As a person wronged by Altar and have been called to be a tracer and theft by them, I wholeheartedly support you and Lich. Especially after seeing the hypocrisy that Altar tends to show by indeed tracing and pushing the boundaries on racial and culturally sensitive topics and issues that POC face. Instead of sending anons to muddy the waters of the community, not just Altar, but people need to own up to their mistakes and wrongdoings. Basically drop the pride and admit wrongfulness.

This is the second anon you've sent me, and it took you this long to talk about the racism issue? It's tied into every single other issue with him; you can't claim to be an ally while ignoring POC when they tell you that your approach to depictions of their culture is insensitive. You extra can't claim to be an ally and outright reject POC telling you that you haven't done enough research and are putting an actual fascist dogwhistle on your blog. "It's just fantasy" isn't an excuse.

And you can absolutely have similar vibes! If the similarities are incidental, then all Altar has to do is say so and put up a disclaimer and that part of the post goes down. Writers HAVE been sued because of similar vibes between their IP and fan content. I am being cautious.

Disclaimer: I recognize that the similarities I've noticed might be coincidental, HOWEVER comma, because they are so dead-on and relate to original worldbuilding for a novel that I'm writing and definitely plan to publish, I have to say something. If I don't, my IP is in jeopardy.

That said, I don't think the similarities are incidental. I think they're extremely intentional, so I'm just gonna say it with my whole chest before I put everything else under the cut: Altar is a bland, uninspired plagiarist and the comm needs to stop enabling him.

Why I picked Preacher in particular:

In June of 2019, Lichaltar teased at some new developments and characters on their blog with this post of Boo and the Heaven-and-Hell Serpent.

In July of 2019, I posted this detailing the Lusii of the Southern Carnival, at Lich's request. While the worldbuilding was original and intended for a book I was in the first stages of conceptualizing at the time, they liked it and asked me to adapt it for Homeward so that they could use it on their blog for their character Boo. The two of us collaborated on the creation of the Heaven-and-Hell Serpent, Ourobors, and everything else was mine. In the same timeframe, I posted this. There was a lot of content between both of our blogs related to Southern Alternia and how I had adapted an original concept of mine that I was kind of playing with to form its backbone.

A few months later, Lich shared some artwork of one of the leaders of the Southern Carnival, the Bellringer, a tall troll in all black wearing a wide-brimmed black hat with a veil over his face whose followers as an incarnation of one of the Mirthful Messiahs wore colorful masks, in a groupchat that they were in with Altar.

Shortly thereafter, Altar posted a moodboard and then artwork of Preacher, and it set off my alarm bells. And then there was Marron.

Marron is a blatant trace of Adonis and Corbon from lich's blog. Don't take my word for it. Look for yourself.

Beyond that, once again we're using concepts that originated elsewhere without crediting them whatsoever. This character is an amalgamation of concepts expanded on and introduced on other rpers' blogs, and I see no credit for those inspirations anywhere. There's a word for that.

The word is plagiarism.

When Lich and Altar were in a group together focused on trolls that were part of an organized crime organization, Lich invited me to poke around in the groupchat in hopes that I would join, and I was interested. I asked Lich a few questions, and they asked them to Altar, and eventually an exchange was had wherein Lich and I both expressed discomfort at the way Altar was approaching culturally sensitive topics.

You can't just mush together La Cosa Nostra and the yakuza without a lot of thoughtful, careful research that Altar was never going to do. And I don't have time to explain why this design is a fascist dogwhistle, or how that was explained to him, only for him to condescendingly brush it off because "it's just fantasy."

Maybe add "in-depth research into how words and images are coded" to your busy schedule of tracing, plagiarizing, and sending your wife to white-knight for you, Altar.

Credit your inspirations, stop tracing other artists' work, learn some active listening skills for when you decide you enjoy floating in racially fraught waters, actually.
