"I've done so many things except fishing on a fake pond in a fake fair, apparently," Baek says cheekily and shakes his head disbelievingly. "I've never been to the top of the Eiffel Tower despite going to Paris a few times. Water sports I haven't done many either, like jet skiing and snorkeling or surfing. I actually do want to swim with sharks, too," though that with their schedule, Baek has no idea how he'd fit that in AND arrange time to bring Hyoseop along, too, if he so like to. Baek barks out a laugh and cocks his head to the side, "it surely is not that difficult, I think the way to go is just not overthink it," he says while trying once again and missing the loop by a scratch. He hisses. "Have you ever gone fishing? Like actually fishing, with a boat and a hat and all of that?"

“yes, how come i’ve run a marathon before but never caught fake fishes in a fake pond? it feels like a game i should’ve tried when i was a kid” hyoseop shrugged. as much as hyoseop felt a bit stupid doing this, his inner child was happy, he never got to do things like these, now adult hyoseop gets to do it. “you’ve been to paris multiple times! eh?! before joining type zero, the furthest i had gone was jeju island…”. “also what kind of way is that to end your answer? swimming with sharks? suddenly i think i might be smarter than you” probably not, hyoseop is pretty dumb.

“nope, my family was too busy running the family restaurant as a kid to do those kind of stuff” he shrugs “and when i got older my parents were too busy, and i couldn’t really figure out who to go with, if not my dad” he hums. “okay!” let’s do it, hyoseop feels energized and motivated, ready to catch that damn fish!

“ah… i failed again” he pouts.

hyoseop slightly dislikes his sister right now. when one cousin visited and sori managed to get the cousin their favourite idol’s autograph, another cousin wished for the same, an autograph from their favourite idol. and this time it should be rather easy, since their cousin wanted an autograph from eunhye, hyoseop figured sori could’ve easily asked her, but instead she refused to do so, said it was too embarrassing to ask a friend for their autograph, so hyoseop had gotten the job instead.

he waits outside the fabula practice room, palms sweaty, hyoseop doens’t think he’s ever asked for an autograph from anyone before, well, besides his own sister. hyoseop still doesn’t entirely get why sori couldn’t just ask eunhye, and he also hopes his cousins will stop asking the siblings for autographs from someone else. when eunhye finally leaves the practice room, hyoseop is quick to stop her. “ah, sorry! eunhye! could i uuuh, borrow you for a second?”.

something with water again

hyoseop wouldn’t call himself unlucky, but then again, he seems to often find himself in unlucky situations. like that one time he was stuck in a tree, or the time he ate a chili by mistake, there’s also the time he was stuck in the elevator for hours, and then there’s that one strange first encounter. he still remembers it quite clearly, the first time he met jasper the two were targets for some prank and ended up wet.

hyoseop hadn’t really spoken with the other in some time, but when hyoseop spots jasper in the cafeteria, he decides to go up and talk to the other. “hey jas-- ah!” and with that he falls, the culprit being water that has been spilled on the ground, and apparently nobody deciding to dry off the floor, so now, hyoseop is on the floor. hyoseop wonders, why is there always water included some way or another when jasper and hyoseop meet.

yeonwoo crouches down in front of the pile of twigs and dried leaves they’ve gathered, rolling the flint between his fingers like it’s already an answer. he knows the cameras are on them, knows this will probably air with goofy background music if he fails but still... he wants to get it right. “i’ve seen this done a hundred times,” he says with a little confidence that’s more for hyoseop’s sake than his own. he strikes the flint once, twice, sparks flying but dying before they even touch the tinder. his brows furrow slightly but he doesn’t let the frustration show, only letting out a soft laugh. “okay, maybe not as easy as it looks on tv.” he sits back on his heels for a moment, mind racing while he keeps his expression calm. there has to be a way — something the survival expert had said earlier about air flow and keeping the nest tight. yeonwoo rearranges the leaves into a tighter bundle, adding a few strips of bark and glances at hyoseop with a determined grin. “we’ll try smaller sparks, closer. the trick is probably patience.” he leans back in, steady this time, striking carefully until a tiny wisp of smoke curls upward. but that's it. still no fire.

hyoseop has never been known as being particularly smart, but it’s never really bothered him. compared to his sibling, he was definitely the dumb one out of the two, but she did use to spend a lot of time on studying, which was something hyoseop never really did. his fans probably know it too, he’s pretty sure they do, because every time hyoseop joins some variety show, it’s easy to tell he’s on the stupid side. hyoseop doesn’t need to be smart, he’s pretty and fit, and kind of funny, he can’t be everything at once, so, he’ll just continue being dumb.

