Create A Cheery Mood for Holiday Blues By Meochia Nochi Thompson 5 Tips for Turning Seasonal Blues into Holiday Cheer! Although the end of the year presents the best holidays to share with family and friends, the Grinch can still manage to find his way in to pee on your white snow. I didn’t think raining on your parade was appropriate for the Winter season. Forgive me but dogs do it all the time. Anyway, be of good cheer! You can have a happy holiday season this year because you deserve it! So, here’s a few symptoms of holiday blues you may be feeling and some simple, quick and inexpensive ways to bring in the sunshine: 1. Feeling lonely. Volunteer. Visit an animal shelter, home for the elderly, soup kitchen or church group. 2. Grieving a lost loved one. Open up a picture album. Cry a little, laugh a lot and call a close friend or family member to share your feelings. Make a special ornament in their memory to hang from the tree so they can be a part of the celebration. 3. Not enough cash. Think thoughtful instead of expensive. Buy a cute, durable plant. Cut pieces of it off and place in tiny, cheap vases with a cute “lost and found” card attached. It will outlast the holidays for years to come and no one could forget it or you, hopefully. (There’s some bad plant keepers out there. They’d kill an artificial tree but it’s the thought). Give away items you may not need anymore but are in good condition and valuable to someone else. (i.e. the sweater your little sister adores; the coat, shoes, pair of jeans or perfume your friend‘s been eyeing that you hardly wear; that cute bracelet that doesn’t match anything; the earrings you have not taken out of the box; that mug that’s taking up too much space (add a box of tea or cocoa, cute spoon and a note). Sentimental gifts are the best. 4. Homesick. Instead of buying gifts, buy yourself a ticket home. Your presence is the present. Go home. 5. Depressed. Call your counselor, Pastor, minister, a close friend or family member to let them know how you feel. Download an inspirational video, or blog, or bible app. Turn on some Christmas or Gospel music.
