my function levels have been so so low for the last two-ish weeks and p soon I'm about to travel for two-ish weeks and like. jfc. when am I ever going to get shit done.
#like. realistically. end of July I guess?#blahhh#I'm not in a Situation or anything I'm just frustrated#mostly at my body#I would really like to be able to#like#run an errand AND answer a bunch of texts. in the same day. maybe also do a chore and/or a zoom call. or some commissioned from-home work.#the past two weeks I've topped out at basic physical self-maintenance (plus like one of the above five things) alarmingly often????#I was doing so well in early June#I guess I probs over-exerted myself#blah#whatever. again I'm not in a Situation. I'm doing enough work to pay my bills etc. there are just so many things that I WANT to do#or. more often. that I want to have the energy to want to do.#painblogging

This isn’t fully 100% related, but just on the subject of how most of the Les Mis fanbase (both broadly/irl/outside of tumblr and fandom, AS WELL as the actual fandom) is super apolitical. But I was recently having a conversation with my friends about “how can supposedly liberal and gay people be so into Call of Duty as a fandom just because they decided the two guys are gay??” And while the two are actually opposite subjects, I explained it in comparison to the LM fanbase and how they write fanfiction.
In both fandom tellings, the writers/fans blatantly ignore the actual activities and meanings of what their characters jobs/roles entail, mostly for the sake of focusing on completely unrelated plot/shipping, but part of it, conscious or not, is definitely willful ignorance about the actual meaningfulness of what they are ignoring.
In CoD, the fanfics will always randomly mention “going on missions” and “field work” and “debriefing” etc where they kinda mention the buzzwords of what military guys might do, but with zero implications of what that actually means or entails. Their role is Military Guys and what they do is Military Activity. My friends were still a little confused how one would not be understanding, or at least be able to ignore seemingly obvious words like that, until I described how LM fanfic is written. Obviously the main blorbos of the fandom are the barricade boys (for reasons I could complain in an essay about but isn’t relevant), and here their role is Activist (second to Student oftentimes), and they do Activism Activities. If expanded at all, it’s usually just an offhand mention of “making posters” or “doing a rally” (love when they say this and not even protest) and sometimes they even say that it is “for The Cause.” Like fr they won’t even name any issue it’s just The Cause. If they do specify what subject they are “activists for,” it’s usually like gay rights or something. Not that that isn’t important, but it’s another way of showing they don’t know about anything else, and that’s a very tame non controversial/universally accepted good cause (within this fandom space obv!).
Anyways, while ignoring the canon context of military war crimes and bombing civilians is much much much worse than ignoring what it actually means to be an activist and actively fight for change, both still show a level of disconnect from the meaningfulness of the original subject matter. And to some extent (especially with LM), it’s fine to do that and just have fun writing fanfic, and you don’t need to go into detail about everything especially when it’s not relevant to your romance plot. But overall, it alludes to a greater misunderstanding of the original media, or even disregard of the meaning/theme because it is less important than their gay blorbos.
All that is to say, I have never ever considered the broader LM fanbase to be political at all, or if they are, in the safest, tamest way possible, where they never have to do any work, think about anything too deeply, or examine their beliefs about more complicated subjects. Hopefully that all makes sense why I thought this was relevant lol
basically I agree to all of this, although I don't even engage in fanfiction as a whole
But there's like. Another layer to what I mean. You can engage in fandom however you like. Fanfic is usually written as a form of play with the characters you like, doing fun things. Sometimes its for getting your rocks off, sometimes it's just fun. There are different purposes to different media. I don't fault people for writing apolitical fanfic.
BUT NOBODY IS HANDWRITING APOLITICAL LES MIS FANFIC AND PRESENTING IN ON A LOVELY SCENTED PARCEL AND SENDING IT DIRECTLY TO THE OVAL OFFICE FOR DONALD TRUMP TO READ AND ENJOY. NO ONE SHOULD BE PUTTING ON CUTE PLAYS ABOUT BEING COOL REBELS AGAINST A TYRANNICAL GOVERNMENT AND SHOWING IT TO A TYRANT WHO'S CLAPPING AND SMILING AND FEELING GOOD ABOUT IT.
#so many LM fans like 'oh it could've harmed the actors' careers in the arts'#I do in fact think. y'all. that harm to one's career in the arts. is at the tame end of risks#that having decent-person principles asks us to take in situations like that.#I am usually pretty gentle with people's risk tolerances. and also. there are so fuckin many things they could've done instead#and so many people involved/required to make the show work Correctly#that I feel CERTAIN a pretty wide range of risk tolerances could've been accommodated in a successful. even fantastic. action.#it is bullshit that the show went on#(this is such a tangent to the actual post I'm reblogging. I'm just mad y'know)#lm tag

Remember "Reduce, Reuse, Recycle" ? I feel like there's been a distancing from the "reduce" and "reuse" part and a favoritism towards "recycle" by corporate American.
Capitalism can still thrive with recycling in the mix. You buy Plastic Thing 1, throw it away after one use, and they take that and recycle it into Plastic Thing 2 and sell it back to you. All while continuing to harm the environment.
Reusing puts a damper on things. They can't sell you Plastic Thing 2 when you're still using Plastic Thing 1. Plastic forks, for example- there is literally no reason why you can't reuse plastic forks more than once (aside from maybe microplastics, but it's too late for that)
Reducing is the one everyone wants to ignore. Just don't buy Plastic Thing 1. You don't need Plastic Thing 1. Pick up a set of metal forks and use those for years. Convenience is killing the planet

if you just register for a dysautonomia international medical conference. and you just let the videos play. and you even just half pay attention. you will gain the ability to change and save other people's lives.
so many chronically ill people only get diagnosed when someone other than their doctors say, "hey, have you heard of postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome? it is really common, treatable, but it only shows up on specific tests."
or "hey, I know you have been diagnosed with fibromyalgia, have you had autonomic testing or testing for non length dependent small fiber neuropathy? 30-40% of people with fibromyalgia have small fiber neuropathy, and a lot of that is the non length dependent pattern, which not a lot of doctors know about."
or "hey, you know how you have weird allergy issues? have you ever heard of mast cell activation syndrome? around 17% of people have mast cell issues, and they can cause debilitating symptoms all over the body until treated."
there are so many debilitating chronic illnesses that are EXTREMELY treatable, but only show up on specific tests. a lot of people with these conditions test as 'healthy' otherwise. and so fucking many of these kinds of conditions are presented at dysautonomia international in presentations that are easy to understand.
these medical conditions are everywhere, and have been around forever. and covid-19 has multiplied how many people have these, around the world.
everyone has an autonomic nervous system, and it breaks very easily. dysautonomia can happen alongside countless other medical conditions. every chronically ill person needs to be asking themselves if they might have some form of autonomic dysfunction. because chances are pretty good that they do.
#blah#I should probably do some further poking around to narrow down What Exactly All This Is#buuuuuut on the other hand. will that actually get me any better treatment. y'know.#painblogging