without knowing how much knowledge yeonwoo has about starting fires, hyoseop just assumes it’s more than how much knowledge he himself has on the topic. “woah” hyoseop looks at the other’s failed attempt “at this point i wouldn’t be surprised the editors edit us to look like dumb and dumber” he shrugs, a laugh following. hyoseop crouches down next to the other “we’ve only tried once, we can’t give up, so let’s give it another shop” he nods his head.

create a cake

well, this wasn’t hyoseop’s first time legacy forced him to do something creative that included something sweet. for his birthday he had had to create a drink and treat, then there was the chocolate for love month, now it there was a little cube cake sitting in front of him to decorate, not just that, it had to match his personal style, kind of had to have a ‘cha hyoseop’ vibe about it.

there’s a small chocolate cake in front of hyoseop, and for a few seconds he simply just stares at it, questioning what to do. “i will” he continues looking “make this into cha hyoseop in cake form” he adds, a satisfied smile sitting on his lips.

“the first thing i’ll do is covering it with an orange glaze” he finds the glaze “why may you ask?” he says as he starts covering the little cake with a bunch of orange glaze “because orange was my most iconic hair colour” a short laugh escapes his lips. “since joining type zero, i’ve basically only had brown or black hair, but, if you’ve known me for a while, back when i was a trainee i dyed my hair orange, and after doing so i had my first netizen article written about me” he puts down the glaze. “so, i hope i can go back to orange hair some day, since it feels like that’s when it all started, y’know? that was the time where people finally noticed me” he nods his head a bit.

“i’m going to be a bit boring for the next creation, and anyone who knows me knows what i’ll be doing now” he then proceeds to pick up a pink glaze “i’m adding a flower” a short giggle escapes his lips as he begins drawing the flower onto the mini cake. “when i think of type zero’s cha hyoseop, i think of flowers, some fans even gave me the nickname ‘flower boy’”.

“i think it looks good now, but i’ll just add a last thing” he then picks up a black glaze, drawing a ‘z’ at the corner of the small cake “z for zeniths and type zero” he nods “i’m satisfied with my creation.

Baek feels the urge to tease, but to be honest, in a way, the relationship he has with Type Zero's members are probably one of the closest and long lasting ones he has had in his life in a way. As someone who has never had that many close friends, and more acquaintances, Hyoseop's words are weirdly touching. "Cheers to that," he says instead of coming up with a funny remark. "What should we do next? Anything you ever wanted to do but never had the chance to?" Maybe if someone happens to take pictures or videos of them in this moment of weakness, Baek will say that he's playing it up for the cameras. How silly of them, not being able to play a children's game. He suddenly starts blaming his parents in his head for not taking him to festivals to play it as a kid. "Alright. I'm going to play for real now. See that green one around the corner? That's my catch," and Baek enters in position and focuses on the toy. Surprisingly, this time, he's successful. He throws a fist up in the air. "See?! Easy!" and he opens his palm to high-five Hyoseop.

though hyoseop is an extrovert, he’s usually not very good at making friends, and even worse at keeping them around. he has a tendency to forget friends, and at some point, when hyoseop is never the first to reach out, people get tired of maintaining a friendship with him. the type zero members might be the people he’s closest to at the moment, they spend so much time together that it’s hard for hyoseop to forget about them, it is nice, having friends like these.

hyoseop shrugs “not sure, and you? anything you haven’t done before you wanna try?” hyoseop looks at the other, curiosity in his eyes. there’s an instant clap coming from hyoseop once the other is successful “see! this children’s game has nothing on us!”. though, after watching the other, hyoseop is still unsure about if he can be successful, doesn’t seem particularly hard, but hyoseop still isn’t sure about it.

jungle interview

the days surviving in the nature both felt like years and like seconds at once, hyoseop partly misses it, but he’s happy to be back in seoul. there doesn’t go much time before the production team catches him to film an interview, but hyoseop figures the sooner the better, else he might just forget everything they’ve done.

