House Rulerships - 1st House

Each house in the natal chart is ruled by a sign. That sign is in turn, ruled by a planet and by looking at where the planet is in the chart or the aspects it makes, we can gain more insight into a particular house. This is really helpful for those of us with empty houses - or just for people who want to learn more!

Example: My 1st House Cusp (Ascendant) is in Pisces, meaning it is ruled by Neptune (Chart Ruler). My Neptune is in Aquarius in the 11th House and makes various aspects to my other natal planets. My 1st House ruler being in the 11th House, means that my 1st House serves my 11th.

1st House Ruler in Aries/1st House: There is an element of action and leadership, the native may come across as fierce or aggressive at times, very straightforward.

1st House Ruler in Taurus/2nd House: Self worth relies heavily on how the native thinks the world perceives them, tendency to be very self-conscious and a people pleaser.

1st House Ruler in Gemini/3rd House: The native’s thoughts and opinions and their ability to express them is very important to the native’s image, they won’t feel genuine unless they are speaking their mind. 

1st House Ruler in Cancer/4th House: Family may have a lot of influence on how the native presents themselves, they may appear to be very warm and inviting. 

1st House Ruler in Leo/5th House: Self expression is very important to this person’s image, they will very likely use their body and their appearance as a canvas for their emotions and their aesthetic.

Why Sun-Sign “Compatibility” Isn’t Enough: In Defense of Leo

There are three things I always check when I’m considering a new addition to my astrological library:

Do they tell me anything I don’t already know?

What do they say about Aquarius?

Is their only criterion for compatibility sun sign?

Any source that focuses too much on how sun signs play together without taking other aspects into account is immediately suspect. But most specifically, I flatly refuse to listen to any source that lists Leo as one of Aquarius’s least compatible signs.

I have never understood why so many sources seems to believe that the signs across from one another must necessarily be enemies. The assumption that “opposite = bad” is a terrible one. If two signs are on opposite sides of the zodiac, it means simply that the signs stand for ‘opposite’ things. For instance, Pisces is the sign of the metaphysical, while Virgo is firmly rooted in this plane of existence. Aquarius focuses on humanity as a whole, whereas Leo focuses on the self.

Hopefully, you’ll notice that these concepts are not mutually exclusive. I may be an Aquarius, but I’m still pretty selfish. My best friend may be a Leo, but damn it, he’s one of the most selfless people I’ve ever met. It’s frankly idiotic to say that just because our signs revolve around different things, it means we can’t get along by default or otherwise aren’t compatible.

What being on opposite sides of the zodiac does is give the two of you tension. That tension brings with it a tremendous amount of energy, and if tapped into and used for creativity rather than destruction, it leads to an incredible number and variety of opportunities. So yes, that tension can lead to enmity if it isn’t kept in check. But it can also lead to a perfectly balanced and complementary friendship, as long as you develop it properly. That’s the part no one seems to acknowledge.

Obviously, I can’t speak for other opposite-sign pairs, nor can I even speak for all Aquarians. Both Aquarius and Leo have pretty bad reputations in some parts, and I have no doubt that sometimes they’re deserved. Yes, I’ve known and/or heard about quite a few underdeveloped Leos in my day. And I’ve also met some awful Aquarians. But for every unhealthy example of any sign, there are also the healthy ones, and those are the ones I’ll mostly be talking about.

Regarding opposite signs, most sources nitpick the disadvantages and ignore the potential benefits. But this essay concerns my Aquarian experiences with various Leos, as well as an analysis of the Leo personality as a whole.
