I like words, I like words a lot. I’m not good at writing or speaking or anything to do with words, but I like them. The way you can find a word that means anything you want to say. One of my favorite words is thalassophile. A thalassophile is a lover of the sea.

I’m a thalassophile. I love the sea, I have a tendency to anthropomorphize the ocean. The way it churns about in such a labyrinthine way, with such a myriad of colors, it’s my favorite thing.

I talk to the ocean, and I know the ocean listens. She’s my friend.

Once when I was talking to her, the sun had just set and the bright oranges that had once cascaded her skin like gossamer were gone. I lied in the sand, staring up at the stars and just talked. I spoke about my day, the people I met on the streets. I talked to her about the weather and how the cool air felt nice as I rode my bike along the seawall.

She never spoke back, understandably so, how could she?

This specific time though, I had begun drifting off to sleep when I heard a voice. The voice was soft and efflorescent, yet harsh and crashing. It reminded me of the waves during a storm.

She told me not to open my eyes, just to listen to her voice. She told me how my stories always cheered her up, no matter what had happened that day.

We spoke until the moon was in the center of the sky, she said she had to go, and that she would see me tomorrow night. She said that she loved me. I heard the disruption of the usually steady sound of water, and I finally opened my eyes. I saw a woman walking into the water, the moon shining on drops of the sea on her skin. Sea foam clothed her, falling around her body as gracefully as a feather falls from a pillow. I watched her until she disappeared into the ocean, smiling to myself.

I love the ocean, and she loves me too.
