Smiling gratefully at the girl, Makayla moved further into the bed, sitting on the edge of the bed across from the other girl.  “Thanks.”  She said quietly, hoping whoever was in the hallway wouldn’t bother checking the rooms after curfew.  She looked over at the other girl, not seeing anyone she’d already met at Brielle.  “I’m Makayla.”  She introduced herself, hoping the other girl would follow suit.  “I’m sorry to barge in, I just heard someone and I needed somewhere to hide in case it was a guard and your room was the closest one.”

Pulling off her duvet cover and bed sheets with her left hand, Lei sat up on her bed to face the younger girl. “Don’t mention it,” She responded, using her free hand to quickly run her fingers through her hair, pushing the smaller strands away from her face. “I’m Leilani, but you can call me Lei.” She quickly shook her head, frowning ever-so slightly. “No, it’s okay. I don’t have a roommate, so I don’t mind the company.” Truth to be told, she would’ve liked to actually get some sleep, but the night was still fairly young.

“Oh my goodness, sorry!” Laurie exclaimed, freezing as she ran into someone in the hall. She’d been so set on finding Peter or Emma or a way out, that she hadn’t been watching at all where she was going. “I, um, didn’t hurt you did I?”
Tumblr media
Lei had gotten so lost in her thoughts that she hadn’t noticed she had run into the girl until she spoke to her. “No, you didn’t. I’m okay,” She reassured her, plump lips curving into a gentle smile. “It’s okay, really. I should be the one saying sorry. I wasn’t paying much attention to where I was going.”

She had been walking around unsure of what to do until she gave up choosing to sit down and grabbing a book. She hadn’t been able to find her friend and walking around unsure of where she was going was only making her more nervous. She looked up upon realizing there was someone else in the room. “What do you think of this book? Is it worth reading?” A warm but nervous smile on her face, hopeful that the other might want to weigh in.

After being told that journaling every day would be beneficial for her recovery, Lei decided to finally give it a try after finishing her homework for the day. Writing her first journal entry proved to be rather difficult at first, since she was still getting used to writing again after being a high school dropout for years, but after a while, she started to see why people found solace in their diaries. However, just as she was hit with inspiration, an unknown girl spoke to her, causing her to look up. “You’ve never read Little Women?” She asked curiously, looking at the girl with interest. “Definitely give it a try. If you’re into period pieces, you might enjoy it.”

Mostly if patients moved wards, it was medical to physical. That was what Lola had seen so far, anyway. What was Lei’s deal, then? She didn’t look sick - in fact, she was really cute.
“Leilani is the prettiest name, I love it. I’m Lola,” She said, enjoying the musical way all of those Ls rolled off her tongue. Lei, Leilani, Lola. She blinked in her hazy, happy way as she began to lead the new patient in what she hoped was the right direction. “You’ll get used to it soon enough. Mostly your appointments should be with the same doctor so as long as long as you figure out how to get from your room to the doctor’s office, you’ll be golden. Some of the staff are pretty uptight but I think they have your best interests at heart.”
Tumblr media
“Thanks. It’s nice to meet you, Lola,” Lei said, cheeks softly flushing at Lola’s flattering remarks. In all honesty, the main reason she went by her nickname, as opposed to her full name, was due to the fact that there were two other girls with the same as her when she was in pre-K and it’s stuck ever since then. Truth to be told, however, she had grown to dislike it when her peers mockingly called her Lay’s, but she was just too used to it to change it.
“I hope so. I’m just not used to being in a place this big, you know? I come from a really small town in Illinois and it’s all I’ve ever known, really.” She nodded, following her lead as they searched for Lei’s destination. “Okay, that makes sense. Let’s hope it doesn’t take me too long to adapt, then.” A soft chuckle escaped her plump lips, running slender fingers through her soft black locks before stopping in her steps at the sight of her room number. “—...Wait! It’s here.”

Scared, doe-eyed and brand new - exactly how Heather liked her women. Her attempts to recruit more “friends” hadn’t exactly gone as planned; each new patient she had met up to that point had been too strong-willed. Heather also couldn’t break down her own stone cold wall for two seconds most days. But with this girl, she thought things could be different and she planned to persevere.
Heather smiled brightly as she stopped next to her. Her hands rested in hoodie pockets, giving her a relaxed demeanor to any onlooker. “Sure thing, sweetheart. I’m rooming there, too, so I’d be more than happy to show you the way.”
Tumblr media
In the blink of an eye, Lei’s expression went from panicky to downright relieved as the fair-headed girl spoke. Whoever she was, the former teenage harlot thought she might as well be an angel fallen from the heavens, because just a few seconds ago, it seemed like she was gonna spend the following hours looking for a room in a place she was barely familiar with.
“Oh, thank God. I just got moved to medical, but nobody told me where I could find it. I’m off to a great start, ain’t I?” She explained, gladly returning a wide smile at the stranger, all while chuckling nervously. “At least, they told me my room number, so not all hope is lost yet. Where’s yours, by the way? Mine’s 301.

