Evaluation
In order to appeal to the upper strata, my fascinator features British tweed and real feathers, creating a luxury look suitable for the country. I have used sustainable methods of manufacture by being minimal in wastage and the feathers are cruelty free, further increasing the appeal as sustainable fashion is currently trending.
My photoshoot of my fascinator featured a wealthy and sophisticated looking young female equestrian with a well-groomed horse, successfully communicating the message that my fascinator is suitable for the races and targets the leisure class.
My fascinator has been totally handmade through much fabric manipulation and hand sewing. It is a unique, high quality item, that is arguably high in value through its exclusivity as a one-of-a-kind handmade piece of craft. It is elegantly charming and quintessentially British in style; successfully designed for a sophisticated customer such as the Duchess of Cambridge to wear to an event. Dittmar argues ‘consumers are said to have a need for uniqueness’ (2008, p. 213), this is especially true within the upper class as they seek to remain differentiated from all those they view to be inferior to them and my fascinator successfully caters for this.
Overall I am really happy with my finished outcome. I think my final photograph and fascinator itself, clearly communicate my concept and aesthetic and I am rather pleased with how luxurious and elegant my fascinator looks.
This was the first time I have ever made a headpiece and it was thus very difficult to construct with no previous experience. With no headblock available, it was even more difficult. I persisted out of necessity and eventually figured out solutions to all the problems I encountered in the construction of my fascinator. It took a long time to make and my hand sewing could have been better however I am still very pleased with how it has worked out through this long period of trial and error.
The only things I would improve would be the quality of my manufacturing. As mentioned, my hand sewing could be more discrete and the base of my fascinator is a little more bulky than I would like. Having not made a fascinator before, I think I could have done a much better and more professional job but other than that, I think I did very well and I am very happy.

Blog Layout Development
Inspired by Ash-Lee’s blog, I changed my blog layout to the same theme as hers giving my blog much more character and making it more exciting. However after doing so, I noticed that there were errors with the layout.
In the last three photos, there is some bizarre overlaying. My posts are overlaying each other so that you cannot see what is actually there. In the last image, you can see my fabric swatches post overlaying my post about the construction of my fascinator which has meant that you cannot see my post about my fascinator. Similarly, my photoshoot moodboard is overlaying my post about my favourite images from my photoshoot.
This theme as exciting as it is, has also made the text too large for my personal preferences. These problems with this theme has meant that I have abandoned it and changed to a much simpler, very clean and minimalistic theme.
The theme I have chosen has just one singular column like on Lottie’s blog, meaning that my blog is extremely easy to read. It is not busy or exciting, it is just nice and simple and I think that is the most effective and safest layout because it cannot really go wrong. Furthermore, because I have posted so many photos, these can be appreciated and viewed much more easily than before as there are no other photos surrounding it, distracting the viewer.

Blog Review #4: elizabeth-kirby.tumblr.com
Kirby’s blog is very visually appealing. It is so engaging because it is full of images and is so colourful. The choice of pink for the background is very appropriate considering she is exploring ‘feminism and the gaze’. Her title ‘MY FACE IS UP HERE MY BRAIN IS UP HERE’ is relevant and contemporary and I really like how creative it is. I am impressed by her life drawings and the masks that she has created and am curious to see what she will do next because she is currently undergoing a change in idea. This design development is very interesting.

Blog Review #3: classconsumption.tumblr.com
Ash-Lee’s blog is really exciting. I absolutely love the layout full of visuals and text accompanying them. Her use of 4 columns makes her blog quite busy but it is still very easy to read and understand and it is through these 4 columns that her blog is so exciting. Her header is appropriate to her concept and she raises good points regarding the use of furs, skins and any kind of animal in fashion. I particularly like her sketchbook work and how this has been included in her blog adding variety and contrast to her digital work.
I like Ash-Lee’s layout so much that I am going to apply it to my own blog to see if it enhances my blog at all.

Blog Review #2: lotedgar-cop2.tumblr.com
Lottie’s blog is super modern and contemporary in style. It is very clean and minimalistic and thus easy to understand. The layout of her blog reflects her accessory as both her concept and her blog are contemporary.
She has clearly done lots of research into similar practitioners, investigating how they have photographed their accessories and has used this research to inform her own accessory and photoshoot. Her final photographs are really interesting and I love how she has used film to photograph them, creating a cool aesthetic.
The simplicity of Lottie’s blog is quite inspirational and I am thus going to apply this minimalistic technique to my own blog to see if it improves it.

Blog Review #1: cop2manisha.tumblr.com
Manisha’s blog is really fun to look at because it is so colourful. Her use of opposite colours is very effective because it makes her blog ‘pop’ and it is very eye catching. Her blog is clearly laid out and very bold. She has reviewed numerous blogs drawing inspiration from them and each blog is very different, giving her a broad view of how blogs can differ in layout and style.

Editing the Final Photo #2
After picking the final photo I realised that this photo is actually more effective at advertising my fascinator. My fascinator stands out more in this photo.
I also realised that the bright blue bridle on the horse was too distracting and took the attention away from my fascinator so I edited it to be a more dull colour.
I think the black bridle looks best in comparison to the navy bridle because it looks more natural and therefore I choose this as my final photo.

