before haeun can finish, the instructor begins to introduce themselves and something about… a makeup workshop?! danny’s eyes widen, mouth gaped open in confusion. wait! “uh… gotta go!” he reaches for his backpack again and begins to rise from his chair, hoping he could sneak out before it was too late -

you there. didn’t you hear me? we’re starting now. danny turns and bows his head apologetically, an awkward grin tugging at the corners of his lips. “i’m sorry, i’m not supposed -” are you trying to hold up the entire workshop, choi hyunseung?

his shoulders tense as he’s addressed by his full name. he knew the instructor looked familiar. he flashbacks to his first year of camera tests… so much eyeliner. his eyes begin to water at the thought. perhaps it wasn’t the best idea to complain loudly about how much he absolutely hated how he looked that day… in front of the senior makeup artist. “i really have to -”

sit down. 

the instructor’s tone has him plopping back into his seat without much protest. he glances over at haeun with a frown, whispering. “hobbit, you’ll be my partner right?! i don’t want to be left alone having to work with… the instructor. i’m really good at coloring in the lines, so… i should be pretty good at this, right?”

     she winces as she watches danny get absolutely chewed out by the instructor though she doesn’t say anything, feeling a bit bad for her friend and she makes a mental note to buy him a strawberry milkis in apology ... even though she hasn’t done anything wrong. being witness to this was bad enough, she thinks, and she lets herself zone out a bit as she thinks of how to meet up with him again in order to give him said milkis.

     either way, she feels a bit bad for him. she doesn’t say anything as she comes back to the present and starts paying attention again, making sure not to step out of line considering she doesn’t want to get yelled at too.

     hearing her name, haeun glances over at the other trainee with a slight grimace on her face—not at the prospect of being partners but more at what he had said—she nods instead of saying anything, just playfully rolling her eyes. “but i get to draw on your face first then!” she says, using that as her only condition. which is generous, considering she likes tot hink she’s pretty good at makeup overall. “deal?”

     haeun has started to get more comfortable in front of the camera since her first ever vlive. and her first vlive show had helped quite a bit too, though she’s still a bit shy whenever it comes to showing her actual personality on a show, instead of just dancing. she’s the most confident in that still, but she’s getting used to coming more and more out of her shell with every appearance.

     and of course, she’s all for trying new things. and pole dancing is something that she’s always wanted to try and never had a chance to before.

     “hi! i’m jeon haeun,” she introduces herself quickly, bowing to the camera before giving a quick introduction of herself, including that she’s been a trainee for a year or so now and that she’s mostly just been focusing on that and on dancing. after that, she just turns her attention back to sookyung, waiting for what they would be doing next,

how was it already the third episode? it only felt like yesterday that sookyung was pitching the idea of soondong to the higher ups. but here she was, standing in a mirrored room in her most presentable sweatpants with cameras aimed at her and the guest standing next to her. she was confident, moreso than in the previous episodes. and it was with that confidence that she went on to do her usual (could it be called usual after only being done twice before?) greeting.

“hello hello everyone! welcome to episode three of soondong, a show all about trying new things and testing your physical abilities! hopefully you know me by now, but just in case; i’m bang sookyung, the host - obviously,” she says, laughing a little at herself. “i have to say, i’m very excited for this episode, as we’ll be tring out something i have been wanting to do for a while now: pole dancing! but before we get into all that, how about we first get into the other reason i’m excited today, yes? and that is our guest for the epsiode, miss haeun! haeun-ssi, would you like to introduce yourself? maybe tell the viewers a little bit about yourself and what you’ve been up to?”

wrestling

an isac 2021 solo

     considering she had always been told she was pretty strong for her age, when she had been able to choose what she could do during isac, she knew exactly which she wanted to do. there were a few different options actually, since she was interested in trying a lot of sports when she was younger and had played on her school teams, but she had ultimately decided on wrestling.

     it wasn’t even like the wrestling that they did at her junior high school back in the states, but more of the korean style which she hadn’t hugely done before since the high school she went to was an arts on and she was majorly focused on dancing above everything else, but she had tried this before. kind of. once maybe.

     so haeun is purely relying on gut instincts for this, and she smiles at the trainee she was up against before bowing politely. she was pretty sure she could do this, and maybe not win all of it but she was sure she could win at least one or two rounds out of three. 