‘did you learn anything new from this experience?’ hyoseop hums for a bit, thinking of an answer before opening his mouth, after a few seconds though, he finally responds. “well, firstly, i can apparently sleep anywhere” he shrugs “when i realized i’d literally be sleeping on the ground i was thinking i’d barely get any sleep, but i slept peacefully through the night and ended up sleeping longer than i usually do…”. “some useful things i learned was how to use an axe and how to start a fire, i also learned that eating random berries isn’t a good idea, luckily someone stopped me before i did that… did i learn anything else?” he hums again. “i guess i learned i’m more hardcore than i think?”.

‘what were your biggest struggles during the experience?’ “ah? there was so many new things to learn at once, how to start a fire, how to cut wood, how to catch food, how to clean water, it was all just a lot to learn in such a short amount of time” he nods his head a bit. “i think i originally set my hopes too high for myself? thinking it would be easy, and though i did learn to do all that, it wasn’t easy” he shakes his head.

‘how do you think your teammates did?’ “that’s easy to answer, they did well” he shrugs. “we were a great team to be honest, we all had knowledge about different stuff, my teammates were always ready to help me learn and i was ready to help them learn” … “but…”. “who the hell decided on bringing a soccer ball? i’m back in seoul now and still unsure what we could’ve used it for! everybody chose something useful, an axe, matches, knife, the list goes on with useful stuff and then there’s just that soccer ball! it keeps me up at night… i just can’t figure out what it would be useful for”.

Baek has the decency of at least looking a little bashful as he stops for a few seconds and ponders over the question. He then pouts and shakes his head with a frown, "I don't think I've ever been to one," he says tilting his head to the side. "If I've been to one, I must have been too little to remember, but I've never seen any pictures, and quite frankly, that's not the type of place my parents would ever want to be caught at," he says honestly and shrugs. With the toy rod in both of his hands, Baek stares at the fishing pond with partial feigned seriousness. "It can't be that hard, right? Kids do this. We just have to hook them. Better yet. What if we take turns? I try once, and if I fail, you go, and vice versa?" and to demonstrate that, Baek tries to do as he said. Only that luck wasn't on his side, and maybe he has never gone fishing either, so unpracticed doesn't even begin to justify his unsuccessful attempt. "It was just a demonstration," he says flippantly, "your turn."

“this’ll be both of our first time then” he smiles to baekhyun “i hope we have many more firsts in our friendship” he’s quiet for a second before continuing “ah, that sounds a bit cheesy, doesn’t it?” hyoseop laughs. considering baekhyun and hyoseop debuted at the same time, they have had quite a lot of ”first times” together, experiencing their first comeback together, first music show together, and the list does go on and on. hyoseop doesn’t mind it, he’s rather happy about it, baekhyun has become someone he values highly, and he’s happy for their friendship.

hyoseop nods “it can’t be hard, like you said, it’s a children’s game” he shrugs, just to watch baekhyun fail moments later. “let me show you how it’s done!” he tells the other, attempting but meeting the same fate as baekhyun: he’s unsuccessful. “eh? why is it harder than it looks?” hyoseop pouts as he looks up at baekhyun “you try again, maybe we were just unlucky on our first try”.

while jiho is glad that he had chosen matches, now that they had actually been given the items they had been asked about originally. though, he'll easily admit that he's thankful that they hadn't actually been dumped onto an island and left to fend for themselves, with only the camera crew there. at least they had the survival experts to help them. though, he also kinda wants to try to make the fire without asking for assistance. if possible. "i think we need to find a dry or dead tree," he says, not entirely sure but he doesn't think a live tree will burn. "just be really careful when you start swinging that thing," jiho adds, a little amused but also very wary about the situation they're in right now. "we don't want any accidents."

while they were surviving out in the nature for two days, this didn’t feel too wild nor extreme. there was a camera crew there to film them, hyoseop wasn’t alone out here, and they’d been given useful items (except that soccer ball who hyoseop is still unsure of what they can use it for). hyoseop wasn’t panicking right now like was the situation real, he was enjoying it, he got to hang out with friends while “attempting” to survive out in the wild.

hyoseop looks down briefly at the axe, then back on jiho and giving the other a nod. “if there’s one thing we don’t want, it’s an accident” he continues giving a strong nod. “i’m not gonna let anyone get hurt! except a tree i guess, but i’m not entirely sure if they can feel pain, if they can, they’re very quiet about it”. 