Editing the Final Photo
I thought this photo was my strongest from the shoot and the most effective in conveying my concept so I did some editing to try to make it worthy of being used in an advert.
I felt the image looked too flat so tried to blur out the background to make my model and the horse stand out. I tried lots of different blurring techniques to see what worked best and I played with the vibrance to make the model stand out even more.
I wanted my image to come alive and look really powerful and eye catching.
I do not do photography or any kind of editing as I usually leave this to the photographers that I collaborate with so I was really out of my depth with this and did not really know what I was doing. I just experimented with different techniques to see what worked.
The last image is my favourite edit.

Photoshoot
I found a horse riding school close to the horse racing stadium and asked if it would be possible to do the photoshoot there with the horses. I was given permission and then returned the next day to do the shoot.
Unfortunately I was very limited in what I could do as the horses all had owners and were not allowed outside their stables without permission from the owners. Obviously the owners were not all there at my convenience and therefore I could not take any of the horses out. I could only take pictures of them like this, with only their heads. I had to improvise with what was available.
The horses kept moving so it was quite difficult for me to take pictures and for the model to pose with them.
These images are the photos I took on my phone and have not been edited.

Photoshoot Planning
Having moved to Milan, I felt quite out of depth planning a photoshoot. In Leeds I have lots of contacts to help me, for example I have make up artists, photographers, models etc. However having moved to Milan less than a month ago, I am unfamiliar with the area and do not really know anyone. I did advertise twice for a photographer, asking everyone I knew at my new university but no one responded to my adverts. I even directly approached people asking if they did photography or knew any photographers but no one could help me and therefore I had to do the photoshoot myself.
I directly approached a girl in my class that had the look that I wanted and asked her to model and she kindly agreed. I asked if she had the tailored clothes that I wanted to create an equestrian style look, in colours that complimented my fascinator and we managed to put a fantastic outfit together.
No one at all knew where I could find some horses for my photoshoot so I had to conduct all the research myself. I googled stables in Milan and then visited them. My first stop was this horse racing stadium called Ippodromo del Galoppo di San Siro. I could not find any horses here at all and asked the people inside and they said it would be impossible to get hold of a horse for a photoshoot but I did not give up and kept asking.
I considered a Plan B which would be to photograph my fascinator in the stadium because the architecture and VIP seating area was really pretty and vintage. This fits my concept of the fascinator being worn to the races. Although it is not really ideal for the races on Ladies’ Day in the Spring/Summer months, it is still suitable for the races because of how formal and decorative it is. It is very traditional in style and would have been perfect at the races a few decades ago, for example after the First World War.

Versace SS17
The message communicated by this photoshoot by Bruce Weber in the countryside of Kentucky is that of ‘freedom’.
‘The Versace SS17 collection is all about a woman’s freedom to be whomever she wants to be.’
‘Confidence’, ‘movement’ and ‘freedom’ are all words used by Versace to describe and promote the collection.
I particularly like this photoshoot because it shows all the different ways one can use a horse to enhance a photoshoot and communicate a message and feeling.
This photoshoot has really inspired me.

Photoshoot Moodboard
This Gucci advert was my starting point as I saw this and became inspired. My initial idea was to have photos of a model wearing my fascinator in the countryside as Le Jabot & Stock do in their photos however after seeing this Gucci advert, I decided that this is the sort of message that I want to communicate ‘inspired by the beauty and grace of the equestrian’, ‘icons of heritage’ and ‘legacy’, all words that I would want to associate with my brand.
The use of reigns in the photos connote a sense of tameness and ability. The graceful faces of these models, dressed elegantly in shirts and jackets along with their soft long hair suggest that these are sophisticated young wealthy girls.
I researched other photos of equestrians looking powerful, classy and distinguished for further inspiration and looked for a model similar to the ones in these pictures to communicate the same message.
The association between fascinators and horses is one that works because horses are closely related to the upper class of society. Horse riding is traditionally a sport undertaken by the gentry whether it is to hunt, to play polo or simply to have a leisurely ride. Horse riding to this day is still associated with the wealthy. Likewise, horse races were and still are, generally attended by the upper strata of society. Therefore it is fitting to include a horse in my photoshoot next to my model dressed as an equestrian, wearing my fascinator because this portrayal of wealth, status and tradition is still communicated.

After finding the right positioning through hours of fabric manipulation and pinning the veil in place, I sewed it onto the fascinator. With the veil securely in place, I could then finish cutting the veil to shape, rounding the edges so that they followed the shape of the jawline with the length of the veil reaching the chin.
The fascinator is complete.

Fabric Manipulation
Slowly I cut the veil down to achieve the right size and shape, experimenting with shapes as I did this to see what I could achieve. This was an entire case of trial and error and I deliberately bought more fabric than I needed in case this did not work.
As displayed in my photos, I had a lot of problems with this fabric manipulation as the veil kept looking really puffy and had more volume than I wanted. I therefore had to carefully manipulate the fabric so that there was less volume and the veil did not protrude from the face like a helmet.
