-Gwynplaine is the son of a count, his father was executed for political reasons, and he had his mouth slit and was left stranded in a blizzard. While wandering, he met a baby girl named Dea, whose mother had frozen to death. They are taken in by Ursus, a kindly philosopher-showman, and his pet wolf, Homo.
- Gwynplaine and Dea have been together since childhood, and grew up in the same class in a difficult situation. One lost his eyes, the other had to live with a cut on his face, but even so, love still came to them gently. They gave each other the most sincere and pure feelings and were later brought together by their old father Ursus. Dea did not care about Gwynplaine's appearance, and Gwynplaine did not care about having to take care of a blind person like Dea.