“okay so uh” hyoseop looks around “spotting any dry or dead tree around here?”.

he enters the room and immediately starts looking around, deciding to make his way to the side of the room that had a whiteboard - maybe something to write with was left there? "did you find anything, hyung?" haru calls over his shoulder to the other, still glancing around while he asks. "i don't see anything ye-- oh!" he's about to say before cutting himself off, eyes spotting a marker on the table. perfect. he walks over and grabs it, holding it up like he just discovered treasure after a long search. "i found a marker!"

hyoseop honestly didn’t think he was old, but the people debuting became younger and younger, and suddenly people ten years younger than hyoseop debuted. so, maybe, sometimes he felt a bit old, but only by comparison. haru had debuted before hyoseop, but he was still younger than hyoseop, and it felt a tiny bit weird for a sunbae to be calling him ‘hyung’. “thank you! no uncles here” hyoseop shook his head, still refused to be called that.

it feels slightly stupid that hyoseop is having haru search for a pen and paper along him when hyoseop is the one who asked for an autograph. he really should start having that pen on him like his sister said he should, would make autographing much easier, both giving and receiving them, not that hyoseop was intending on asking more people for autographs. his cousin better appreciate this autograph hyoseop is getting for her.

“a marker! woohoo” there’s a relieved sound leaving hyoseop’s lips and then a small cheer follows. “now it’s just… something to write on” he hums “don’t think she would care much what you write on, i think my cousin would go crazy for an autograph from you whatever the autographs is written on” still, hyoseop looks around briefly to find some paper, no luck, but he might just be bad at spotting things.

surviving in the nature for two days was not something hyoseop had expected to happen. truly though, for boys energy, hyoseop could make no guesses about what was about to happen, the show constantly managing to surprise him. at least it was fun though, and hyoseop was happy to be on the show, it was something else than the hours of practice he usually did, plus, he got to see other people than his fellow members, which he of course loved, but damn did he see them a lot.

yeonwoo is a fellow idol friend who hyoseop truly feels like he doesn’t see enough, so it is nice to be on team with the other, attempting to survive in the wild together. right now? the two are attempting their best at making a fire. “so uh” hyoseop places his hands on his hips “won how do we do this?” he turns to look at the other. “i don’t think i’ve ever started a fire before, at least not on purpose”.

cutting through it

surviving in nature for two days were honestly not something hyoseop had expected to be doing. though by now, he should’ve learned that anything could happen on variety shows. he’s still quite surprised, but he thinks he has a good team for the job, while he doesn’t know everyone equally well, he knew majority of his team members prior to boys energy, and got to learn the rest during boys energy. he thinks his team picked some pretty good items, besides the person who picked a soccer ball, which he still questions what they could use it for, maybe they could play soccer to pass the time or something.

hyoseop picked an axe, not that he has especially much experience when it comes to using axes, but in his mind the most important thing when stranded on an island was making fire, and an axe could cut trees to make fire, wow, what an amazing mind he has. he looks at jiho, axe in his hand, the two being tasked with gathering tree and branches so the team can make a fire. “any experience with cutting with an axe?” he turns to look at the other “let’s just hope nobody loses a finger today”.

Thinking back on it, Baek doesn't think he has ever attended a festival or a carnival for all that matter. His family wasn't big on family time, and carnivals were hardly places for a CEO and his wife to step on and grace everyone with their presence. And even as a teenager, he had never venture to those, not even to spite them, which is crazy thinking back on it. He'd love to make them angry. So, he had heard about fishing games in inflatable pools, and have seen them in dramas and movies before. But their pop-up event with Samanco might as well be the first time he had ever played with these in his 25 years old life. "This is extremely silly," he comments to Hyoseop who's circling around the poll with him. Baek has two fishing rods in his possession and hands Hyoseop one of them. "Do they get more discount if we catch more? Because I'd love to win, but is it random? How does this even work?"

carnivals weren’t really a thing in the cha family while hyoseop grew up, they were simply all too busy. they didn’t exactly have a lot of money, the money they made were from their shared restaurants, which his parents always worked at and hyoseop and his sister worked at when not in school. their family time almost always revolved around food, either eating or making it. when hyoseop’s dad moved to seoul and took hyoseop with him, he became a successful model, but by that time, hyoseop was too old to care for carnivals.

so, he’s pretty sure this is his first carnival. “have you ever been to a carnival before?” he finds himself asking baekhyun, staring into the little pond in front of them. “this feels like a children’s game, so why am i so excited?” hyoseop shakes his head, a laugh following. “i have no idea” he says as he looks up at baekhyun “your guess is as good as mine”.
