why does nobody ever talk about angel and spike fighting over the shanshu prophecy?
when spike points out that angel views his soul as a curse, as punishment, as being forced to live with the guilt of everything he's done, whereas spike fought for his soul. nearly died for it. the demon with no soul still wanted to do the right thing, to be a good man, so desperately he would destroy himself for the chance.
and then angel says something VERY interesting to spike. spike says he thinks angel hates him because he's a living reminder of his evil. "cause every time you look at me, you see every dirty little thing i've done. all the lives i've taken. because of you. drusilla sired me, but you made me a monster."
and angel, the man who, without his soul, tortures and kills people sadistically for fun and feasting, the man who insists he is not angelus, says, "i didn’t make you, spike. i just opened up the door and let the real you out."
SUCH an interesting thing to say, angel! let's talk about this. no, please—go on. explain how you are better than spike in any way. i'm fascinated. i'd love to hear how you and angelus are different people but the demon who possessed william the poet is somehow the same as the man.
you can't have it both ways, you horrifically catholic man. you aren't a better person just because you've suffered more.

imagine if the BtVS writers had just...let us ever be mad at Riley.
For writers who so clearly understood an audience's desire to root for an underdog, they never seemed to understand that they needed to give us an outlet for our frustration with Riley in order to "forgive" him.
Of all the worst problems with how Riley is written as a character, these are two moments in As You Were that always boil it down for me.
Tumblr media
After having a year to reflect on everything that DIDN'T work in Into the Woods, apparently the writers' takeaway was that BUFFY needed to apologize. Chasing a helicopter wasn't QUITE humbling enough, I guess. She needs to say sorry to the guy who left her and got married within a year...because clearly SHE was the only one not fully committed to their relationship. Sure.
He, otoh? Has nothing to apologize for.
Now, bear in mind, at this point, we in the audience have watched Buffy lose her mom, sacrifice her own life, struggle through a legit resurrection, but the writers still want us to care that it hurt Riley's feelings that Buffy cried more over Angel than him.
AYW should've been Riley's redemption. He should've shown up apologetic, sheepish, and frankly, if we were meant to get on his side, a little loser-ish. But the writers seemed incapable of getting that you can't make us like a character by just repeatedly telling us he's faultless. They already let him leave once, with Xander lecturing Buffy and us that we had failed to appreciate the best guy we were ever going to have a shot with. But no one was buying. So how to drive it home this time? Have him show up literally "intense, fit, and more handsome than ever", now with new scar! Just like that other guy we know you're into!
Tumblr media
Buffy won't just run after him this time. She'll swoon, she'll pine, she'll be filled with jealousy. She'll be a loser in a bad outfit. She'll smell. She'll be less effective and knowledgeable than the super couple. She'll be caught in a humiliating, intimate situation. And how shocking that this somehow still did not make Riley a fan favorite. Who ever could've predicted? Other than everyone who had already seen it not work in ITW, that is.

#bangel s1 i don't mind bc we're in the teen romance genre bangel s2 i love bc it's a well executed (imo) metaphor for abuse#bangel s3 tries to go back to teen romance after the abuse metaphor and it doesn't fucking work!!#god. the idea of buffy intentionally trying to evoke a pre-traumatised version of herself to sell this relationship to her loved ones..#giles#buffy via @faithlesbian
watching buffy look giles in the eye and going "yes i'm gonna go see angel :) we're just friends though!" is giving me psychic damage. like. you can see it causes giles physical pain to say angel's name. you can see how VISIBLY MISERABLE he is the entire scene???? 1) how did i remember none of this, and 2) the way he is looking at buffy the whole time as she gives him this determined, hard version of her bubbly smiley teen-girl-y ness is making me wanna claw at the walls. there is this very deliberate difference in both of them and the roles they inhabit. she is stepping into pre-angelus buffy and trying to shield herself in it and pretend the status quo was not irrevocably shattered, and he has reached this visible point of realization that nothing (no one) matters more to her than angel, who she feels understands her in a way that no one else does. there's this visible disconnect between them that buffy is just not engaging with and giles is resigning himself to. somehow that is just always what's happening with them

rewatching S2 of BtVS and it really is wild how hard the narrative goes on Jenny Calendar for like...not outing herself to the demon who killed her family? Because I guess she owed it to everyone to make sure the demon whom her ancestors cursed with everlasting torment knew EXACTLY where to direct his anger, should the impulse ever strike him? But don't worry Jenny, you can atone and get back in everyone's good graces if you prioritize rescuing the demon currently on a murder spree throughout Sunnydale.
