this is why George R.R. Martin can't finish A Song of Ice and Fire
What they don't tell you about writing is that as you write, you discover scenes and entire plots that you hadn't accounted for that need to be written. So you can spend two hours writing and editing only to realise you're further away from the finish line than you thought you were when you started

Stupid smile. Stupid charming personality. Stupid cringey dad jokes. Stupid Jason Hochberg.
It was weird. It was awkward. He said he wouldn’t be back this summer. Gave a long speech about the end of an era and cried his eyes out on the final day of camp last year.
He said he wouldn’t be back.
But he was; the first person you saw when you arrived at Camp Pineway this year just had to be… him.
This summer was supposed to be different, it was supposed to be for you while you got over Jason; healing or some shit. Everything from last summer was still heavily imprinted in your mind—the laughs, the giggles, the late nights spent together, the inside jokes you both shared, the hugs and soft and sweet kisses you and Jason shared when no one was looking. You know, everything that drew you to him in the first place.
This summer at Camp Pineway was supposed to be Jason free.
So when you hopped out of your car that Thursday morning of counselor’s weekend and saw him helping Demi with her bags, you cringed. An inner and outer cringe as you sighed, shaking your head. Maybe he wouldn’t notice you yet, maybe he wouldn’t say anything to you yet, maybe, just maybe, you could hide from him.
As you stared blankly at the bags in your trunk your peace and quiet was interrupted by a laugh, a laugh you knew all too well.
Jason.
“Hey, hey!” He smiled, walking towards you. He leaned against your car gently, arms crossed over his chest as he looked at you. “It’s nice to see you, I’m glad you decided to come back to Camp Pineway for another year.” He added, sounding genuine.
You nodded, mumbling back a short, “yeah,” without even looking up at him.
“Need a hand?”
You shrugged, grabbing your bags from the trunk. “I think I have it,” you replied, glancing up at him. Fuck, definitely shouldn’t have done that. One look was enough to make all the feelings come back like one swift kick in the gut.
Jason hummed, the smile on his face fading slightly as you denied him needing any help. “At least let me walk you to your cabin? Which one are you in this year?”
You sighed, knowing he would just follow you if you didn’t allow him permission to go with you. “Cabin 8,” you mumbled, closing your trunk before making the trek towards the cabin. Jason followed beside you, occasionally double and even triple checking that you didn’t need help with your bags. Yeah, classic Jason. Always wanting to help and always making sure things were where they needed to be.
When you finally made it to your cabin, you fumbled with the door before Jason stepped in to help you. “Here! This one is always tricky, you’ll get the hang of it before you know it!”
You nodded, “thanks.” You stopped and looked up at him, raising an eyebrow slightly. “I thought you weren’t coming back this year?” You asked, the question escaping a little harsher than you meant.
“Yeah, well,” he mumbled, rubbing the back of his neck. “I guess you could say that plans change… that and I had a little bit of unfinished business to attend to here.”
“Plans change,” you repeated. “Thanks, for the help, or whatever.”
“Yeah, anytime. It’s… it’s good to see you, you know?” He smiled softly, leaning against the side of the cabin.
“Yeah.” You nodded, placing your bags on your bed. “Right back at you.”
Jason’s smile brightened a little more before he turned and walked away, off to help the other counselors that may need him. You stood at the doorway of your cabin, watching him walk away. He walked through the grass, swinging his arms as he walked.
God, you still loved him…
Since this morning, you’ve been struggling to keep yourself and your emotions in check while Jason runs everything, blissfully unaware of the glares and awkward glances coming from you. Either that or he didn’t care about them.
You wanted to run up to him and wrap your arms around him again like last year. You wanted to leave a soft kiss on his lips before dragging him by the hand behind your cabin. You wanted to giggle while he laughs at being tugged into a hiding spot before his arms wrap around your waist, pulling you closer to his body. You wanted Jason back, your Jason back. But you weren’t sure if you could get him back.
You wandered off from the group, wanting to be alone with nature and the spot you missed so much over the off season. Taking in your surroundings, you smiled softly at the birds chirping lowly, the squirrels scampering across the forest, the sunlight coming through the leaves of the trees. You took in everything, forgetting about the other counselors and Jason for a bit.
That was until you misstepped and tripped over an exposed tree root. You screamed, the pain instant in your ankle as you fell to the ground with a big huff. Your scream echoed through the forest slightly, and Jason was the first one to run to your aid.
“Shit,” Jason mumbled, running towards you. “Are you okay?” He asked, kneeling down in front of you.
You looked up at him and winced, grabbing hold of your ankle. “I’m fine,” you sighed, shaking your head. “It’s nothing, just a little twisted ankle.” You added, looking down at your now red and swollen ankle.
“It doesn’t look like nothing,” he replied, taking a seat beside you. “Let me help you, please?” He asked, his voice sounding softer as he hesitantly reached for your leg. You sighed, stretching it out onto his lap. Jason looked at your ankle, moving it a couple different times and directions to ensure it wasn’t broken. You winced each time, sighing as your head fell to his shoulder gently. “What did you do?” He asked, reaching for the small first aid kit he always carries with him.
“I tripped over a fucking tree root,” you mumbled, closing your eyes as he began wrapping your ankle up carefully.
“Ah, those tree roots will get you,” he replied, a small smirk tugging at his lips.
“Shut up,” you mumbled, breathing out slowly as the pain flared up again. “That tree root didn’t hurt me like you did last summer, that wound from you will never seem to heal.”
Jason stopped, pulling away slightly to look down at you. “I’m sorry,” he mumbled. You shook your head and moved away from him, wincing at the pain in your ankle.
“I’m sorry literally doesn’t even come close to making up for what you did to me.”
“I know,” he sighed softly, looking up at you. “And I don’t expect you to," he sighed, "maybe just… listen?” You sat back against a tree and looked at him. You nodded, letting him continue. Jason took a deep breath and sighed, moving closer to you slightly. “I was an idiot last year, trust me, I still am an idiot. But, the time we spent together here last summer truly was just… the best time of my life. That’s the reason I came back, I just had to see you. I had to apologize to you, I had to tell you how I feel.” Jason looked at you. “And, I love you, I really do. I have spent these last few months thinking about you nonstop and I, I understand if we can’t get back to how we were before but I hope you can at least… forgive me.”
You looked at him, thinking to yourself before you sighed. “I love you too,” you mumbled. “I think we can try to get back to that but… I think we need to take it slow first.”
Jason nodded, agreeing with you and respecting your decisions. “Can I, uh, can I help you back to your cabin?” He asked, standing up. He placed his hand out for you and helped you up, wrapping his arm around your waist and your arm around his shoulder. “You should really sit and rest, you don’t want this to get worse.”
“I know,” you sighed, looking at him. “Thanks, Jason,” you smiled, leaning in to place a soft kiss on his cheek. “It’s good to know you’re still looking out for me.”
Jason’s face turned a soft shade of pink, a small chuckle escaping his lips. “I never stopped looking out for you, and I never will.” He said softly. “Now, uh, let’s get you into bed.”
“Maybe you could stay with me for a bit?”
“Yeah,” he nodded. “I’d like that.”
