3D progress
I uh. Kind of took a break from doing anything related to modelling (or game dev really other than market research) because I got discouraged from continuing so I’m going to start following video tutorials and see if I can’t glean anything useful from them.

After making the lose condition for snowball game I ran out of ideas to immediately implement that wouldn’t require some form of UI implementation, which is being dealt with by a friend. Additionally the lack of art assets is something I’m actively working on right now so that’s just a bottleneck. So in the mean time I made a quick mockup of a bullet hell shooter. My only problem is the bullets seem to be going either insanely fast or nowhere at all.

So it looks like Unity 5.6 has an error where newly loaded scenes will cause all the materials to poof. Latest progress video here with the game over screen (not final) and I’d give newChan a losing animation but there’s not really a direct need to right now since she’s placeholder anyway.

Here’s some 3D models I worked on today if you’re interested:
In the order that I started working on them from oldest to newest:
Princess chess piece (I got bored)
After that I tried to seriously experiment with bevel curves instead. I’ve spent more time on the Queen than any other model so far, it probably doesn’t show but there’s more bevel curves on her than the other models. I’m still learning how to balance proportionality so it’s not as good as it could have been. The plan is to cycle through the chess pieces and then go onto another theme of objects and then come back to chess pieces in the future after having learned a thing or two.

Progress post time, first up is the new way the snowball melts, it wasn’t much of a change but it’s more visible than before that it’s melting. Before moving onto making actual characters from the start a friend suggested I make abstract shapes and stuff first which makes sense. 2 Chess pieces I made in about 10-15 minutes each bellow:

First up the rook, for next time I really should just use a visual reference instead of what I think a rook looks like.
Second is the bishop, again without visual reference:
Both were made only using one object, a cube for the rook and a UV sphere for the bishop. I learned a few new tricks from this and my goal is to make at least one model a day if I can help it. And eventually I’ll be good enough to make the player model. So for now, Unitychan stays.

Obviously I’ve got a ways to go. Today was familiarizing myself with Blender and basic “follow the outline” shenanigans. Actually making this so it doesn’t look like 100 cardboard cutouts stacked against each other would probably be the next step. Sticking with Unitychan isn’t seeming so bad right now lul.
