We were lucky enough to be joined by Max Harper-Bennett in the legends lounge today for a performance of his new song Watermelon Sugar.
In a more stripped back version, we saw a different side to the up tempo number that we are sure will feature heavily this summer. Can you picture anything more satisfying than sipping on a cocktail in the sun singing along to this number?
We asked Max what this song meant to him.
“It’s a special song to me this one. Not necessarily because of the lyrical content, it’s quite a simplistic song but because writing this was a huge distraction for me from some other things that I had going on at the time. I really hope it can be that for other people, music has the power to take us to other places and like you said, maybe enjoying the sun and a cocktail with this song in the background is a little bit of joy we can bring back to the world.”

Olivia Marie is back with yet another liberating anthem, this time titled “Woman”
The lyrics are infectiously catchy throughout the track, and the beat is just something that really makes you want to dance. It’s well extremely well produced, you could tell Olivia enlisted only the best to liberate each sound on the record.. It feels like it possesses an emotive timelessness, a lot of time, energy, and thought went into this song and it bleeds through every performance whether it be vocally or instrumentally. Lyrically, this feminist anthem is quite obvious and in your face, but it does suit the style of the song. Olivia uses her voice masterfully, in ways she did not do on her albums before and it already gives her music more depth and diversity. It’s a swinging pop tune with prominent horns, throwing us back to the pop today's records are built on- we love a good horn.
The soulful arrangement of blaring horns and bluesy piano gives the song a distinction from other upbeat, boastful songs and is a welcome addition to today's market.

After a worldwide premiere at the 2020 Legends Awards that left some in tears, the single is finally here two weeks before the album is due for release.
Lover is the triumphant third single (but fourth release) from her forthcoming album of the same name, and it’s the first we heard of the album that is written by only Blue. Lover is something different than the bright singalong pop that has marked the two previous singles. It treads a more acoustic, folksy path.  It’s a laid-back love song that draws on her particular style of highly specific storytelling. Blue’s vocals sound warm and full of love as she sings about the lover she has spent three summers with, but wants to spend the rest of her life with. It is all very sugary and sweet, but it serves the mood so convincingly, one can’t help to softly sway along to the cute melody. The lyrics are peak Blue and once you reach the bridge you’re swooned away in her vows and words to her husband, Callan Duffy, but with a twist (see: “swear to be overdramatic and true”)
Now waltzing through life, Blue looks to share that with us all. Lover is the grand gesture that proves that all the heartache she’s sung about – from 2010’s Teardrops On My Guitar to 2018’s Out of the Woods – was worth it. “All’s well that ends well to end up with you.”

“Summer Feelings” is the feel-good, groovy single just dropped by two of the top young pop artists of this year, Naya Parsons and Ryland James.
The track gives off an authentic disco-feel and invokes a sense of nostalgia – while also urging everyone to get up and dance. Layered over an anthemic soundscape and catchy beat, the collaboration between the two musicians is a fruitful one, one that was unexpected yet made so much sense when it happened. The sunny, fun vibe of the track is a much-needed reprieve from the dark, moody summer of 2020 music other artists have been pushing out. Here is a grand return to form, reminding audiences that the feeling of summer isn’t to be lost in your feelings.
James and Parson’s combined vocal prowess helps to conjure up vivid images of warm, lazy summers spent kicking it back with friends; you can’t help but play it on loop as you let the “summer feelings” wash over you.

Review: Penny Lane’s “Exhale”
Penny is back yet again with another project, this time a small packed and single faceted EP titled “Exhale” and here’s our review.
The EP starts out thumping with the title track, setting a steady pace for what coms out as a pretty solid effort. The clear highlight among the tracks is “Gold” a song reminiscent of the love that pours out of Penny’s earlier recordings. What’s special about the EP is it adds a brand new layer to Lane’s already impressive catalogue, one of vulnerability and maturity. It feels like everything we’ve heard before with a new, more mature sounding spin on things, which is a welcomed attribute.
Listener’s can expect to gravitate more towards the tracks like “Gold” and “Honeymoon Fades” and maybe less to a song like the projects closer “Almost Love”  The sonic cohesiveness of this EP are a standout, every track transitions into the next flawlessly and in a way that makes perfect sense but lyrically and soundwise.
She’s been known to push out release after release, but they keep getting more special and keep leaving us asking for more. “Exhale” is no different.

