BIG COMPASS RAMBLE

okay little foreword im gonna try to format this a little more than I did my last one okay BIG FUCKING CANTO 5 SPOILERS UNDER THE CUT IF YOU DONT WANT SPOILERS LEAAAAAAAVE GOOOOOOO BYE BYE NOW OKAY

canto 5 is mainly focuses parallels between ishmael and ahab's characters and this is HEAVILY reflected in compass. this song is written in ishmael's perspective, but it can also be interpreted in ahab's.

"your mermaid's setting sail at last, full speed towards your heart"

in the PM universe mermaids are those who have been eaten and spat back out by a whale, becoming a mindless entity controlled by the whale. for ishmael, this whale is ahab. she has lost control of her desires, wanting nothing more than to find ahab and to bring an end to her life. for ahab, however, it is the pallid whale. she has devoted her entire life to killing this whale, even after it swallows her and her crew.

"when it snapped, my compass was swallowed by the sea"

while having to collect oil from a dead whale, the rope tethering ishmael to the pequod snapped, plunging her into the whale carcass. this made her feel weak and helpless, losing her direction and will to do anything other than partake in ahab's blind fervor for the pallid whale. however, for ahab, this refers to her fateful encounter with the whale. the pequod splinters and breaks, and she is eaten by the whale, forced to bide her time when she is the closest she has ever been to fulfilling her goal.

"i curse this relationship between you and me"

ishmael hates ahab. she hates the things she is forced to do for ahab. she hates the rest of the crew's violent loyalty to ahab. she wishes she never joined the pequod's crew. she hates that she agrees with ahab, she wants that white whale dead. ahab hates the whale. after being eaten, she hates that she let herself fall to the whale. she wants nothing more than to bring an end to its life.

"i wanted blood, i wanted black and white. clear-cut, your evils predefined"

ishmael, after the encounter with the pallid whale, still wants ahab dead. she wants to find ahab and kill her with her own hands, even if it means entering the whale with her. ahab just REALLY wants to kill that whale. she doesn't even remember what it did to her anymore, its evil is predefined. she just wants it dead.

"my compass is curiosity, im piercing through the rope that strangled you and me."

this is where the parallels mostly end, but it can still be seen from two perspectives. ishmael is killing the pallid whale, freeing herself, ahab, and the deceased crew of the pequod from the clutches of ahab's blind ardor. however, it can also be seen as her freeing herself and the crew from ahab herself. she is leaving a heavily injured ahab to drift to the bottom of the sea in a dead whale, so she presumes ahab to be dead even if ahab didnt die by her hand directly. she is freeing herself from the cycle of hatred created by ahab's blind obsession, and the recklessness that came with it, as well as avenging the crew that died by ahab's lack of regard for them.
