Katsushika Hokusai, The great wave off Kanagawa (Kanagawa oki namiura), (1830–34)

One of the most influential pieces of art from Japan, it actually influenced modern European art most notably Van Gogh’s Starry Night.  What’s interesting in the article, the blue pigment used in this painting was invented in Germany and was an accident.  An alchemist trying to create a chemical to transfer souls into dead bodies… ala Frankenstein… invented a compound so toxic it actually was used as a chemical weapon in WW2.  But sharing a space with another pigment maker who blended the chemical with a red paint, created Egyptian Blue… a lost Egyptian pigment considered the first synthetic color that would be used in this painting, and then return to Europe via the Expressionist movement.  

It’s a wild ride.
