AQUA & THE REALM OF DARKNESS

adding up the time between her fall in birth by sleep and her rescue in kingdom hearts 3, aqua spent around twelve years in the realm of darkness. during that time, she spent it wandering the darkness and fighting off endless amounts of heartless, searching for a way out. in this time, left only with her own thoughts and anxieties, aqua was forced to confront the darker parts of herself that she tried to ignore or pretend didn't exist, which only served to pull her deeper into the darkness.

by the time fragmentary passage happens, aqua has spent ten years on the dark realm, and her heart is exhausted, more vulnerable to the darkness than she ever had been. particularly in the world within, the phantoms she fights within the mirrors are manifestations of her own darkness, the darkness she so desperately tried to deny existed within her heart. they exist to drag her further down, and they do, if only because she fears what they symbolize for her, what they represent within her. she views them as the weakness in her heart because she views having darkness as a weakness, and in a way believes herself above it due to her title as master.

after the destiny islands are restored and aqua falls into the depths, she arrives at the dark meridian, shores that lead into an unfathomably dark ocean where one would be lost if their heart was not balanced. even if she was not thrown into the water by ansem and his guardian, aqua still would have drowned in its depths if she attempted to walk into the water. not once in the two years she was trapped in the depths did she ever attempt it, and i believe a part of her knew she would drown if she ever entered the water, but a larger part of her didn't want to consciously accept that her heart was unbalanced, that she had darkness within her just as terra did. only in her isolation and struggle against the darkness did she finally understand what it had been like for terra, and what she had made worse. because of the great amount of darkness in her heart that grew under her denial of it, aqua's keyblade abandoned her in the realm of light, waiting instead on the shores of destiny islands for someone else to claim it.

it was also because of this darkness that aqua drowned in the depths, the darkness within her overcoming the light and consuming her. unlike terra, aqua did fall to darkness in this way, becoming something similar to vanitas. however, unlike vanitas, the darkness in her is able to be banished, but not with light as aqua always thought. she was saved by love, the kind of love sora has for everyone around him. it's only then that aqua realizes what the fairy godmother meant, and how in her inability to understand both it and darkness, she failed terra.

not to aqua on main as my first real post, but i think it's really interesting how aqua views darkness, particularly during fragmentary passage. when talking to mickey, she says that terra will beat his darkness, as if it's really so simple what's going on with him. and when fighting the first phantom, who tells her 'only your heart is hollow enough to be a demon's', aqua's immediate response is that she'll prove the strength of her heart, which essentially called her heartless, but that's another post for another time. point being, she views darkness as just another enemy she can beat down with her keyblade, as if it's a really big unversed or another demon tide. she believes if terra tries hard enough, the darkness in his heart will simply vanish, which is a bit hypocritical of her seeing as though she fully believed she had no darkness in her when the phantom aqua fights directly prove otherwise. i think the way she views darkness is truly very reminiscent of eraqus' teachings and highly speak to the impact he and his views had on her. i don't think a lot of the ways in which aqua hurts people are entirely her fault, but she doesn't make any particular effort to break the cycle of it until after kingdom hearts 3. hurt people hurt people, and aqua, whether she necessarily realizes it or not, has been hurt a lot, particularly by eraqus just as ventus and terra were, but because she can't realize that, she reflects those hurtful teachings.