     when she faces up against the other trainee, haeun will be the first to admit she feels a bit bad when she underestimates he own strength and flips the other girl onto her back without much effort.

     after though, she wins a second round against another trainee before she’s stuck against the last contestant. they’re standing there, gripping each other’s bands carefully and trying to flip them. it’s a struggle, because their strengths seem to be pretty evenly matched. 

     there’s a bit of a standoff, before they’re told it’s a draw.

     which means she needs to compete again. 

     when she comes back for the rematch only a little while later, haeun is ready. she wants to win, but she’s not going to be entirely sad if she loses. so she takes a sip of water before stepping up into the ring and she bows again to greet the other girl, clearing her throat to get ready. 

     this round is much shorter, will less of a standstill before haeun loses her balance and ends up on her back, surprised and winded but not at all angry at the loss. she would have to practice harder for next year, hopefully, and get the gold.

     but she’ll take the silver happily.

you were born in america right? what do you miss most about being there?

VLIVE Q&A — ( QUESTION ONE. )

     when the vlive starts, haeun will admit she’s a bit nervous as she always is when she’s in front of any camera. she’s getting better, after having guested on several vlive shows now but it’s really different when she’s by herself. the cooking one was easy because that was all set up already for her and she just needed to tell the audience how to make a recipe she had made hundreds of times already.

     this time? she has to answer things on the spot, and hell, everyone knows she has no brain to mouth filter. hopefully she doesn’t say anything bad ...

     the first question that she’s given surprises her because it’s not one that she’s expecting. she had mentioned before that she had been born in the states, along with her brother, but she hadn’t thought it was something noteworthy that fans would bring up and ask. but it’s an easy first question and she purses her lips as she thinks. 

     “well, there’s a lot of things but the biggest thing i think is that i miss speaking english?” she sounds a bit unsure here, but only because she’s not sure if that really counts. “i grew up speaking korean, but only at home with my parents and even then i would usually speak in half korean half english. the only time i really had to speak full korean would be when i was talking to my grandparents! and even then, they knew a bit.” 

     she pauses again, before she shrugs. “i think my biggest culture shock was that there’s like, no garbage cans on the streets here? that’s off topic wait—” she glances at the staff behind the camera before switching her train of thoughts back to the correct rail. “i have to say i miss the snacks! everything in korea is a bit on the sweeter side, which is hard to get used to since i grew up with only salty snacks. so yeah, that’s what i miss the most i think. though, if i kept going, i could probably go on for a while.”

Ichika nods when Haeun speaks her approval, still taking a moment to roll the bead between her fingers before she sets it down on the table. Using her nails, she gently pushes aside some of the beads before she finds what she assumes is an “I” amongst the letters and gently pulls towards her to join the small collection of cute pastel beads she’s selected. She’s never made anything of the sort before but it doesn’t seem hard, and this was the point right— something fans could treasure? 

It’s the younger’s comment about not having many fans that draws her attention back, and she looks at the other with a confused bat of her eyelashes. She may not know Haeun too well, but there’s something about the younger trainees that has come to weasel their way under the cool exterior of her heart, and she lets out a small sigh. “You may not have many fans yet,” she begins coolly, evenly, “but you will one day and the effort you put in now will be treasured.” It’s a weird thing to say, even to Ichika’s ears the phrase doesn’t seem to completely convey what she really means, so she tries again. “I think what fans you do have will treasure these for a long time.” 

While her words are meant for Haeun, part of Ichika knows this applies to her as well. She knows her own popularity in Korea is ever growing, something she’s done her best to cultivate after the fall out of her graduation. She’s not foolish to believe she’ll be as popular as she had once been when she returns to Japan with LGC Girls, but as she picks up a frustrated pink butterfly and holds it up to the light to examine it better, Ichika hopes the move is a good sign. “I think that’s a good idea,” she replies, glancing back at the younger with a small smile. “It’ll make them more special, won’t it?” 

