Marina Piccola beach (Capri, Italy). 5x7 in. Gouache on paper. I got to this beach in the morning when there were only a couple of people there. When I finished this study, the beach was full. I still haven’t posted many of the paintings that I created in Capri last summer.
This is a quick oil pastel sketch with which I tried to explain to a student how I approach painting backlit figures with light skin tones. For sunlit areas of the skin, I usually use a combination of warm and cool pinks, along with pale yellows. For shadow areas, I use medium-value warm and cool grays (browns), complemented by muted yellows and reds for the reflected lights.
To paint a darker skin tone, I would use a similar combination of colors, but all the colors would be slightly darker.
For the hair in this sketch, I opted for darker warm and cool browns, and a dark purple color to reflect the influence of the sky.
This combination of warm and cool colors always helps me achieve a more realistic look in my paintings. This approach is consistent across every medium I use.
