el knowing about will and saving him being her mission, her purpose for a while. her visit to him in the UD and her visit to him while he's unconscious in bed. el feeling protective and caring about this boy who is just a concept, just a face in a photo and a voice in the radiowaves and the love and tears on people's faces.

and will being visited by this figure when he's almost dead already in the UD, who brings comfort and mentions his mom, but he doesn't know who this is. he's shivering and shaking and terrified. and then hearing about el for a year after he comes back. hearing but never seeing. he's back finally but everyone is mourning someone he never met bc he was too busy fighting for his life. that feeling of 'shouldn't you have been trying to find me and save me? how did you find time to care so much about someone new while i was gone?' and of course they were looking for him and of course el was essential and the only way he could've been saved, but right when he's back, there's already a missing hole in will that he's feeling from the trauma but everyone else has their own missing hole from el being gone.

and will finally sees her at the ball, when he didn't want to dance with this girl, he wanted to hang out with mike. but now he's dancing with this girl, and mike is dancing with her.

and for months it's a little bit of jealousy from will, which all comes out in his rain fight, calling her just a stupid girl when he wanted a day free of girls, but she's still there in the back of mike's head, just like it seemed when will came back from the UD, and meanwhile it's hard to say what, if anything, el is thinking or feeling about will.

but then suddenly they're siblings. brother and sister. and el is mourning her dad. and will is feeling freer to be himself but at the same time missing mike and his friends so much. but suddenly they have each other. they have to have each other because they're siblings. and el needs more help than she's ever needed before and will steps up. he saves her in little ways every day, just by giving her a smile or a nod or walking with her in the hallways. and he now beats himself up that he can't bring himself to help her more, this girl he'd called stupid last summer. he doesn't know how to stand up to bullies but he does everything he can to help his sister in ways that he can.

and el is struggling so much that it's hard to see how much will is helping until he's gone. but she's been relying on someone seeing her truth while she lies to mike for months. will knows she's struggling but he's still there for her everyday. and when they come find her at nina, she gets to hug her brother and he asks if she's okay and he is concerned about that fucking thing around her neck, and she smiles at him as big as can be.

it's just...... slowburn siblings. the feeling of being replaced, the protectiveness over one another, saving each other's lives, the jealousy, liking the same boy, keeping secrets, loving each other even when it's hard. it's being siblings. they just didn't know it for a long time and neither did we.

I would feel bad for them but they’re the dumbasses who decided fake dating was the solution to a problem that didn’t even ask for it.

“Will needs Mike in the way Mike wants to be needed.” No. No, that’s not it.

Mike thinks in order to be needed he has to have something to offer. When he and El first met he provided a house, clothes and food for her. He gave her the safety she needed. And then Hopper took care of that. And the only thing Mike then had to offer was romance. But now that he realizes that he cannot actually give that to her, he’s left with not knowing what else to offer. He can’t offer her anything anymore and thus he fears she will no longer need him.

What Mike wants is I will offer you this and in return you’ll need me because he thinks it’s the only possibility for him. Mike basically thinks that he alone isn’t enough. That he’s worthless if he doesn’t have a purpose, something to offer, to give. And being needed for just being himself isn’t an option. He cancels that out immediately because he thinks it’s wishful thinking. Beyond what he deserves.

It’s not that Will needs him in the way he wants to be needed. It’s that Will changes Mike’s perspective on the whole issue. You being you, doing what you enjoy is enough. I don’t need you because you have something to offer to me. I need you because you are you and you are here. You don’t need to have a strict purpose to be worthy of being needed and loved. You just need to be yourself. I love you and I need you for exactly who you are.

And Mike starts to think that being loved/needed for being himself is something he deserves after all.

Long rambley byler headcanon ahead but I put a cut <3

Okay yes the Mike and Hopper hostility is very funny, and it's very funny to imagine Hopper thinking he got rid of Mike when he and El break up only to realize Mike is now dating his son.

However,

Imagine Mike suddenly becoming far more respectful to Hopper now that he's dating Will and Hopper being completely baffled by this.

Mike's finally in a relationship that he actually cares about maintaining. He knows he and Will are going to be together for the rest of their lives. Therefore he and Hopper are going to be in each other's lives forever. So they may as well get along, right?

And he knows that Will loves Hopper, and Will finally getting to have a loving and supportive father figure makes him so happy. How could he be a jerk to the man that is giving Will something he's always needed?

(Yes all of this applied to El too, but Mike was never very sensitive to El's feelings. And we know he is very sensitive to Will's.)

So Mike stops insulting Hopper. (For the most part.) He keeps the door open three inches. (When Hopper is home.) And he makes and effort to foster a positive relationship with Hopper.

Sure, he slips up sometimes. Maybe even frequently. Mike is a bitch (affectionate) so some bitchiness is inevitable. But Hopper can see that he's trying.

Also, we all know that Mike and Hopper’s canon relationship isn't just a rivalry. Hopper cares about Mike, a lot. And Hopper is probably more of a father figure to Mike than Ted ever was. So there's a basis of affection and mutual respect there.

