PLACES
A few weeks ago I travelled to Bridgnorth in Shropshire to visit a leather tannery. After some research into how leather is treated in tanneries I realised that one of the process creates waste that I wasn't aware of and haven't seen being used or re used in a creative design way.
This waste, leather shavings known as wet blue, is a result of the shaving process that occurs after the chrome tanning process. Currently this waste created by this tannery ends up in landfills.
The plan is to use wet blue in a creative way on my final project.

MY WORK
The first part of my final year at University I focused on sourcing and transforming waste materials.Every year tons of timber wastage along with other materials go to landfills.
In this project I created new composite materials using waste materials post user consumption and post production. Material such as wood savings, sawdust, leather, paper, foam, and yarn are bonded using natural adhesives in order not to damage the environment further. The material were sourced from various places and are treated before being transformed.

MAKING
Processes are very important in my material making. Materials are stripped of colour or are added colour. Materials go through different treatments before the final material is created.
Dried. Shredded. Soaked. Dyed.
Trapped. Compressed. Etched. Cut.
Here is how I have being creating a few of my sample materials. A very rudimentary mould.