Reaching over Ichika places the bead closer to Haeun before she selects another, a flower for herself. “I think that one suit you more.”

     she sees ichika take and ‘i’ and immediately starts looking for a ‘y’ as well, quietly sliding that towards the older girl. even if she doesn’t end up using it, haeun is sure that it would be nice to have just in case? she’s not too sure though, but she thinks that her fluency in english should help for something right? 

     other than the obvious translating thing.

     the words that come from the older girl surprise her slightly, and she glances up at the other trainee, nodding slowly. ichika’s words are true, and haeun knows that she should believe that too. and she does. she was more stating a fact that being self-deprecating or anything, but it’s still nice to hear, she won’t deny that. “i hope that some of my fans really will come,” she comments quietly, shrugging. “i know a lot of them know me through my brother, but i hope some of them become my fans too. even if it’s just from association,” she says, grinning after. “i’m going to steal his fans!”

     glancing at the bead placed before her, haeun can’t help the smile that spreads across her lips at the sight of the butterfly bead. it reminds her of her best friend, and the beaded bracelet she had made for the other girl and she turns her attention back to the assortment of beads, back to the task at hand. “maybe i’ll make a few custom ones too ... it won’t hurt right?”

so i was watching the recent legacy vlives where a bunch of their artists have been uploading videos of their favorite fall recipes or whatever and after watching jeon haru (the kid from lgc boys) make pajeon in his, i was so surprised when he said he has a sister who’s ALSO in the same company?? apparently it’s jeon haeun! i did some digging afterwards and found out she only joined the company last year… maybe after seeing her brother do well, she wanted to join too but she must be talented though if she was accepted?

anyways, i also found a fancam of them interacting at the recent legacy family concert too and it was so cute… haeun was showing off a haru banner and haru looked so surprised and happy to see it!!! it was funny to see her tease him and haru playing around with her!

i never realized they were related but after seeing them next to each other and then THIS PHOTO (apparently it might be a role he played before?), how did i not notice this sooner?! i can’t believe legacy managed to get such cute siblings… i hope they get to work together some day TTTT

     when she had seen the list of workshops that were offered, she knew immediately the ones that she wanted to take part in. vocal, maybe. rapping, if possible. costume design would be really fun but she doesn’t think she’s creative or patient enough for that. music production was definitely up there. and makeup? she loved playing around with the limited makeup that she had, so she knew she had to sign up for that. absolutely. no doubt.

     so she finds herself there, chatting with a fellow trainee who she had befriended and she’s laughing at some joke or anecdote that had been told when she hears a familiar nickname. that only one person in the whole world calls her. and it’s full of affection, as always, but she reacts with a roll of her eyes anyways because he would expect that from her.

     she’s a bit surprised he’s here?

     she’s even more surprised at what he says next. “i mean—i am interested in song production but oppa, this isn’t—”

     the instructor interrupts her by welcoming them all to the makeup workshop and haeun glances at danny pointedly, mouthing a sorry, i think you’re stuck with this. 

✶ ━━ (RE)MIXED UP

it was unlike daniel to be running late - and he’d be sure to mention it to the workshop instructor… as soon as he figured out where exactly the workshop was. luckily, this session wouldn’t be recorded so… if a tree is late to falling and there’s no cameras to catch it, did it even really fall? he’s sure the saying goes something like that…

after taking a moment to check his hair ( still tucked neatly in place ) in the reflection of a chrome decorative piece, he shuffles into the room reserved for the production workshop. it seemed the session still hadn’t started, with trainees shuffling about and mingling amongst one another. daniel gives a slight bow to the instructor, still counting participants in the room, before searching for an empty seat. 

he slides into one near the front of the room and leans against the tabletop, resting his chin against his palm. he starts to get lost in thoughts of what he would be having for lunch that day, when the sound of a familiar laugh draws his attention. “…hobbit? you’re taking this workshop too!?” he grins, turning in his chair to face haeun, interrupting her conversation with some trainees from the girl’s junior group. “i didn’t know you were interested in song production!” technically, he didn’t know that he was interested in it himself… but it was definitely better than spending an hour learning about ‘diction’ ( whatever that was ).

     haru maintains his skeptical stance because he knows haeun shouldn’t be taken lightly. past experience has taught him that the younger shouldn’t be completely trusted - as in, believing her words are true when she says things like she ‘promises’ whatever present she has for him isn’t weird. she did get him a really nice birthday present this year though so maybe she could be trusted… this time.

     the suspense kills him though, even if it’s only a few seconds; it feels like forever and he wonders if he should use this time to run away but the part of him that’s curious makes him stay. (and truthfully… he just wanted to spend more time with haeun. he had taken advantage of the thought that she would always be there and being apart from her made him more lonelier than he had anticipated, despite being surrounded by so many people for project origin.)

     what he doesn’t expect is to see a slogan pulled out from behind her back and the sudden cheering as she imitates a fan that makes him burst into laughter, both out of surprise and amusement. “what–” he manages to gasp out before laughing more. “my biggest fan? really, jeon haeun?” he’s grinning teasingly as he walks closer to her again now that he knows the present isn’t suspicious after all, and reaches out for the slogan to inspect it. “is this really me?” he asks in wonder, marveling over the photo of him on one side and his name in text on the other. he’d seen a few of them before but never up close like this and it was fascinating, even more so that someone would make one of him. his smile grows wider soon after though and he looks back at his sister with excited eyes. “where’d you get it?”

