Far Eastern Curlew  Candlesmoke on Arches Paper, 38.5 x 28.5cm

The Far Eastern Curlew (Numenius madagascariensis) is one of Australia’s 16 critically endangered bird species. It’s a shorebird with striking patterns and a great face. I made this piece by brushing a candle against a page through hand cut paper stencils and I’m so pleased with how it turned out.

This is part of a series of endangered birds in Australia I’m working on. I just want to make gentle, round compositions of these lovely things to feel like they can be held and treasured.

I reworked a couple of older pieces to enter into a Wacom Instagram competition a week or so ago. Still love me some nonsense mechanical bits and bones.

The first stencil tests for a series involving smoke and native Australian birds in snug round compositions. I’m still working out logistics and I think the next step will be trying positive space stencils rather than cutting the light parts, to get a little more nuance in the tones and less rubbing away of the smoke residue. But these are really exciting!

I'm immersing myself back into illustration work again. Right now I'm doing a lot of scribbling to get my head in the right place for all sorts of exciting projects that are on the way.

When I sat down to procrastinate this afternoon I didn't really intend to paint hummingbirds drowning in honey but we'll just go with it, shall we.

I always say I'm going to post more and then get caught up in school, and with starting Honours I imagine it'll happen even more readily. But I still have ambitions to do a lot of illustration this year so here's a scratching from this morning.
