Southpaw

Light, camera, action
youtube
The movie i am analyzing is called southpaw which is one of my favorite movies. The specific scene i will be talking about is the above one. The main actor is a boxer and his wife does not really like him fighting. Some of the scenes show him in the ring throwing punches and receiving punches. I like the fact that whoever was filming added this specific scene because it shows the horrible ways the wife might be feeling once he is getting punched. The camera takes us into the boxers shoes, but at the same time we also understand how the wife might be feeling when she goes to his fights. We see both points of views in just one scene which is incredible. This scene also shows the wife’s reaction and just by the look in her face you can tell she is not enjoying her husband getting hurt.
In most of the scenes the camera is behind the main character, i felt like this was made this way because it shows us how and what the boxer might be feeling. It shows us just about everything he had to go through and it makes whoever is watching as if we were right there living the same exact thing. He is shown with his wife and daughter and it makes the viewer feel as if we know the family and were a part of it as well. In other movies the camera angle is typically a couple feet away. In this movie however everything is all up close and personal sort of say. I believe the reason why the camera is close when he is hugging his daughter and telling her he loves her it is supposed to show how close their father daughter relationship is. It also invites us in to know the family and makes us feel welcome just by the way the camera is shooting. I did not ever really pay attention to this but it makes a lot of sense now.
The camera is always filming right behind the couple. I believe the reason it does this Is to show how close the couple are to one another. Since most of the scenes are shown up close and personal it is important for us to know their bond and how he will be feeling once she passes away. Although you can’t really get that vibe yet until later on in the movie.since they are always affectionate towards one another and their daughter it just shows how close together they are as a family and it invited the viewer in as well.
There was another scene when he gets into a car accident and the camera is behind him, while he’s behind the wheel and it shows the viewer how he might have felt when he crashed and everything he lived. It showed us the very first impact when he crashed into the tree and how he managed to get out of the car and survive. This scene was very important because it showed us the horrific impact and it made the viewer feel as if we were right inside the car with him. As if we were to have crashed with him.
The last scene I thought was very significant because it shows how his wife passes away. It was very dramatic, bloody, sad, scary all in one. It shows the husband suffering for the loss of his wife and literally we felt his pain too. This overall was the best scene and they did a really great job with the camera angles as we’ll because it also shows the entire room from the very top it’s up close and personal but it also shows it from a far not too sure why they did it this way but It worked out perfectly well. I enjoyed the fact that they added this specific scene in the trailer I felt that was a really smart move.

Suicide Squad’s Soundtrack
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL0-fSrtEXVm86w05hKFM1q7RJg-sxKJ5p
Suicide Squad is about a group of super villains who have been in prison. They were brought together by the government, to help try the save the world from a catastrophe that is bound to occur. All these super villains all have different abilities and different inhuman, super powers. They were needed to be able to work together as one team. One could imagine the type of music it should have. The movie is strictly action so the music would have to have upbeat, fast and action in it too.
Tumblr media
The first song that was introduced in the Suicide Squad movie was “House Of the Rising Sun” by The Animals. They used this song to introduce Will Smith’s character “Deadshot”. This song just sets the mood it just fits into the movie as a whole. It helps the viewer prepare, for a dramatic scene in a way. The reason is because it shows the way the prisoners; or in this case the bad super villains, are treated if they don’t obey the guards. In which this case Will Smith’s characters gets tortured for threatening a prison guard. This song isn’t too dramatic and it isn’t too loud it’s kind of slow and has a little bit of a story tell somehow someway it goes perfectly with this scene.
Tumblr media
The second song that was introduced first in this movie Suicide Squad was “You don’t Own Me” by Grace Feat G Eazy. It’s incredible how one song can Make a whole difference in a movie. It fits so perfectly because it introduces some of the main characters like Harley Quinn. When creators of the movie introduce her she is being caged and locked up.the lyrics somehow fit into the characters life. Harley Quinn even says “you don’t tell me what to do ... I could do anything I want” hence the reason why they put this specific song on this scene. The prison guards are trying to make her and other characters behave or trained, and make them act a specific way, which doesn’t fit them it’s not who they are. The song has a very dramatic and catchy lyrics and ironically it fits with what the characters might be feeling throughout the movie. I feel like it was important for them to play a catchy song with one of the main characters as well.
Tumblr media
Another song that was beautifully included in this movie was, “Gangsta” by Kehlani. This song let alone describes the Jokers and Harley Quinn’s relationship from beginning to end. Also I’m he beginning of the song kehlani has like this evil giggle that Harley Quinn sort of has. This song is creepy, Catchy, up beat, dark and somewhat evil. Its sort of like it plays a big role because it describes the main characters relationship with the joker. If another random song would have been included instead of this one,it would not have fitted perfectly as much as this one, mainly because this song was made for it.
There were many songs that were included throughout the movie, but one that everyone knows about is “Heathens” by Twenty One Pilots it’s a bit of a mixture from rap, rock and pop. Its very mysterious and it leaves the viewer with a sense of wanting, to not only pay attention to what’s going on in the movie but also like pay attention to lyrics which is very important and meaningful. I found it important just as I’m sure the producers did too, that this was supposed to be one of the main songs for the movie. In a way this song needed to fall perfectly with the movie and it was able to tell a story without giving the entire movie out.
Tumblr media
Lastly the final and of course another important song that was added to the soundtrack was, “Sucker for pain” by Wiz Khalifa, lil Wayne, imagine dragons, Logic, Ty Dolla $ign and X ambassadors. This song just wrapped up the entire movie as a whole. The lyrics talk about, “tying up” “chaining up” “tying down” “going to war” and being “a sucker for pain”. The entire song literally describes the characters and what they had to live. It sort of puts the viewer in the characters shoes. A lot of the artists that are in this song are also famous and well known which was also important to perhaps attract more viewers. The song was dark, twisted in its own way, it had a sort of emo vibe to it. It fits extremely well with the characters personalities since they are evil villains who are psychopaths and murderers.

