Nicknames - Becézések/Becenevek

If you’re good at Hungarian, you can practice your language command now.. ;) Nézzük csak:

Ha van egy magyar barátod, akit becézni akarsz, akkor ezt megteheted, de csak akkor ha már elég közel vagytok egymáshoz, szóval nem ajánlom, hogy becézd például a főnöködet. (If you have a Hungarian friend and you want to nickname him or her, then you can do it, if you are close enough, so I don’t recommend you to nickname for example your chief.)

Becézni többi féle képpen is lehet, az egyik például, hogy lerövidíted az illető nevét, a másik pedig, hogy a neve mögé teszel egy “-ka” vagy “-ke”-t. (You can nickname your friend in many different ways, one of them is for example shortening his or her name, and an other is to attach “-ka” or “-ke” at the end of the name.)

A legtöbbször ezt a becézést használják a kisgyerekeknél az idősebbek. (Most of the time the elders use these nicknames for the children.)

Nézzünk néhány példát (Let’s see some examples):

Fiú/Férfi (F): Male Lány/Nő (N): Female

Gábor (F): Gáborka (Other form: Gabi -> Gabika) Áron (F): Áronka (Other form: Ári - but it’s not a common nickname) Bal��zs (F): Balázska (Other form: Balu, Bali -> Baluka, Balika) Ferenc (F): Ferencke (Other form: Feri, Fecó -> Ferike, Fecóka) Lili (N): Lilike (Other form: - ) Kitti (N): Kittike (Other form: Kittus) Nelli (N): Nellike (Other form: Nellus, Nella) Bálint (F): Bálintka (Other form: Bali, Balu)

Kivételek, Exceptions: (If the last letter is an “a” or an “e”)

Levente (F): Leventeke (It’s incorrect), but you can say: Leventécske, Levi, Levike etc. Ágota (N): Ágotaka (It’s incorrect), but you can say: Ágotácska, Ági, Ágika etc. Nóra (N): Nóraka - > Nóri, Nórika, Nórácska Anna (N): Annaka -> Annácska, Annus, Ancsi Bence (F): Benceke -> Bencus, Bencécske etc

Basic Hungarian sentences

I am - (én) vagyok You are - (te) vagy She/he/it is - (ő) van We are - (mi) vagyunk You are - (ti) vagytok They are - (ők) vannak

Eh, I know, I know. It’s hard, but you can learn it!:)

Examples: (szép=beautiful, pretty)

Szép vagyok. or Én szép vagyok. Szép vagy. or Te szép vagy. Szép. or Ő szép. (don’t use van) Szépek vagyunk. or Mi szépek vagyunk. Szépek vagytok. or Ti szépek vagytok. Szépek. or Ők szépek. (don’t use vannak)

It’s sounds more realistic if you don’t say “én, te, ő” etc. When you talk about more people, not only one person, you have to add “-k” to the end of the word. For example “szép” - “szépek”. You attach an “e” because it sounds funny to say “szépk”. So “szépk” is wrong, but “szépek” is perfect.

Ez egy fa. - This is a tree. As you can see you don’t have to use “van” which is “is” in Hungarian. Ez [this] egy [a] fa [tree]. “This a tree” doesn’t make any sence in English, but it’s perfectly okay in Hungary. If you would say “Ez van egy fa”, that would be incorrect.

Éhes vagyok. - I am hungry. Yes, this word sounds like our country. Remember that we don’t like when someone’s joking about Hungary’s name.

Szomjas vagy. - You are thirsty. Szép lány. - She’s beautiful. She is a beautiful girl. Okosak vagyunk. - We are clever. And now you don’t attach “e” but “a”. “Okosek” doesn’t make any sense, but “okosak” does. I know. I know, it’s difficult. But this word contains “o” vowels, so you attach “a” instead of “e”. Szép kép. - Beautiful picture/photo. This is a beautiful photo. Szépek a fák. - The trees are beautiful. (You can say “Szép fák” as well.) Éhesek vagytok. - You are hungry.

I know it’s not easy, but it’s not impossible to learn. So if you’re like whaaaaat? don’t worry, at first it might seem awful, but I promise you can learn it.

Otthon száz könyvem van. - I have a hundred books at home.

Szép vagy és kedves. - You are beautiful and kind.

Anya szereti a virágokat. - My mother loves flowers.
