If Cassandra Clare were to write a book of short stories like the Bane Chronicles about another character (I’m thinking an immortal character but it could be a mortal one too) which character would you most like to read about and why ?

Easy answer, because I've thought about this a lot! What I would want would be a series of short stories about the Circle, with each one focused on a different character in a different year. I am a huge fan of the Circle era, and I've always been disappointed that we never got The Secret Treasons. However, the more I thought about it the more I felt that a cohesive series focused on them wouldn't work as well, because the action and emotional high points of their story are spread across such a long span of time. That's why I think a short story collection would work so well, because it would give each character a moment in the spotlight and dive into an interesting era in their personal story without worrying about giving all of them interesting stuff at the same time. I've in fact thought about this so much that I planned out what I think each short story would be, so here's some screenshots of my ideas (shout-out to @jaybirdscoffee letting me ramble about the Circle in his DMs even though he has not read TSC).

So yeah! If I had to pick a single focal character then I'd probably want Valentine and have a short story about each Circle member that's grounded in his perspective and his relationship with them, but I think it would be more interesting to switch POVs and go beyond Valentine's experience.

One factor of Valentine's legacy that I want to discuss is how he kind of solidified the power of a corrupt Clave. The reason that Valentine was able to gain so much influence among the young people of his generation is that they all agreed that there were problems with how the Clave ran things. Everybody knew that the Clave was out-of-touch and ineffective at actually governing, and they wanted to do something about it. Valentine used their desire to change their world for the better and channeled it into bigotry by convincing his peers that downworlders were responsible for the sorry state of the Clave.

He was wrong about what made the Clave corrupt and he was wrong about what they should do to improve Shadowhunter society, but he was right that the Clave had a lot wrong with it and needed to change. However, because the only person in recent history to challenge the power of the Clave was Valentine and because his suggestion for improvement was genocide, by the TMI era Shadowhunters are at a point where questioning the Clave is seen as equivalent to supporting Valentine.

I just think it's an interesting look at how people will stop actually listening to what's being said once they recognize that a behavior is associated with something they already have an opinion on. Saying "hey maybe the Clave is fallible" is written off as Valentine behavior, so actual positive change gets stalled for decades. Jace is pressured to act obedient to the Clave at all times, because if he said "you guys are clearly abusing your power when you lock up and blackmail random teenagers" everyone would say that he's being like Valentine, even though "the Clave has problems" wasn't the opinion that made Valentine a genocidal maniac.

The truly sick thing about Valentine is how he was still capable of, and did still, love. Like he did actually love Jocelyn, if no one else, but it was in that twisted, obsessive way that made him turn everything they loved about one another into ash and dust

Yeah… so i don’t really know what the point of me writing this was. Originally, it was for me to explore Michael’s character more in depth since I haven’t really given him as much thought as the others and I’m writing a story with him as one of the POV’s. Also so I could lore drop about Eliza. Then it was for me to get out of a writing slump, so it kind of went off the rails. I’m not sure how interesting this will be to you guys, but it’s here if you want to read it! 

The pacing is kind of terrible and the scenes end at really random parts, but I just wanted to write something, so here. TAKE IT. TAKE IT AWAY FROM ME. DO WHAT YOU WANT WITH IT I DON’T CARE JUST TAKE IT OFF MY HANDS PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEA -

Do you think when they were younger Maryse would look at Luke and Amatis and couldn't help but be overcome with jealousy, even when they were fighting because at least they had each other to fight with? And how he may have wanted to use a power like that for good instead of the circle’s destructive end goals...

If anyone was going to lead the clave, it might as well be someone who knew firsthand the damage and corruption one man can inflict on the government.