     “i’ll be honest and tell you i found it thrown on stage from over there,” she points in the general direction that she had come from before sneaking up on him, grinning happily. she’s both happy for his reaction and the fact that she had just happened upon the slogan. it wasn’t like she had been keeping an eye out or anything, but she had seen the ‘ha’ character and had been curious, though she was pretty pleased that it had ended up being one of her brother’s.

     (there’s a small part of her that’s disappointed that it wasn’t her name, but at the same time she knows that he’s much more well-known than she is. and strengthens her resolve that she needs to debut as soon as possible.) 

      actually, she’s still pretty happy she had found the slogan though because she could give it to him. it was much better than if she had found the slogan of someone she didn’t know because then she wouldn’t have had the chance to give it to someone. “if i’m not your biggest fan, then who is? mom and dad don’t count!”

      “oh i think that would be cute,” she comments, glancing down at the beads in front of her. she had bought the kit on a whim a while ago, when the trend of making he bead rings were big in south korea and had made some for her and her friends. 

      she’s not quite sure how she had ended up doing this with ichika, considering they weren’t the closest friends or anything but also? haeun doesn’t mind at all. she loves talking with people and interacting and trying to make new friends in general is pretty fun. she’s only been a trainee for about a year though, she’s not quite sure how many fans would be there that would want something to remember her specifically. “though, i think i’ll just make general ones ... i don’t think i have that many fans.” 

      it’s not said in a self-deprecating manner though—just something matter-of-fact. because it’s true, she’s sure. she needs to be more proactive if possible, and do as many things as she can to get her name out there. it’s her resolution for 2021, if only because she’s not sure if she’s ready to debut anytime soon. maybe near the end of the year, if she’s lucky. especially since she missed lgc girls japan, unfortunately. 

     “we could do different colour patterns maybe?” she suggests, holding out pink and white and purple and pale blue as two different sets. “the fans can choose maybe?”

There’s no escaping the uncertainty Ichika felt when it came to the sports festival, uncharacteristically invading her thoughts in latching on to any mention of the event. While some of the trainees seemed excited for the prospect of competing and spending the day in sportswear, eagerly observed by fans, that kind of enthusiasm was hard to muster when you weren’t a particularly athletic person. Since she had come to Korea, there was no doubt that her dancing skills had improved tremendously, but dancing and sports weren’t necessarily the same, and this one shortcoming was something that seemed to eat at her in a way she didn’t know how to deal with, let alone verbalize. 

The fan gift part was the easy part. Despite her own views on some of her peers, some of the opportunities presented to her by the company, Ichika had always acknowledged the power of fans, and how much they played into everything she wanted. If anything, making something was easy, and looking down at the beads in front of her, perhaps be enough to win some favor. 

“We’re making charms?” She asked, trying to give the sense that she was verifying this information and not that she had been somewhat lost in her own thoughts. How she ended up agreeing to make something with Haeun seemed so blurry, but in truth she didn’t mind– much to her surprise the amount of things that she did mind seemed less prevalent, at least since Halloween. And Haeun seemed nice enough to even include her. “Should we put our names one them?” Reaching over, Ichika picked up a white bead with an “S” on it, a small frown forming. Would it look too gaudy?

a trainee mission performance solo

     the months of practicing tumbling for this performance has her feeling pretty hyped actually.

     she’s not too nervous about it anymore, considering she’s been practicing and practicing and she knows that hyperfixating on it won’t do her any good, because if she’s nervous it’s more likely that she won’t do well and if she thinks she won’t do well then there’s no way that she’ll do well. it’s a mental hoop she has to metaphorically jump through. she’s pretty sure she’ll be fine.

     the song is one that she likes though, though she’ll be honest that she had a phase where she had listened to a lot of these older kpop songs and she genuinely enjoyed this trimester’s mission. honestly, there were other songs she wished she had learned which was why she had reached out to some of her friends in other groups to teach them to her.