Life Of The Party Ethos and Pathos
The Movie trailer I chose was Life Of The Party
https://youtu.be/T1B1CxmAXLk
In which one of the most successful comedians, Melissa McCarthy plays the lead role. She is known for playing lead roles on pretty well known movies, from “Spy” , “identity thief” , “Tammy” and also “Bridesmaids” etc. Throughout the entire trailer it plays uplifting, exciting , happy and upbeat music. In which I happen to believe that they use Pathos, since it appeals to emotion. The reason being is because it is a comedy movie and they are inheriting an uplifting song that fits well into the trailer. They would not have included a sad or slow song since it is not portraying a dramatic event or scene, it more so should make their audience laugh rather than cry. Their goal was to make people cry but of laugher per say. It also appeals to different types of audiences for those people who enjoy comedy like myself.
Since Melissa McCarthy is a successful comedian they made her be the lead role. In a way their goal was also to attract all Melissa McCarthy fans. They have her name written in really big, bold and red lettering, this really tries to emphasize the importance; that she plays in the movie. It also emphasizes the fact that it was going to play in theaters on Mother’s Day. This was a really smart move, considering the fact that most people like to spend their that day with their families; watching this movie could fit into their plans for the day.
Continuing with Pathos, in the beginning of the trailer I noticed that they first incorporated the funniest scene from the movie to grab the audiences attention. In the movie trailer itself they managed to only add funny scenes. The directors of the movie avoided any dull moments that might have occurred in the movie, just to not throw the viewer off. Another thing that they pointed out was the type of tone they used which was very happy and humorous sort of speak. Another example of pathos that is shown on the trailer; that one may not have noticed as much; was the background color it happens to be more of a warmer color, usually a warm colors portrays a happy and or uplifting mood. Now speaking of uplifting mood another huge pathos is when the mother says she regrets not finishing school, and how she should have finished. That emotion and feeling can draw in a certain audience allowing the viewers to relate or know someone in that certain situation.
The way that the directors attempted to grab the audience attention was by portraying to not have any regrets in life. That one should finish what they have started and to continue doing what he or she loves doing. In some form or way it gives a life lesson on to never giving up; no matter what the situation is, keep pushing forward. The directors were shooting for drawing in that type of audience that can relate to the situation that the some moms might be in. Writing about this it goes back to how this particular movie has to do with a mom who is considering going back to college, it makes it an even better reason to have this movie come out in theaters on Mother's Day. I really do not think this was a coincidence at all, but more so planned out. The directors more than likely tried to lead into the mother daughter relationship as well. On how a mother daughter relationship is always important. This really can make the chances greater for those same viewers likely to be watching this movie. After all what person doesn't like watching comedy and all at the same time being taught a life lesson? especially one that someone can relate to.
Maybe also this movie also conveys the importance of having an education, this could somehow bring in a set of viewers that are in that predicament of not knowing whether or not they should continue college or start college. Perhaps the directors were trying to also trying to attract a feminist audience because Melissa McCarthy also portrays a strong female role in this movie she is indicating that women should believe in themselves in the movie she even gives her sorority sisters a pep talk of something in between the lines. In pretty much all her movies she somehow, someway leaves a powerful message to all women. This movie also conveys the importance of friendship and helping someone that is need, which I’m sure many people of all ages can relate to.
The movie directors also use Ethos because like I stated before their main actor is pretty well known; world wide, she only comes out on comedy movies. So whenever someone hears the name Melissa McCarthy especially as her being the lead role you automatically will assume that the movie will be funny. That’s why I believe they wrote her name hugely in words that were noticeable enough for the viewer to read. Something that they discreetly managed to sneak into their trailer is their company. I had to pause and replay the video to make sure but they add their company names, “Warner Bros Pictures” and “New Line Cinema” they are trying to advocate the fact that they are with a successful company that had been around for decades and decades. It’s interesting that so many people don not seem to catch up on the little things. This was a great movie all and all and the movie trailer I chose really convince me to watching it, Melissa McCarthy is actually one of my favorite comedians mainly because she also comes off with a strong powerful motivational speech in at least all her movies.
