Working in collegiate sports (including hockey) has given me such perspective because like. Everyone talks about dads like Rick Celebrini and Paul Marner and the horrible stuff professional athletes go through to get to where they are like getting pelted with tennis balls by your father until he beats the idea of becoming a goalie out of you and getting punched in the stomach so hard by a coach that you throw up and “stolen childhoods” and like. Yeah that shit sucks but at least some of these guys made it. Meanwhile there are people who’ll never touch their sports again after college or even after high school after going through all that they did? Like they go through so much but it’s “fine” because it worked except for some of them it didn’t. And you can try to argue that the guys that made it made it because of what they went through and the guys that didn’t didn’t because they never had to go through similar stuff but I’m not convinced.

The protocol is you share your own team’s goodbye message with a ❤️ and a bland but heartfelt ‘gonna miss you bro go smash it’ you don’t share the rival team’s post after lurking in their likes all evening, with a deliberate call back to a post you made earlier in the season, like this is some secret code, like you’re staking ownership still over your boy, like he’s yours to be proud of. Not when the whole of hockey media is swirling with trade rumours and insane commentary on your friendship. Unhinged thing to do in those circumstances! But he’s Trevor. And he’s cut through the depression stage of grief and he’s onto the anger. He will not go quietly into the night, he will rage, rage against the dying of the light. That’s what he does!
