Indie Game Spotlight: Frogsong (@brodnork​)

This week’s Indie Game Spotlight is all about Frogsong, a story-driven adventure game about a tiny frog trying to prove their worth. It has a heartfelt story and lots of fun characters to talk to on your journey.

We spoke with Brandon Braun, the creator of Frogsong, who handles most of the development—the art, most of the programming, the story, the level design…it’s busy work!

Frogsong looks like it has a lot of different animal friends. What kind of animals can we expect to meet in the land of Salia?

The only sapient creatures in Salia are frogs and toads, but Chorus will encounter lots of different animals, with most of the enemies being insects. You’ll also run into snails, snakes, bats, and all sorts of mysterious creatures!

How does Frogsong address themes of hope, identity, and what it means to be important?

The story of Frogsong starts off with Chorus moving to a new town to start a better life. Being much smaller than the other warriors, Chorus struggles to get anyone to take them seriously. The story is centered around Chorus fighting to be accepted for who they really are and distancing themself from their old identity. Chorus spends most of the game trying to prove they’re important, too, despite their small size. The story takes from a lot of very personal life experiences that I think make the game heartfelt and authentic. I’m hoping it resonates with a lot of people.

Have you learned any interesting frog facts while working on the game?

Tons! I’m a huge fan of frogs already, so I had a lot of fun putting in lots of research for the game. Did you know that there’s an extinct species of frog that raised its tadpoles in its own mouth? Or that frogs use their eyeballs to push food down their throat? Or a species of frog that breaks its own toes when threatened and uses its own broken bones as claws? Frogs are super weird.

What do you hope players will take away from your game?

I want players to feel important, no matter what disadvantages they may have or what they’ve achieved. You don’t have to do amazing things to matter. That’s what the game’s tagline—“It’s okay to be small”—means to me.

Mare is an Adventure/horror game created in RPG Maker VX ACE. The game follows Naomi, who awakens to find that they cannot remember their name, memories, and where they are. All they know is they can hear a lone voice calling to them, “Naomi, come find me.“

The game is an RPG which will feature turn based fighting, along with side quests and puzzles. The game also features original art, graphics, sprites and music.

The year is 1821. Nikanor finds himself at the bottom of a cliff and no memory of how he ended up there. Also his mother is nowhere to be seen and his house is not quite how he remembers it. Confused and determined to be reunited with his disappeared mother, Nikanor is forced to venture through the ethereal dreamscapes inside his house. 

Will things ever go back to how they used to be?

Alright, the final demo is here. Instead of the same demo with bug fixes or new portraits, I’ve extended it with more content to make it more interesting. More maps, more puzzles and more Amarant being annoying!

Been spending the last week adding a little bit more gameplay and polish to Fairy House before posting the download link by this weekend. My favorite thing I’ve implemented post-game-jam is these water shaders and sound effects!

I really wanted to make sure the game is at least somewhat good before posting it because I realized this week that I haven’t actually published any of my games to the public before!

Game jam games are usually not very polished, frustrating, glitchy, unintuitive, etc. So I figured I might as well make it a bit more painless to play through before letting the general public play it.

Don’t get me wrong though, this is still a game jam game; it’s super short (less than 15 minutes long), doesn’t fully take advantage of all of its mechanics, and has some gameplay and structural problems that would take a full redesign to make up to my standards.

But I think it’s still a pleasant little game with nice art and an entertaining little story.

“Aria is a bookworm who loves adventure stories and always spends her free time in the library. One day she falls asleep while reading a book and when she wakes up the library is closed. Believing that they forgot to wake her up, she tries to find a way out… In that moment she becomes the protagonist of her own story.”

The game contains jumpscares and blood. Proceed with caution.

NEW FEATURES

-Added 2 new endings: Good Ending and Bad Ending 2. -The original Bad Ending has been expanded with more content. Now it’s also called Perfect Ending. -A Bonus Room has been added. -A new character, Wendy, has been added. -5 new tracks have been added, that will be used in the new endings. -There’re new scenes in the game. -There’re 4 new CGs. -Horror section has been updated with some new things, making it a bit scarier. -Adjusted the darkness of most of the maps, specially the corners, making the exploration easier. -Updated some of the maps. This week, I’m a lot of progress with coding the RPG event system in the game. Events can get called at refresh points, like the start of a day, on a given minute on the game clock, or on entering a new area.

These events will run things like spawning various items, wild life, and NPCs on their routines.

So if you guys don’t know about Epaulette Sharks, you better watch this now! This juvenile is the cutest little sea puppy and he’s always happy to greet us when we come up to the glass.

Also, they walk along the sand using their fins which is amazing to watch.
