Valjean had taken off his well-tailored coat and sat on the sofa in a white shirt and a brown waistcoat, facing the two silver candlesticks on the mantelpiece—a handsome picture of a bourgeois man, who, if everything was as it seemed, would not look twice in Javert’s direction. And Javert himself would not dare to accept any familiarities, for he knew his place in society and would not sully an honest citizen with his carnal desires.

He exhaled. If he got up now and left, would Valjean notice? Would he stop him? Or would he let him go without a word, and they would not see each other for days again?

His chest ached. His flat had never felt so empty as in the last few days. His bed had never felt so cold. How easy was it to get used to another’s presence!

omg i now understand why some people were confused/surprised, even after reading the brick, to learn that fantine et al. rode a roller coaster on their day out....hapgood strikes again 😭

of course, if you don't speak french, why on earth would you associate the phrase 'russian mountains' with a roller coaster? what is this translation choice? i'm thinking she honestly didn't know what it was and just translated it literally.

The most unimportant thing that I love about the BBC adaptation is that Valjean is sometimes wearing blue.

also, I still find it a bit funny that my most popular fic is my Kirk/La'an fic that now has almost 540 kudos (it was its 2yo anniversary four days ago), but the second one? is still not one of my spones fics, but it's a Kuroko no Basuke fanfic from 2014 lol that now sits at 300. (The English must be terrible tbh; I am not willing to reread that one, but I'm also not deleting it since people still read it from time to time.)

One day soon-ish(?), my least favourite spones fic that is also, incidentally, my most popular spones fics, will also reach 300.

I think if any mckirk fic will ever reach 200 it will be like idk 2027 LOL

I'm writing my WIP based on the BBC adaptation, so I have to approach Valjean from "I need to get out of Cosette's life" POV. And it's something that fits him and his story, but you know, the book version

the version where Valjean desperately tries to hold onto Cosette even though he's pushing her away

even though it makes her distance herself from him and even treat him colder

where he visits her every single day and slowly increases the time he spends with her

and only after months of being able to see her every single day, he starts to be denied

and only after he is permanently denied, he loses his hope and will to live (even though he's been just surviving)

that is even more painful. But it's so rarely a part of Valjean's characterisation in fanfics 😭 He doesn't want to leave Cosette. He doesn't want to get out of her life. He makes it a daily habit to stay in it.

Valjean wants things. And he wants Cosette in his life. She's his happiness, his life, his soul. And he might deny himself some things, but he takes some things as well.

"I can't be part of the family, but I can still see her."
