I know we've talked a lot about the scrying eye from the Goblin Camp, but I gotta admit... I don't think it's Orin or Gortash.

Everyone in the Goblin Camp reported to Moonrise Towers, famously led by Ketheric Thorm, the main face of the Absolute's chosen to their acolytes. Moonrise is also the main place that we see scrying eyes, in a stronghold swarming with magic users to use them, which could indicate that that's their "hub" of sorts. Even though they do report back to Baldur's Gate (Makes the Steel Watcher guarding the entrance to the city hostile if an eye caught you doing a crime), I do think information from the outposts would first and foremost go to Moonrise, as they seem to be Ketheric's responsibility. And since the information in the Gate seems to go through Gortash and his inventions, I think it's safe to say that that bit of information never made it there, as he is unaware that Durge is alive.

And Ketheric is really not that surprised to see Durge when they show up at Moonrise.

If you had shipped a brain damaged murder machine off to become a soldier for your illithid army, I doubt you'd be that chill about them walking into your throne room, seemingly awake and aware. Unless, of course, you had already been warned that they were alive and walking around.

This doesn't solve how Orin knew, but I personally think it would be pretty funny if Ketheric spilled the beans to her and not Gortash.

As much as I would love to hear Durge talk all through the game, there are so many moments I’m glad they left the protagonist unvoiced.

There are a lot of moments that the same line said by Durge takes a totally different meaning than it usually would for Tav. In Cazador’s dungeon, Tav/Durge can ask Astarion what would���ve happened if they’d met before the tadpole. It feels a little emotionally manipulative but perhaps a valid point for Tav to be making: Astarion would have killed Tav. Now he’s glad he didn’t, so why do these people deserve this?

But for Durge? Well, I imagine Durge asking that question with the same dawning horror it brings Astarion. Because when Durge asks, “What if we’d met before?” he’s not just thinking that Astarion would’ve brought him to Cazador. He’s thinking, I probably would’ve tried to sacrifice Astarion to Bhaal. Durge is staring at Astarion, knowing they were the same, knowing he is already responsible for thousands of deaths but Astarion has this impossible chance to make it right and not be responsible for that at all. So he’s trying to decide whether he wants to encourage Astarion to double down and become just like him… or break the cycle and start something new.

That’s a roleplaying nuance that might have been lost if the line had to be voiced so it read correctly for a regular Tav.

Timeline question: When do we think Gortash and Durge steal the crown from Mephisto? I can’t seem to find any specific evidence regarding how long before the start of the game this heist happens. My assumption is that it cant be that long before the game starts… like would Mephisto really just not notice the crown is gone for 10 years if it happened towards the beginning of their collaboration?

So was the crown heist the beginning of the plans or the finishing touch right as everything was coming together? What do we think??

so at least the way I write him, Gortash has defo got ADHD and C-PTSD at the very least (the arguments over which cluster B personality disorder that man has could take days & would have very little therapeutic benefit as I guarantee he does not give a shit) and my Durge clearly has some kind of mood disorder involving weapons grade intrusive thoughts and has got to be somewhere on the spectrum (murder is just one of his special interests). As the saying goes, I support neurodivergent/disability rights!!!! just also neurodivergent wrongs 😌

I think I kind of identify with Gortash in a way. I know what it feels like to be an unwanted precocious child, told repeatedly by family and others (there were no friends) that there was something wrong with me, that I was inherently bad, that nobody liked me. I wasn’t sold to a devil but the public school system did a pretty good job of approximating some kind of specific middle class torture on very neurodivergent little me.

Obviously I didn’t become a megalomaniacal arms dealing slaver about it, but I do understand why Gortash did what he did to his parents. Whether he was a born sociopath or made, there’s a real wound there. The way his mother talks about him, talks about what a horrible child he was… look. I do my best to centre compassion in my life now. But I get it.

Since I’m a sap who goes feral for a bit of eternal love, I have adopted that headcanon that Durge is immortal because they’re a sort of demi-god like Aylin. When Bhaal takes that part back, they would lose that, unless… Withers/Jergal has made them his chosen. (Or AA turns him — which is another ending I love for the twisted eternal love trope, but that’s a different post.)

My redemption Durge has very little sense of self, a very tenuous grasp on his own personhood. He remembers very little and every bit he learns makes him not particularly keen to be that self again. I’m not saying it’s healthy, but he kind of latches on to Astarion as a point of identity. Not quite like those Insta wife accounts where a woman makes her partner her whole personality, except… well… Astarion is what his world revolves around. Having Shadowheart and Gale helps at first, but most of the rest of the other crew aren’t around much, and eventually, all of them — even Halsin, Minthara, etc — will die. But he will always have Astarion, the equally immortal vampire spawn.

But if Jergal is the one keeping Durge alive, he’s going to have to go do Jergal things from time to time. And hopefully doing that would help him find some sense of purpose beyond Astarion… but I don’t think he ever will fully. And eventually Jergal is going to find he’ll have better luck appealing to the vampire boyfriend than his actual chosen, because my Durge is such a love struck mushbrain that if Astarion wants something other than what Jergal wants, his dumb ass will choose Astarion 10 out of 10 times, even if it literally kills him.

Astarion loved him when no one else did, and he will love Astarion until there’s no one else left. Otherwise, he would rather spend every day he has left making Astarion happy than have forever and waste any of it without him.