     hopefully they would have more free time this upcoming trimester for her to get them to finish teaching the choreographies to her.

     but this performance in particular was one she was very excited for. perhaps it was the cartwheels she was going to get to do, or perhaps it was the fact that they were performing a boy group’s song ... but either way, haeun is absolutely hyped for this performance. 

     as she waits for her team’s turn, she quietly cheers all of her team members on before the music starts and she’s ready to go. 

     the slight nerves she had felt earlier completely melt away as she dances and cartwheels and flies across the stage. this performance is by far her favourite of the 8 weeks, and she thinks it’s perfect that it’s the last week. 

     after all, as the saying goes: save the best for last!

“the only crit i give is con! thank you very much!” he fires back playfully, lacing up his sneakers before popping back up to his feet. “alright, if you insist! but stretches first. and i mean every limb! i will not be held liable for any preventable injuries!” he says sternly, wagging his fingers before giving his own shoulders a roll. of course, he’d be one to talk. he was the master of throwing himself into practice cold. but at least there wouldn’t be any windmill fiascos today if he could help it!  “you’re in the 10 out of 10 group, right? lucky for you, i had to perform that song for an eval my first year and still remember most of it too! i can definitely give you some tips that’ll guarantee you look crisp. and i mean crisper than burnt pizza crust!”

“and you know, i wouldn’t normally be doing this. my private dance lessons are usually quite expensive… buuuuut -” he drags out in a sing-song voice, rolling his neck dramatically. “i’ll give you the little-sister-discount! one free dance lesson for say… two free strawberry milkis at lunch tomorrow? deal?” he tugs one arm over his chest - partly to stretch, partly to shoot a single finger gun in her direction.

     she rolls her eyes, unable to hide her exasperation at his words. despite really looking up to him as a dancer and also just as a person, haeun also has her moments where she’s tired of him. and those moments happen pretty regularly. but that’s probably why she sees danny as a pseudo-older brother figure too ... despite having an actual older brother. 

     which, is fine. she can have two brothers.

     the deal is a decent one though—even if haeun isn’t too sure about how much he says his dance lessons are. it’s a fair deal because she’s watched hundreds of different fancams and dance covers of 10 out of 10 and she still isn’t fully confident in her re-interpretation of it. 

     she counters his finger gun with a shot of her own back at him, clicking her tongue afterwards. “it’s a deal,” she agrees, making a mental note to buy the older trainee strawberry milkis before she comes to training tomorrow. “did you bring me snacks today, oppa?” she asks, curious because he almost always did. “i’ll work extra hard if you did~”

     she’s genuinely pretty excited about getting taught the dance by someone who had learnt it for the whole nostalgia thing that all the trainees were doing. it was a fun concept, and she wouldn’t deny that she’s really been enjoying learning all the old school dances, even if she had been shunted out of the adult ceremony performance on the premise that she was a minor. it’s kinda unfair, but she guesses that she understands. kinda. 

     having arrived early, because haeun is genuinely very excited and it’s even better because danny is the one who had agreed to dance with her and she won’t deny that he’s one of her favourite people in the company. when the door opens, she had just finished setting everything up and she grins, seeing who it is. “i did!” she says proudly, having wanted to be helpful and being glad she had somewhat succeeded. “i was planning on just learning from you but if you want to give me concrit, i won’t say no!”

✶ ━━ DANCE BREAK

WEEK SIX! ‘NOSTALGIA’ - PRACTICE SESSION

daniel bops his way into the dance studio, singing mango, tok, tok, tok, tropicana! under his breath. he might have had a catchy jingle stuck in his head for the past three hours ( he’d gone through just about all the flavors on his walk to legacy that morning… ), but there was really only one thing on his mind - crushing the again and again performance coming up in a few days. so, when one of the younger trainees mentioned being interested in a quick practice session during free training, he jumped at the opportunity to show off his moves. and of course he wouldn’t miss an opportunity to hang out with his favorite hobbit! ( a term of endearment in his book ). 

“ah! you beat me!” he says with a click of his tongue, tossing his messenger bag on the floor next to a stack of folding chairs before flopping down into one. “did you already set up the music?” he asks, kicking off his shoes to change into his favorite dance sneakers. “do you want to do a quick run through of your set first?”