So give me Mike calling Hopper 'Sir' and Hopper looking at him like he has three heads. Give me Mike clinging to Will constantly, but separating himself and keeping a respectful distance when Hopper enters the room, until Hopper rolls his eyes and says, 'It's okay, kid.' at which point Mike grins and resumes clinging to Will. Give me Mike awkwardly trying to make small talk with Hopper. Give me Mike getting Hopper a Christmas present. Give me Mike making sure he gets Will home by curfew unless Hopper is covering the night shift and won't be home anyway.

But yes, give me a dash of Hopper and Mike hostility too. Give me Mike holding Will's hand at the dinner table and Hopper asking, 'Wheeler, do you think you're physically able to go more that five seconds without touching Will?' And Mike responding, 'Wow, old man. I didn't know you hated gay people.' And Will has to stifle his laughter as Joyce lightly hits Hopper for teasing them.

Give me the one time Hopper comes home to the door not being open three inches, but in fact being locked. And give me Hopper pounding on the door threatening to take it off the hinges, until Mike opens the door, rolling his eyes and says, 'Relax, old man, we forgot.' And Hopper dubiously responding with 'You forgot you locked the door?' And Mike sheepishly shrugging.

Give me Hopper being so happy that Mike and El figured out what was best for both of them and that Will is finally happy. Will, the son of the woman he loves. Will, the kid he went through hell to find, the kid he never gave up looking for even after finding his body. Will, the kid he watched be possessed by the mindflayer and go through unimaginable pain, while also being there for Joyce as she went through it with him. And now, Will. His son.

Give me Hopper not being able to stay mad at Mike anymore anyway, because he sees just how much he and Will love each other. And he trusts Mike with Will. You don't hurt someone who you love that much. You protect them. He knows Mike will protect Will, just like he has.

Give me Hopper loving Will and Mike so much, but showing it in his own Hoppery way. Give me Mike and Will walking around Hawkins holding hands because if anyone bothers them, the Cheif of Police will be on their ass to cite them for harassment.

- these will probably be very short so im gonna do two at once

- theyre aged up a lil (15/16) and its set in 2022

- the groupchat is called 'byler hate club <3' and i think that the two of them get added periodically and either get kicked or leave themselves

- their snap names are 'dustin B)' , 'lucas' , 'madmax' , and 'el🌸' (and mike and will's would probably also just b their names like lucas?) but if u wanna go a little further, i think their users would b things like ‘dustinanddragons’ or ‘dungeonsanddustin’, ‘bboylucas’ or smth, either just ‘madmax’ or ‘sk8rgirl’, el’s would probably just b her name like ‘elhop’ or ‘janehop’, and of course mike’s and will’s would be ‘paladinmike’ and ‘willthewise’ bcuz duh.

these two are a prime example of them just being in their own little bubble and completely forgetting that other people are even around. i wanted to give mike a more .. alternative? style. something similar to mine, and i usually dress in all black with bits of red, so for mike i did mostly black with bits of blue :) (also peep the pins on his backpack and the patches on the shirt and whatnot). once again i have will wearing different colour nail polish in all of them, but mikes is still only black . (first ones set in the wheeler basement , second one in the school)

this first one is kind of unintentionally sad? i didn’t realize how upset he seemed until after i finished it. actually these two could work as the second one being the day after the first. oH also in the first one i gave mike a belt that i actually own and its literally so cool its my favourite belt ever. (first one set on the hill where cerebro would b if this was still set in the 80s , second one in mikes room)

fun fact one of the reasons this took so fucking long is bcuz i was procrastinating doing the backgrounds for these two and the next one. u can probably guess why. anyways i really like how these turned out, they might be my favourite tbh. i dont really know what 2 say abt these .. i think they r pretty self explanatory. OH ACTUALLY i gave mike a black iphone w a clear case that has blue stars on it (which u can see in the second and seventh one) and will a white iphone with a .. idk what u call that pattern but its the phone in the first one. (first one is max, el + will waiting in mike’s front yard 4 him 2 get home from.. somewhere? maybe a weekend trip 2 visit relatives w his family or smth. second one is dustin, lucas, will + mike impulse-baking cookies at some ungodly hour at night during a party sleepover at mikes)

i really hate how mikes hair turned out in the first one but i spent so long on it and redid it So many times that i simply cannot b bothered 2 try and do it again. also pls notice how both of them r wearing ponytail holders in all of these (except this last one i lowkey forgot but we can pretend they r just on the other arms) tbh i dont really know if i think mike would listen 2 the nbhd or not but its what was on the shirt in the ref and i didn’t want 2 have it just b a plain black shirt so i kept it. (first one is a hangout session w the party.. i dont really have a specific idea as 2 where, so that can b up to u. second one is .. honestly im not entirely sure i just thought the ref was cute so i used it lol)

once again sorry about this taking a literal month, but my life kinda got a little fucking crazy in august so i didn’t have much time or energy to work on this. i have no idea as 2 when the next one of these will b coming, but i have a few ideas for it already. i think thats all? ill probably have some more byler art coming soon thats not gonna be like this, but no promises lol
