knew better. The doctors did tell her ‘any day now.’ But she didn’t want to believe it.
She felt light headed. She couldn’t breathe. It was as if the world had ended.
Her baby was gone. One of the most important people in her life was gone. And nothing could bring him back.
Julie fell to the ground, curled up into a ball and began sobbing. Her loud sobbing and screams eventually made her throat feel raw, and her tears felt endless. The pain was unbearable. She felt ruined and broken. It was as if nothing could fix her now.

Nan gasped as the other girl’s smiled faded. “No! Don’t be sad! Here!” She hesitated briefly, then reached out to turn up the corners of the girl’s mouth. “See? Turn your frown upside-down.” She took her hands away and pondered the term ‘ladies in waiting’. What were they waiting for? Maybe they were waiting to be princesses too. Did they have to wait for very long? It must be awfully boring to wait like that, she decided. She hoped they got comfortable chairs to wait in. Unlike the stiff, scratchy chairs at the doctor’s office. “Then what’s your name? Mine’s Anneliese. But sometimes people call me Nan, too. It’s smaller, so it’s easier. But I like aaany kinds’a names.”
“Brother’s are wonderful too. I have one of them. His name is Nico.” Bianca smiled more at the younger girl’s enthusiasm. “Well those princesses have ladies in waiting. That’s kind of what we are. We’re just warriors too.”
Her smile dimmed. “Well my mother used to tell my brother and I stories about our father.”

“It’s okay, Mama. You didn’t mean it.” She kisses the tips of her fingers, then gently touches her mother’s nose as if transferring the kiss. Curls bounce as she shakes her head. “I won’t tell. Promise.”
‘Shit’, Julie says to herself. Now she made her daughter feel guilty! What kind of parent does that to their child? Happy Mother’s Day to her. Someone give her an award for ‘Best Mom Ever’.
“Oh, no, I didn’t mean it like that!” She crouches down and cups Nan’s face in her hands, “ —You didn’t spoil anything, my love. You could never spoil anything. I’m sorry, darling. Mommy just needs to choose her words more carefully.”
Julie furrows her brow and smiles, “I wont tell them if you don’t.”

“I . . . spoiled it?” Her face screws up in an expression of genuine hurt. Oh no! She had spoiled it, hadn’t she? Before they could get to the kitchen, she stops. A tiny finger pressed against the girl’s lips as she whispered, “Shh. Don’t tell on me. Please, Mama? I didn’t mean it.”
“Awh, why did you spoil your brother’s plan?” Julie furrows her brow and half-smiles. She takes her daughter’s hand and walks to the kitchen.

“Mama, Mama!” The four-year-old tugs at the hem of her mother’s shirt. “C’mon! We made you breakfast for Mother’s Day! But Sawyer says it’s a surprise, so keep it secret, okay?”

“I've got loooots’a cousins. But none’a them’re goddesses, I don’t think. Don’t got sisters, though. Big brothers ‘stead.” She nods again, grinning. “Yeh. I like all kinds’a stories. Mama and Daddy reads us books. And Daddy tells us ‘bout his adventures. And Sawyer and Graham and me make up stories together. We like being in the stories most’a the time. It’s fun that way. What kinds’a stories does your parents tell you, Miss?”
“Oh really? That’s pretty cool. I’m sure you’ll learn magic though.” Bianca knelt down so she was closer to the girl. “Lady Artemis is my cousin technically. Since her father is my father’s brother. But she’s like an older sister too.”
“Actually we can pretty much do that too. But no…does your mom tell you stories about princesses or Queens?”

The little girl nods slightly, face light up in awe. “Yeh. Daddy told me ‘bout her. His mama’s a goddess too! She does magic. Daddy and Sawyer does magic too. I can’t yet. But that’s okay. Neither can Graham or Mama.” “—Serve . . . ?” She blinks at the word. “Like serve food? Is Lady Artemis your mama? She makes you food? You hunt for the food and she cooks it?”
Smiles down at her “No, but I do serve one. You’ve heard of Lady Artemis I’m sure. I’m one of her hunters.”

“Hm—” Nan considers this. It hasn’t been long since she last ate, but she could easily eat again. “—’kay! I’m starved.”

Everly giggles at Nan and turns left, obeying her little niece’s orders. Ah, the Italian restaurant. She’s only been to it a couple of times, but they have the best spaghetti. Her stomach rumbles at the thought. “Alright, how about we stop there and eat real fast? And once we’re done, we’ll go to Cycle City.”

“Oh.” Sawyer waited as Nathan gathered his books. “I guess that makes sense.”

“Probably once or twice we have. Your dad is friends with my mom.” Nathan grabbed the last book out of his locker. “They spent some time at the Greek camp together.”

Help? With something . . magic? Nan lit up once more. Maybe she could do at least this much. “Okay! I can help with that, no problem. What do I need to do?” She took a closer look at the spellbook, her face screwing up as she scanned over the runes. She recognized some, but not very many. “Why do you have to translate them? What’re you doing it for?”

“Aye.” It was hard not to, but Lou Ellen managed not to crack herself up because of Nan’s frown. It was cute. She was cute, too, and for one moment, Nan reminded her of Salem when he was ten.
Humming, the woman told her that yes, there was a distinct possibility that she might or might not (oh, who was she kidding, knowing Lou, she’d need help anyway) with what she was doing. Pointing to one of the spellbooks lying haphazardly on the table, Lou said, “Was actually tryin’a translate those runes, but I got stuck.” Again. “Y’wanna help me get this done?”

Into the woods! Er, kitchen. And there the dog sat, giving a little whine-bark as the two boys entered. He moved aside as Sawyer opened the pantry and took out three small bags. Another whine-bark from Valentine.
"We’ve got . . . peanut butter, bacon, and cheese. Peanut butter’s the only kind Lady will eat, but Valentine the glutton likes them all. What do you think?”
“Lindsey. I-I think Graham told her. But I’m…I’m not sure.” He shrugged. Whatever. Nan getting turned blue? That’s awesome, man! Awesome! “But yeah, I-I won’t say anything, I promise.” The boy ran a hand through his hair, much like he’d seen his mum do time and time again, not even caring that it looked a little bit strange.
Doggie! Mason laughed delightedly, both at Valentine and at the mental image of the dog growing thumbs and actually opening the pantry. Nodding at Sawyer, Mason’s little legs carried him into the kitchen as fast as he could.

“Oh! It’s on your way? That’d be perfect, thanks! I'm pretty sure Coach’ll murder me if he sees I’ve fallen behind.” Sawyer smiled gratefully for a moment, then a hint of confusion crossed his face as he forgot completely that he was wearing his school ID. “. . yeah. That’s me. Sorry, I’m not too great with faces if we’ve met?”

“It’s actually on the way to my next class, I can show you if you want.” Nathan smiled at the boy. “Sawyer right? I’m Nathan.”