Who was she kidding? Lei would’ve been an idiot to believe that she could just leave her old life behind, and recover from two years of tentatively seducing filthy older men for cash, lying about her true age non-stop and being constantly harassed outside of working hours overnight, especially in moments like these, in which her body cruelly reminded her of the one moment in her life she just wanted to leave behind.
You see, whenever she was hit with a particularly nasty flashback before coming to Brielle, she would simply repress it, even if it meant drowning her sorrows away or getting high off her ass. However, now that she was surrounded by the institute’s harsh rules, that wasn’t an option anymore, but if she had to endure the sharp pain in the back of her skull or the agonizing pulling sensation in her snatch any longer, she was gonna lost it right there and then.
Not being able to lay down any longer, Lei jolted out of her bed, her right hand trembling uncontrollably as she pulled out her duvet cover, her vision starting to blur as she almost lost her footing. Gasping for air, Lei held onto her throbbing chest and dashed out of her room, unable to care about the wandering halls room as she ran across the adult ward until she actually tripped and fell on her face this time.
“—…I-it hurts. It hurts so bad,” She barely managed to make out, looking up to the unknown boy facing her. “It’s t-too much. I can’t b-breathe. I c-can’t stop it.”

She had been so good since she got here, to the point that she genuinely questioned if she had been misdiagnosed, to a degree. Her anxiety blinded her, and Payson felt what was to come run through her veins. She tried as fast as she could to get back to her room, and shut the door immediately behind her. The blonde shut here eyes, and rapid, shallow breaths proceeded. It wasn’t until a voice spoke that she looked up. Shit. She was in the wrong room. “I-I’m so sorry, I d-didn’t…..” she couldn’t even apologize properly she was so panicked. Payson had never seen the girl before here, and could only assume she was a patient; it might’ve been the wrong room, but Payson knew she had at least gone to the patient rooms. This was not her, she was better than this.

If she had to be honest with herself, it hadn’t hit Lei that her days as a teenage, drug-abusing prostitute days were over until today. It seemed like it had been forever since she last had a set curfew, let alone done any homework. How long had it been since she had gone to school? Three years? Either way, once she was done with school for the day, she immediately started completing her homework. However, by the time she was checking for spelling mistakes, the door suddenly swung open and was shut closed, causing Lei to jump in her seat before turning around to see a svelte, blue-eyed girl becoming panic-stricken. “No, no. It’s okay. No hard feelings,” Lei gently reassured her, standing up to walk closer to the girl. “Hey, look at me. It’s gonna be okay. Just focus on my voice, okay? Try breathing in and out.” The tone of her voice was soft enough to be encouraging, instead of condescending, even as she made a demonstration, albeit exaggeratedly louder. “I’ll do it with you.”

SUB: Makayla O’Connor | @makayla-oconnor ↬ Continued from here
Makayla had been wandering around the hallways after dark, and she’d heard someone walking around, so she’d ducked into the nearest room, hoping it was empty. Seeing another girl there she whispered in response. Yeah, I think so, I just, can I hide in here for a few minutes?
Tumblr media
After a strenuous, official first full day at Brielle, Lei decided it would be best to go to bed early, in the hopes of recovering the hours of sleep she lost throughout the last four days, especially to start the next day with the right foot. Unfortunately, just as she started to fall asleep, a slender, red-headed girl came dashing into her room. "Sure, go ahead. Make yourself at home."

ASK PROMPT | “IS EVERYTHING OKAY?!”

@lolaredirect
“—…Yeah, I’m good! Just an upset stomach!” Lei yelled through the bathroom door, wincing as she hid behind it. Truth to be told, she wasn’t, but Doctor Seuss told her that her Kaletra dose might cause her stomachaches and nausea at first, but she never thought it would be this bad.
As she attempted to let out a sigh, a burning sensation escalated up her throat, causing her to immediately fall down to her knees and spew out into the toilet, desperately holding onto its seat like her life depended on it, and in that moment, it probably did. “Scratch what I said…”

Lola barely paid enough attention to know which patients were Toni’s responsiblity, and therefore a little more relevant to her. She certainly didn’t pay enough attention to know much about the other patients, apart from the ones she’d hung out with on her extravagantly long breaks. The medical ward? An absolute mystery. She’d been sent there once when she was puking, but the puking was due to the drunkenness, so if she was being honest, her memory of the whole thing was a little fuzzy.
Still, she should probably at least try to be helpful. This poor girl looks so lost, and Lola could at least keep her company. She was supposed to be getting a coffee from the staff room for Toni, but Toni was used to these little errands taking five times as long as necessary. “I think it’s like… over there somewhere?” Lola said, gesturing vaguely. “I’m psych so I don’t go there much. But I’ll totally keep you company, we’ll find it together.”
Tumblr media
The former sex worker furrowed her dark brows, becoming even more perplexed at the redhead’s rather unclear directions. Running her fingers through her soft black locks, her lips managed to curve to a small smile. “I was at the psych ward when I first got here, but I’m getting moved to the medical one,” Lei explained, pointing to where she had come from with her left hand.
“Thanks. I’ll get all the help I can get. Nobody told me this place would be so big.” Her eyes widened ever so slightly as she made exaggerated motions with her hands before returning to hold onto her relatively small backpack. “You’d think that a place like this would have maps to hand out or somethin', but they don’t, apparently.” She nonchalantly shrugged her shoulders. “I’m Leilani, but people like call me Lei.”

To say that Lei was exhausted would be a vast understatement. In between being held in custody for a day and a half, going to court for a prostitution charge, taking a seven-hour flight from Chicago to Oregon and being tested HIV/AIDS-positive, she hadn’t gotten much sleep, if any at all, before she was notified that she was moved from the psychiatric ward, where she was originally placed at, to the medical ward.
So, there she was, doe eyes nervously flickering around in the hopes to make sense of her surroundings and where the adult ward could be found, but alas, she ended up confusing herself even more. She knew Brielle was supposed to be a hospital of sorts, but she had no idea the place would be so big! “—...Hi! Can you help me, please? I think I’m lost,” She said to a stranger passing through. “Where's the adult ward? My room is supposed to be there.”