tw: drugs, suicide
Youngblood has always had a bit of a reputation surrounding the rockstar lifestyle. Sex, drugs and rock and roll seems to be in their blood however this morning news broke that perhaps one member of the band may have gone a little bit too far. In the early hours of July 1st, news started circulating that drummer Benjamin Right had been rushed to the hospital while in New York during a tour break. The reason behind the emergency wasn’t initially reported however we’re now learning that it was, like most people suspected, a drug overdose.
A twitter account that has since been deactivated posted photos just a little over an hour ago showing Right in a New York home at what appears to be a house party. Drugs are quite obviously being used and you can see white residue on a table in front of him in one of the photos. Now the twist. The same twitter user who posted the photos claims that it was not an accident that Right took things too far. They are claiming he attempted to take his own life. We’ve reached out to Youngbloods camp but have yet to get a response. So what does this mean for the remaining tour dates? We’ll keep you updated.

THE BALLAD OF WINNIE KANE
Legends Magazine. June 2020. Samuel Washington
It’s rare for a pop star to burst onto the scene with such urgency, but this months Legend’s cover star, Winnie Kane has done exactly that. Less than a year into her career and she has a claim not much do, a number one single and a fanbase prepared to propel her into permanent stardom. It’s clear she’s only at the beginning of her career and is fast on the track to success. Here’s my sit-down with Winnie Kane.
---
SW: We’re so thrilled to have you as our cover star for June, how does it feel?
WK: Totally surreal honestly, I’ve read this magazine for so many years and could never have pictured a time when I’d be in the magazine, let alone on the cover! Thank you so much.
SW: The pop landscape can be a scary one for a new artist- yet you’ve seemed to thrive right off the bat. What kind of things helped you overcome such a sometimes scary world?
WK: Well I think it’s important that people recognise this didn’t just happen overnight, I had been recording on youtube for a few years and written with people here and there. Patience and resilience are probably the two big things that helped me navigate through all of this. I think having friends you can trust is important too, my friend Sabrina keeps me so grounded and always tells me when something I’ve done sucks!
SW: Do you have any advice for other artists putting out their first bodies of work?
WK: I think it’s easy sometimes to get caught up in too many opinions from other people. Music is so personal and so subjective that you can risk letting other peoples views cloud your judgement, leaving you with an album that doesn’t feel authentic. I had a really small network that understood what I wanted out of this project and that helped me define my style.
SW: Revival is a title that could mean a million things, why did you go with that for the name of your debut album?
WK: I knew pretty early on that it was the album name I wanted to go with and you’re right, it can mean a lot of different things and I guess that was kind of the appeal. Obviously when you listen to my record you can hear parts of my journey and the process I took to rebuild myself after some knocks, but I like that someone can listen to my record and relate it to something they’re going through in life. I wanted the message of this album to be one of revival no matter who you are, or what you’re going through. The good times will come again.
SW:  What has been the hardest part of the last year for you?
WK: That’s difficult. Gosh. I had a moment where my previous producer deleted all traces of 75% of my album and I had to start over when I was weeks away from my album deadline. That was a stressful time for sure.
SW: Have you had that moment where you’re like “I finally made it”? If so, when was it?
WK: No, I really feel like I’m dreaming and that I’ll wake up at any moment. I don’t know if I’ll ever have one of those moments!

Kylie Blue & Maxwell Harper Set To Host First Ever ‘Super Saturday Night Live’
Tumblr media
Earlier today it was announced by NBC that Maxwell Harper and Kylie Blue would feature as the hosts of the July 18th edition of Saturday Night Live.
Two of the biggest stars in music today will join forces and double as both hosts and musical guests for a special three-hour edition of the broadcast. Both no strangers to the SNL stage, performing on the infamous stage on different occasions as well as Blue having a hosting nod back in 2012. The duo have been very publicly friends for years famously linked through their respective partners Olivia Marie & Callan Duffy. They are going to bring this friendship under the SNL bright lights for what the network is guaranteeing will be a must-see edition of the show.
The show will take place a day after the release of Kylie’s seventh studio album “Lover” and with Max’s latest single “Lights Up” stuck on all the radio airwaves it’ll be intriguing to see not only what each of them perform but what kind of fun they’ll conjure up on the show.
