Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β A pattern, that's what life is. I woke up to the sound of my baby sister crying again, it was so loud I couldn't ignore this time. I picked up my candle and lit it up. As I walk to my sister's room I realize that the door wasn't fully shut, which meant my mother could've been already there so me coming to check on the baby wouldn't help. While walking back to my room I heard my mother scream out for my older sister Anna. All of a sudden Anna swung her door wide open and rushed to my sister's room while I got my brother Ben to help me look for medicine throughout the house. "We must be cursed with bad luck" the only medicine we found must've been weeks, if not months old. Anna rushed down to the pantry and told us not to bring up the medicine. "So you want Elizabeth to just suffer?" I thought of saying but instead I stayed quiet. Anna then started the oven and cut up a combination of herbs and fruits, disgusting.Β
I thought while walking up to the stairs. I went back to bed and tried my best to ignore the cries of my sister Elizabeth and dragged my other sister Eleanor to my room so she wouldnβt get sick too. "Beatrice, breakfast time" my mother said. could that have been a dream? mother wouldn't be this calm after what happened last night. As I sat down at the table I counted everyone at the table, "1..2..3...". Father would be working right now, Ben would be working in the barn and Anna would be up in her room. I quickly finished up my breakfast so I would be able to skip dish washing duty but I'm not blessed with that type of luck. "Beatrice my dear do you mind going to the town to buy some medicine?" mother said, I screamed internally but eventually agreed on going since I wouldnβt have to babysit my sister Eleanor. I put on my nice dress and boots and made my way to the barn. "Ben?" I called out to my brother, "over here!" he waved at me from the piles of haystacks near the horses "We need to head into town" I told him. "Can you go alone? I'm quite busy" he replied. I got a horse out from the field and headed towards where the carriage is normally at. "Did dad seriously need to take it?" I thought to myself. I quickly took the horse back to put its saddle on it and headed to the town.Β
"Please don't go fast," I said to the horse.

I entered the town and immediately noticed a group of young women staring at me. While I was searching for the apothecary one of them walked up to me and asked why I wasn't attending school. "Oh I actually don't go to school" I replied. She apologized to me and said that the board is working on another school for poor children. I felt a pit in my stomach after hearing that, so I took off with my horse with a sour expression on my face. She shouldn't have ever jumped to conclusions to think I came from a poor family. I may not have the nicest dresses because I work on the farm but that doesn't mean my family is troubled. After a while of searching, I was finally able to find the apothecary and entered. "Do you have anything to treat whooping cough?" I asked. "We have medicine that can help fight against it, but I must ask how old is the ill one?" Asked the man behind the counter. "She's 3 years old, sir" "And you didn't think of getting a doctor immediately?" "Whooping cough has been common in my family, and we live a long way from the town so doctors would make us pay extra for the long distance" "Sad how doctors want us to pay for everything these days" The old man gave me the medicine bottle after I paid him. I got back onto my horse and started riding back. Not even close to the exit of the town a group of girls and boys my age stopped me from leaving. "Can I help any of you?" I counted and there were about 5 of them. They all started laughing. I could tell they were laughing at my dress. I signaled to my horse to start moving and they threw stones at it. The horse went crazy and ran away causing me to fall off of it. "What is wrong with you!" I shouted. I took one of the big stones that were along the path and threw it at them without even thinking twice about it. Thud They all circled around this one boy looking for the blood source. I took my chance and I ran as fast as I could. I didn't know what I was running from I didn't know where I was running to All I knew was to run until I can't

Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β It was noon by now, the heat has been killing me and I have been walking for ages. I decided to go sit under a tree and have some rest as I've become tired of walking. I spotted a figure nearing me and I just prayed that they would let me catch a ride. "Beatrice what are you doing?" I heard my father call out to me. He helped me onto the carriage and took me back home. I went back up into my bedroom to change my clothes and wash my face. "Is Beatrice ok?" Ben ran into the house, looking quite exhausted. "She just arrived, why?" My dad replied to him. "One of the horses just ran into the stable in a bad state". I made my way downstairs and was immediately asked like a million questions. I lied my way out of trouble and said that we took a different route and he got scared. Then I looked for my mother.Β
"Where's mother?" I asked Ben
"Where else"
"Crook"
"Wench"Β
I went back up and entered Elizabeth's room and found my mother sound asleep by Elizabeth's bed. "Momma wake up, this isn't the place to sleep". I helped my mother up and took her into my parents' bedroom. Back at Elizabeth's room, I fed her a spoonful of medicine and put a wet cloth on her head. Anna came into the room and told me she'd watch over Elizabeth. I went down to start helping with supper.
"Dad, why were Ben, Anna, and you the only ones to catch whooping cough?" I asked.
"Something to do with our immunity, once you're older you'll understand all the doctor talk"
My family is so keen on me becoming a doctor it's kind of frightening. I don't like syringes or knives or anything of that sort. I'd rather bake and stay at home without having to use a knife for anything but slicing bread.Β
At supper we were quieter than usual. Father hasn't asked about how our day has gone, mother hasn't told my brother to use the correct spoon or fork, and Anna hasn't told me to get ready for my embroidery lesson. All that was on my mind was that boy that I threw the stone at and what my punishment would be.
"Mom the medicine has worked wonders for Elizabeth, she's sleeping like she hasn't slept ever before" My sister Anna told my mother. I couldn't believe that I forgot about my sister. I acted so selfishly by only thinking about myself when I was on my way home instead of worrying about her.
"That reminds me, Doctor Williams invited us to his house for tea on Thursday celebrating the fact that we have come up with a business plan" My dad has always talked about Doctor Williams yet we have never met him or his so-called family. Me, Ben and Eleanor joke around saying that Doctor Williams is dad's imaginary friend at work but when we get caught we had to give up something we love for a week. He gave his fancy broach, Eleanor gave up her doll βMargaretβ and I gave away my recipe book. I have to admit that was one of the dullest weeks of my life.
"What's the business plan about?" I was finally able to ask. The table grew quiet as if they were hiding something from me. When I looked at my brother he was looking down, and when I looked at my sister and mother they both were whispering something to each other. It was only me and Eleanor looking like fools who didnβt understand a thing. No one was going to say anything else so I excused myself and went to my bedroom to get ready for bed.Β
I couldn't sleep, all I could think about was what I did and how I can get myself out of the problem I'm in.
