The fact that a blood red lunar eclipse is happening only a week after they opened that black sarcophagus in Egypt is kinda unsettling.

How to Start a Journal for Cheapos (update)
It’s been a while since the other How to Start a Journal for Cheapos and I thought I’d update everyone!
If you haven’t already, you can read my other post (here) where I let you know some of the journaling/planning alternatives that can save you a couple bucks (or tens) mainly for Canadians because the CAD still sucks. I am still using the same stationary that I’ve written in the last post - nothing has really changed, except for the planner, because new year!
First off, I hope everyone’s year has been going well so far. I graduated this year, which was exciting! But now that school is over, I have to start adulting, and that is quite hard.
So let use start with what I’ve been using! [WARNING: LONG POST]
The Happy Planner
OK, so I know I said in the last post that the Happy Planner, Moleskine, Leuchtturm1917 etc. are way too expensive. Well, I kind of (?) take that back. In Toronto specifically, those kinds of journals/planners are quite expensive. But I caved and bought a Happy Planner and was thiiiiiiiiiiiiiis close to buying a Moleskine (stopped myself just in time phew!). Even though I am cheap, I still cave into aesthetically pleasing things ie the Happy Planner. I bought a Mini Happy Planner, because I thought the Classic was a bit too overwhelming. You have SO much space to cover and especially when you’re a beginner to planning/journaling you don’t really know what to do with the extra space. I bought it in December of last year when it was 60% off, if I can remember correctly. Original retail price of the mini Happy Planner was ~$30 CAD. As you can see, there was definitely no way I was gonna buy it for that much. I bought mine for $11 + taxes. Do you see how much I saved?? That’s a steal. I know there are sales where it is BOGO free but don’t fall for that trap. I almost did because a friend wanted one too. I think it is a smarter choice to watch out for the 60% off sales on planners so you can save an additional couple dollars. I think I only saw the sale a couple times during the end of the year so, don’t miss it. Of course, there are 50% off sales if you can’t get one for that time.
Now that I have my hands on a Happy Planner, let me do a quick review. Short and simple: I don’t like it.
Surprised? Me, too. Let me explain then. Of course, it’s super pretty to look at, but there are some flaws, at least for me. I bought this one:
VERY pretty. LOVE the tabs in this book; very simple. What I don’t like about the Happy Planner and probably the whole disk bound system itself is that the edges at the rings get caught and when you close it, the edges bend, if you know what I mean. Hmm.. let me explain it a little more. There’s like a 1cm distance between the edge and the hole as with hole punched paper. This is different because the holes are punched right to the edge for the disc rings. That CORNER of that hole is that one that causes me problems. When close it, it sometimes gets caught on ring, or gets stuck to the page underneath and ends up with a folded corner. It was so frustrating for me because it wasn’t just one page, but multiple pages and I had to unfold the pages one by one. That’s my first complaint.
My second dislike is that it is too small for me. If you read my other post, I used the Muji planner. It is a little bigger than this one. I used it as both a journal and planner so transitioning from that to this was difficult. There is not a lot of space on this planner. You see all these amazing planners who decorate their Mini Happy Planner like they would a regular size and only have space for one entry. Or decorate it in a way where it is both pretty and practical. If you are one of these people, I applaud you. If you are like me, where you like to write long entries and don’t have small writing, I don’t recommend this. Also note that I don’t use stickers- only washi. I haven’t been able to use washi tape on this as much as I did on my previous planner.
Others
If you feel like the Happy Planner is not for you, I highly recommend the Muji planner if you have access to it. I didn’t buy it this year and I wished I did.
It is A6 size, so it is bigger but very practical. An alternative to that if ON SALE is the Moleskine. I looked on the Indigo’s webpage (April 2018 [here]) and there were a LOT of planners that are on sale ~50% off. I feel like if you were to monitor their website, you would get a good deal. It was around ~$8-20 depending on the size. I’m not too sure with the quality of their planners but the brand itself is quite popular. You would of course be losing the last 3-4 months, and that’s the only down-side Another thing I found on the website is the Webster’s 6 ringed planners.
The good thing about the ringed binders is that there are no dates on it. Right now it retails for $12.50. It is originally $50 so if you were looking to buy a Michaels Recollections ring bound planner, stop that thought and buy this!! I heard this brand is of better quality. By looking at the pen loop, I can already tell it’s better than Michael’s haha!. If I knew about this, I wouldn’t have bought the Recollections one a few years back. If I didn’t have the Recollections one, I would have bought this since I have no need for many. There are also Kate Spade ones on sale so take a look!
If you are cheaper than the $12.50, take a look at inside Dollarama! I bought one very recently! Honestly, Dollarama keeps getting better and better. The paper that came with it is VERY good quality. Super nice and thick, unlike the papers the Michael’s planners are coming with, that’s for sure. I bought A5 size but they also have a smaller size. It’s not aesthetically pleasing like the rest of the planners, but if you’re looking only for productivity at a low price of $4, then look no further! The only thing is it only comes in 4 colors and they are neon pink, neon yellow, neon green and neon blue. If you don’t care about that then take a look! I bought blue because it stood out the least haha!

OH and I also bought a Michael’s traveler’s notebook. The simple tan one. Nothing much to talk about. I am only using it as a art journal. The outside is faux leather, or something and the inside of it is black cardboard paper to hold it’s shape. Paper is very thin and ink bleeds through, that’s why I am only using it for sketching. I heard new traveler’s notebooks are out but I don’t think I plan on buying them, I’ll just browse through them on tumblr and Instagram!
If you made it through this post, congrats! Hope my review helps you in choosing the right planner. I will be purchasing the Muji 2019 planner since I really like the quality of the paper. it holds watercolor quite well. Again, there is no need to go expensive right away - you may never know if you like it or not and if you’ve found your own writing style. Just buy a cheap notebook first before heading out to buy a $30 notebook. You have all the time in the world, so be patient and find out what works for you!

How to Start a Journal for Cheapos
I’ve always wanted to write this little (life changing) tip.
I’ve been looking at journals/bullet journals/planners on tumblr, instagram and pinterest for quite a while because they’re so aesthetically pleasing! I follow like 20+ blogs because they are sooo nice to look at. The color schemes, the handwriting, the stickers, the washi tape, their clean white backgrounds - it makes everyone so jealous. BUT AIN’T NOBODY GOT TIME FOR THAT!
Respect to those who make their journals/notes and their edits so pretty because they’re honestly eye candy. But their community is so small, you know? Not everyone can post pretty pics of their notes and actually have time for other important stuff (like actually study and not take 50 pics and spend 10+ minutes on each pic to edit, in addition to liking everything from other studyblrs).
That’s why I’m gonna give you some life hacks for those who want to start a journal that’s aesthetically pleasing without having to empty your wallet to buy the exact same materials they use. Please note, this is more of a Canadian hack because the US dollar is killing us.

The Art of Ray Oranges
Ray Oranges is an illustrator based in Florence.
There is something special about Ray’s artwork: he has the ability tell a whole story with just a few well chosen details. The absence of cluttering matter, enhanced by the mastery use of long shadows and bursts of light creates an emotional response in the viewer.
Ray’s message is always strong and to the point, although never aggressive. Ray’s artwork doesn’t aim at shouting louder than its surroundings – it doesn’t have to. The skillful use of full and empty spaces within the composition, with a predominance of the latter, is open territory for the viewer to fill the space with feelings and experiences; Ray aims at creating a meaningful dialogue with the viewer rather than establishing a relationship of command.
