My Favourite Aran Jumper
1. Describe this piece of knitwear?
A very large, cream Aran style jumper with honeycomb and figure of eight style patterning.
2. What do you love about this piece?
I bought this to wear as a dress, but it is really a shade too short to get away with. Instead it has become reliably one of the most useful and practical items in my wardrobe. It’s easier to throw into a bag than a coat it’s great for camping trips, beach days, festivals and a general cover up at home. I love mixing proportions and the oversized nature emphasises how I choose to wear it, it looks great with rolled sleeves and the neck is really sloppy and wide.
3. Do you take the time to hand wash? Dry flat?
I always hand wash and I enjoy making the effort, but not very often as it absorbs so much water and becomes so heavy it’s difficult to find a place to dry it.
4. Can you remember where you bought it and the price you paid?
A vintage store in Brighton originally called Kate & Aud (now All About Aud https://www.allaboutaud.co.uk ), I used to work in the same street so I have affectionate memories of the community there and the ladies that ran the shop. It cost £35, which I could barely afford at that time but I was completing my knitwear degree and considered it research!
5. Is there a care label?
There is no label, and it is hand knitted so I imagine it was made by a Scottish woman for her husband (Aud had lots of secret spots in the north where she sourced vintage knits). This jumper is massive, so I’m always mindful of the time it must have taken to make which makes it feel special to wear.
6. Are you concerned with ethical production standards when you shop?
Increasingly so. Recently I watched documentary The True Cost which highlighted the global impact of the fashion we choose to consume. I’m interested in brands which are transparent about their production processes. https://truecostmovie.com
7. Hand knit or Machine Knit?
I love hand knits, they are always unique and I enjoy sensing the makers hand in the final product.
