The entire plot of She-Ra would be kind of hilarious from the POV of a random Horde soldier the same age/cohort of cadets as Catra and Adora (we know there's more we see on screen whose names we never learn)

Because just imagine

You grow up and sleep in the same bunk room and those two are constantly sharing the same bed, and Adora is at least friendly with everyone but if you're TOO friendly Catra hisses at you and threatens to cut you

Shadow Weaver is obviously obsessed with Adora and using Catra to control her (...and vent her own anger whenever she feels like it), so you just uhhh stay out of that as much as you can

And then one day right after Adora makes Force Captain she disappears and both Shadow Weaver and Catra lose their fucking minds about it, as if there's not dozens of other Horde soldiers, why is it always about Adora

Oh and there's some new tall blonde princess named She-Ra who keeps kicking the Horde's asses?

What do you mean that's also Adora??? THE FUCK???

Oh and look Catra is still weirdly obsessed with her and the two of them seem to start every battle only to run off and fight each other, for fucks sake they should just bang already, you're tired of getting beat to shit because of those two

Anyway at some point Shadow Weaver is gone and then Catra is too, for a while; but oh nope ha ha there she is again

Also at some point some kinda portal thing opens up and everything is HELLA WEIRD and then suddenly everything is back to normal

Except after that Catra's giving orders ALL THE TIME, and she gets meaner and meaner and if anyone tries to talk to her about it they also get shouted at

And then Catra and Hordak disappear, then Horde Prime shows up, and the world almost ends but it doesn't and the Fright Zone is covered in plants for some reason??? Wow the sky is bright without all that pollution. Weird.

And then you find out that the reason the world didn't end is ....Catra and Adora had a make-out somewhere underground and also, now Catra is glued to She-Ra's side and making goo-goo eyes at her

LIKE. The plot of She-Ra would be absolutely batshit from their POV and I can't stop laughing about it, like what do you MEAN I've been sent to fight in battle over and over because these two dipshits couldn't just tell each other they wanted to bang for MULTIPLE YEARS

In literature and other related studies, we have the concept of canon, those books and authors that are considered, for one way or another, the building ground for our culture/literature and/or the best/most important books or authors to have ever existed, at least within an established time frame.

Most of the canon is from the past, centuries ago, or at least a couple decades. But there are also books and authors that are canonized in the present, while they're still active or at least alive.

The funny thing with canon is that it defines a certain culture, and that culture is, itself, defined by it. There's the quality factor, sure, and how important it was, but there's also how important it is in the present. When canon changes, things can change their place in the canon or get in or out of the canon. For example, in the 15th and 16th centuries, classical literature was at the center of the canon, and it was way more important than it is now (in part because it was replaced by literature influenced by it).

And, something even funnier, changing a specific canon is, in a way, defying said canon, saying other things can be the models instead, that they have the same right, if not more, to be the models, to be what inspires people and what people are thinking about. And defying canon is always met with resistance, sometimes bigger, sometimes smaller. People can have really strong arguments over canon. In Portugal, in the second half of the 19th century, there were some really dirty arguments over literary canon; if I recall correctly, people died over canon discussion.

BUT, the fact that canon changes is neither good nor bad. And some thing getting a lesser place in the current canon doesn't mean it lost its impact or that it will be forgotten in the future. Its canon status on a certain era won't be washed away, and if it stays in canon, that status will still be known without a doubt. And, in the same way, something getting inside the canon doesn't mean it will last or remembered, because it can lose its place the same way others before have and others after will. Canon is a reflection of a specific culture, of a specific society, with a specific angle and a specific intent. Changing the angle or the intent, or focusing on a different culture or society will probably lead to a different canon (feminist canons in literature, for example, to promote the visibility of women in literature and in certain time periods specially). And when a given society changes, their canon will change too, more or less, but it will, and that change will be met with resistance.

THIS is what's happening with this particular ship war. Tumblr Top Ships Bracket's polls, much like the Tumblr Sexyman, are a pure reflection of canon in Tumblr culture, or in Tumblr fandom culture at least. Destiel losing it's place at the top is a sign of a changing in culture, it's a change of canon. Right now, this poll shows, Destiel ("one of the ships that built Tumblr", as some say) is not the number 1 ship for the majority of tumblr users. The causes of this I can't tell, I'm no expert, but the violent reactions of some people towards this loss is a clear and very well example of the resistance towards changes in canon. Destiel hasn't left canon (it just doesn't seem to dominate it), and even if it did have left it, that wouldn't have taked away any of its merits and how important it was in the past.

Canon changes, and that's natural. Canon is a reflection of a society or culture, but it's not a reflection of every person within that culture. And canon is a reflection of that culture's present, not its past; it may affect how that culture sees and conceives its past, but not how that past was. I get it if some people are sad Destiel is losing right now, it's a natural human reaction. You created your own canon in your time. Let other people create theirs. Accept changes. Maybe it will change back! Or maybe it won't. But that's ok. After all, it's just fandom. Nothing will take your fanwork away from you.

And to the Suletta/Mirorine shippers, don't be mean. From the little I've seen you weren't the ones starting this war, but don't attack what other people enjoy and love. Defend yourselves, as you're doing from what little I saw, but try to not hate back.
