[Greatest Hope] Sterling smiling at his wife, holding their newborn daughter. The toddler running up to him as he walks through the door. Her first day of school. His teenager rolling her eyes at him as he tells a lame joke. Her as an adult coming to visit for dinner with he and his wife. [Basically he wants her to grow up safe and happy]

It was the best way to see if the man was trustworthy, and he'd offered her his hand so really he should have been prepared given he' probably knew she could do something when she came into contact with people even if he didn't know what. So there's a bright flash from her hand as she takes his to shake.

Then she's standing there, watching him with what had to be his family, and she realized maybe she wasn't prepared for this. It was nice. He clearly loved his kid, but she couldn't help but think of Greg and his hope to be part of her and her mother's family as it played out. He'd died trying to reach it. A bitter part of her wondered if Agent Sterling would meet the same fate, as part of SHIELD he'd surely dig into things that should be left alone.

When it was over she took a step back and let go of his hand without really thinking, still trying to push the thoughts of Greg down. "You should stay safe Agent," she said, doing her best to hide how shaken she was.

Well that was reassuring at east, though her daggers could do more than just stab she was pretty sure that was the only thing to actively worry about when letting someone else hold them. “Yep,” she popped the p, “born and raised there, though I don’t really sound like it.” She could if she wanted to but she’d never naturally had a heavy accent since neither of her parents nor any of the other people they hung around with when she was younger had

Sometimes I just think about how few people in Marvel use the Lightforce, like it’s the Darkforce’s counterpart but far more people use the Darkforce. Which makes sense given it’s derived from your lifeforce and while everyone produces it Tandy produces far more of it and both too much and too little are bad for someone.

Tandy sighed. She didn’t like the idea of dealing with that particular sicko, but morally she couldn’t just leave this be. “I haven’t heard of him switching hosts,” which didn’t mean he hadn’t but it felt like something that should have been noticeable if it happened. Brutal murders rarely went entirely unnoticed and if someone new had Carnage they’d probably start off with a bang. Then again if it had happened while she and Ty were focused on something they might just have missed the memo. “You know Spidey, working with you always makes me appreciate that me and Cloak mostly handle ordinary street crimes.”

She studied the scene, holding one of her namesake daggers in her hand as a light source. “It could be another serial killer either just got started or came in from out of town,” which was honestly preferable given normal serial killers usually weren’t too much of a recurring problem after you captured them. Not that any situation was really good where this was concerned. “We should check for any similarities or connections between the victims.”

Tandy groaned, coming to the conclusion at the same time as him. Hunting down serial killers wasn't fun, not that any of their work was fun, there was always a lingering sense of needing to hurry because one more minute could be all the next victim had.

"Great, the M.O. match any of the ones you've dealt with before Spidey?" He'd know better than her, while they certainly weren't opposed to taking down anyone who deserved her and Ty didn't really deal with serial killers that often.

“Among other things.” Sterling sighed. “I apologize… for not seeing this earlier. We never imagined Roxxon was hiding this big of a secret.” Accidentally giving children super powers, drilling for ancient energy, corporate espionage, assassinations. Once they started digging it was an avalanche of horrifying information. The fact that two young adults had to handle the whole thing on their own was embarrassing to say the least. 

“The Louisiana office will be finishing the investigation and taking the legal action necessary from here.” It wasn’t much but once they got the ball rolling it was easy for SHIELD to take it and run. There was only so much damage they could do it Roxxon from the outside with vigilante justice. Picking it apart legally and from a business standpoint, SHIELD could devastate them and make sure they never pulled anything like this again. Not everyone involved in this was caught but they would be. Everyone who had a hand in this will be held responsible. 

“What we have for you, Ms. Bowen, is… support. For you and Mr. Johnson. To continue your works with a little more… accessibility to help if needed. Instead of just doing vigilante work you could work with SHIELD. Call us if you need backup. Report in your findings. Perhaps if we have need of your specific skills we could compensate you for your troubles. We work with the Avengers from time to time. We want to expand our efforts and if you’re going to continue to use your abilities to help people we would like to make sure you are taken care of.”

He didn’t want to make it sound like a recruitment. Tandy had been burned by big organization and she rightfully had trust issues for what she had been through. If they were going to keep operating the way they were they needed help. They were still young and starting out. He didn’t even know half of what they had been through.

“Yeah, well, what matters is they failed and actually got blamed for it,” it would have been Mina who’d taken the blame if they picked another fall guy. She’d worked on the pipes, and was related to the only survivor of the explosion at the plant, really she was just set up to be the perfect scapegoat. Just like her father only Mina actually wouldn’t deserve it.

“And why would SHIELD support us? Roxxon was an accident, as I’m sure you know I had personal reasons to look into them, most of what we do isn’t exactly on your guys’ level. We aren’t the Avengers. The sort of the wasps nests we poke at are typically just ones the police should deal with but actively ignore, if it happens to lead to more then we stop it but we don’t go into it expecting that.”

Even when it did a lot of what they did ended up with them dealing with stuff SHIELD wouldn’t be able to help with, which shouldn’t be too surprising with the natures of their powers. When they did need back up they had O’Reilly who was willing enough to help them if they asked and they had no qualms making friends on the job even if she had a habit of looking at their hopes to make calls on if they should trust them.

“We aren’t assassins Agent Sterling,” because what else would SHIELD want with a dynamic duo with their skills. It was an obvious assumption that they’d make good assassins, even if they weren’t aware of her history of tricking people. Ty could get anywhere and she always had a knife. “I’m not going to lie and say we’re entirely opposed to murder as a solution if it needs to be done but we aren’t going to kill people just because you guys want them dead.”

What is the point of regression? Why watch our hero go through any of this? Because if a hero is going to be an actual hero, they have to be born again from nothing.
