my apologies, i think that's just a case of my wording being bad -- i certainly didn't intend to come off as condescending, more a case of me getting overexcited about stuff, but i'm sorry that i came off that way!
i'll admit to having mostly done self-contained discordance research so i probably did miss the more literal connections to the black plague, i think i ended up reading it as a reference to the really old FBG Rat Sending Simulator thing instead (it's the Discordance, so it's probably both)

[raises hand] there's technically three incorrect ones -- the plague rats are a metaphor that goes awry into literalism, as all Discordance-related metaphors tend to do. The rats are neither explicitly plague nor even potentially rats at all; it's just a case of the snippet on the wiki being extraordinarily misleading.

okay controversial take. fallen london and the expanded setting is like the opposite of homestuck lore. homestuck is like a frog boiling in water, where if you read along, all the wild twists make perfect sense in the order you're exposed to it. it's only if you approach it from a larger perspective (like trying to explain it to a newcomer) that it comes across batshit.
fallen london never stops having those moments even if you have been here the whole time and consumed the entire wiki and three games worth of lore. sometimes you've been here for years and still get sucker punched by "what do you mean, the gods' true foe is eye-eating spiders". it never stops.

normally not the kind to saltpost in maintag but why is un-adding acquaintances locked behind email verification. the person that hasn't logged on in four years is not going to suddenly verify their email so i'm pretty much only able to drop people from my contacts list if they're actively playing the game?
my contacts are full of people taking up acquaintance slots i need to add new friends. i can't un-add those people because their emails aren't verified. they can't verify their emails because they don't log in and i potentially haven't talked to them in years.
i would like to unfriend the dead people, please,

I don't think people realize that critiquing the media you enjoy is fun too.

fwiw anise HATES being treated like they're an extra special little guy just because they know how to do a little of Basically Anything and know Basically Everyone. this is not a contradiction it is actually just what they're like -- they enjoy networking because it means talking to new people, not because it gains them more power or w/e
that is to say: short of moving into the khanate, the tracklayer's city is pretty much the best place for them because nobody gives a shit about them being [INSERT TITLE HERE]. they are having such a great time with just doing manual labor and straight vibing

finally got to design my third FL character, Mary Hence!
she's 44, sapphic, and she came to London to avenge the murder of her lover. on the Surface she was a paleontologist and a campaigner for women's suffrage
she is a very no-nonsense lady, and a type that is willing to commit an arson/blow up a building/murder or die herself for a cause

I don't know how widespread it actually is, but I've noticed a trend of BaL PCs either being Monster-hunters or Licentiates

Because there are so many different ways to contribute to running a city other than physical labor!

tbh it's a standpoint i see popping up whenever flondon does a You Have To Die in a plotline or similar and every time i just sit there and nod and aggressively think pretty much exactly that. you can't win them all. not winning them all is cool actually. having stakes that will guarantee things happen to you even if you follow your plotline to a wiki-perfect optimized run are cool actually.
i think ESs have more opportunity to play around with these ideas, but unfortunately like half the time the ones that do inexplicably get mired in some Weird Shit along the way, which sucks (this is about the Ending Racist Colonialism With Fashion story)
also to some extent, to elaborate on the last point -- not only is horror nothing without stakes, but a lot of people are interested in playing horror games specifically to see what happens when they screw up. seeing gory death animations, willingly choosing to read the paragraph about squishing gross bugs, finding out about characters from bad endings; it's part of the appeal!
...unfortunately if our sample size is anything to go by, the people who get mad if your gamecharacter experiences Any mechanical consequence you don't think your character would personally have to experience are. about as vocal as people who think the Mr Cards ending of HD needs more tie-ins actually,
I think the fallen london PC should loose, badly, sometime soon. I think that would do well narratively.
