This girl was chasing cars when a truck with a trailer clipped her. Her only injuries were the protruding eye and a small laceration on her neck. We removed the eye very routinely with no complications and she acts like nothing ever happened! She is doing wonderfully.

Canine Influenza Virus (CIV)

Everyone is freaking out about the canine influenza virus lately, so hopefully I can shed some light on the topic. CIV is spreading fairly rapidly. I live in Michigan and it is now on all of our borders. The new strain, H3N2, is the most prevalent and only reported strain of CIV as of now. CIV can be spread through direct and indirect contact. If your dog gets boarded, groomed, or goes anywhere with a high volume of non-immunized dogs, getting the CIV vaccine would be worth getting.

Keep seeing this floating around various veterinary groups on Facebook and it never fails to make me chuckle to myself 😂

The amount of times I’ve said to people “it could be loads of things, I literally can’t say for sure. Plus I’m a nurse not a vet.” and they’ve replied “yeah yeah I know, okay like what though? Could it be this?? I’ve googled it and it sounds exactly like it?”

I DESPAIR.

Good Morning Everyone!! What is everyone’s favorite animal and why? Being a vet tech I come across a ton of different animals and everyone always has their own reasons for having them.

I’ll start. My favorite animal is an elephant because they are beautiful, graceful, compassionate, and courageous.

Things that clients do that frustrate (aka piss off) veterinary staff

1. A new client not informing us that their pet is a known biter.

2. Questioning the diagnosis because Google said something different.

3. Wanting us to help your sick animal but not wanting to run any diagnostics so we can actually figure out what is wrong and treat appropriately.

4. Calling for an appointment in the morning, not showing up, show up late and getting pissed when we can’t accommodate you.

5. Asking to hold….now this is a bit controversial I will admit. But, in most cases owner’s don’t know how to properly restrain and I have seen the owner and the doctor get bit as a result.

6. Letting your children run wild in an exam room.

7. Bringing in a second pet for an exam when you are only scheduled for one.

8. Telling the technician one history and the doctor something completely different. Why yes, I do enjoy looking like a complete idiot. Thank you.

9. Ignoring the technician during discharge then calling us 30 minutes later because the technician didn’t tell you when to give the meds.

10. Wanting free medical advice over the phone…when you aren’t our client.

11. Lying about your recreational drug use when we ask if the pet got into anything. We know…we always know.

12. Complaining about the cost of vaccines.

13. Sending the spouse/SO that knows nothing about the pet to the appointment instead of the one that actually does.

14. Google DVM

15. Medical professionals that treat humans assuming they know veterinary medicine.

16. Telling us that their pets ears/eyes have been infected for months and you guess you should finally do something about it…then complain about the bill because it has gotten so bad.

17. Refuse pain meds for your obviously painful pet because you didn’t need them when you hurt yourself that one time.

18. Asking us to euthanize your healthy pet because you are unable to care for them…and refusing to surrender because no one will ever love them as much as you.

19. Telling my doctor’s they aren’t “real” doctors because you don’t like their diagnosis or the bill.

20. Rudeness.

21. Declining heartworm preventative because your dog doesn’t leave the yard.

22. And my own personal hell…commenting on your pets horrible breathe…discovering severely advanced dental disease then refusing to do a dental…because….$$

This was my desk buddy all day yesterday. He had a cryptorchid neuter done (right testicle retained) and he needed some extra cuddles!

Okay I also meant to post these 100 years ago and just remembered. This horse is a polydactyl on ALL FOUR feet which is the coolest thing ever, and I think about him at least once a day. Polydactyly in horses originates from one of the splint bones, which are remnants of toes from the ancestors of our modern horses. It typically does not bother them, so long as the extra hooves are trimmed, although sometimes they interfere with the other legs. Most often they are surgically removed when the horse is a foal for aesthetic reasons. Not this cool little guy though!

Tipping of the ear after doing a coalition spay or neuter is a controversial practice. My clinic is in a country setting where there are a TON of barn cats and roaming cats. We offer a cheaper coalition spay and neuter that includes tipping of the ear. This procedure is done while they are under anesthesia and never causes any blood shed. This picture was taken 30 minutes after the procedure this morning. The tipped ear indicates to other farms and pet owners that this cat has been surgically sterilized, so that they don’t have to worry about overpopulation or trying to catch the animal to take it in to be surgically sterilized.
