Chapter 9: Eldrene is totally anticipating Egwene when Gawyn dies. It‘s interesting to find in such a small detail, that she feels Aemon dying, that she obviously bonded him.
She even directs the One Power to the channelers, the same Egwene does at the end.
Moiraine spinning her staff = spinning of the Wheel.

More wild speculation/possibilities:
„I understand how you feel, Rand,” she said, and he had the uncomfortable feeling that she really did. “Think no more of it.” Her mouth tightened, and she shook her head.“
„Rand shifted uneasily, wishing she would not look at him like that, as if her eyes could pierce his brain and read what lay in every corner of it. “What would they want with us? We’re just farmers, shepherds.“
„That . . . that’s impossible.” Rand stumbled to the window and stared out at the village, at the people working among the ruins. “I don’t care what’s happened, that is just impossible.” Something on the Green caught his eye. He stared, then realized it was the blackened stump of the Spring Pole. A fine Bel Tine, with a peddler, and a gleeman, and strangers. He shivered, and shook his head violently. “No. No, I’m a shepherd. The Dark One can’t be interested in me.“
„A vision danced in his head, of Emond’s Field all in ashes. All the farms burned. And Watch Hill, and Deven Ride, and Taren Ferry. All ashes and blood. “No,” he said, and felt a wrenching inside as if he had lost his grip on something. “That’s why I have to leave, isn’t it? The Trollocs won’t come back if I am not here.” A last trace of obstinacy made him add, “If they really are after me.”Moiraine’s eyebrows raised as if she were surprised that he was not convinced,“
Well, maybe it‘s not so wild as I thought. Moiraine in the end of EotW says through the coin Rand, Mat, Perrin (and Ewin) carry, she was able to compel the boys. She noted though that Rand resisted.
In this scene, Moiraine tries to convince Rand to leave the Two Rivers. And at first, he refuses to believe. Even Lan is agitated in this situation - as lets out a sigh of relief when Rand says he‘d go along. So Rand looks out the window while being in disbelief about what Moiraine told him.
He then shivers and „shakes his head“. Rand later on in the novels frequently shakes his head whenever he tries to „clear his head“ = when he tries to get rid of the DO‘s taint, which is - as Nynaeve later notices - just the DO compelling someone with the True Power.
So towards intrusive thoughts he reacts by shaking his head. And Rand being stubborn still refuses to believe Moiraine.
Then he sees a vision - which may or may not be a creation of his own - of Emond‘s Field destroyed which finally leads him to „let go“ of his home and says he‘s go along with them. So Moiraine has what she wanted. Still, Rand retorts by saying that he still isn‘t sure.
And Moiraine‘s reaction is one of surprise. Which would fit to what she said - that Rand not doing what she compelled him to do told her something.

Chapter 9: Everyone knows…
1.) Bran knows that Rand comes from outside the village. Ewin tells Rand and Mat that Moiraine goes around asking questions about who is who and how long they have lived where they live. And Tam and Rand are the only two persons who have been outside the Two Rivers. It is next to impossible that Bran al‘Vere doesnt know about Moiraine‘s questioning and realizes she may become interested in Rand - even if she would only consider him a possibility.
Thom is hinted at to have some very vague idea what Moiraine is doing in the Two Rivers. Mr. „I play the Game of Houses perfectly“ initiates the conversation like this when Rand says he‘s do anything for Tam:
„I was just wondering,” Thom said, tamping his long-stemmed pipe with his thumb, “if the Mayor knew who scrawled the Dragon’s Fang on his door.” He peered into the bowl, then looked at Tam and replaced the unlit pipe between his teeth with a sigh.
We all know - because he later explains - that he has a goal in mind when he says this: He wants Rand to go to Moiraine. But - as he is somewhat vaguely aware of what Moiraine is looking for - he does so reluctantly.
“(…) Rand gave him a disgusted look and turned away to stare into the fire. (…) Bran al’Vere’s mouth tightened as he looked at Rand’s back, and the glare he directed at the gleeman would have given a bear pause, but Thom just waited expectantly as if he had not noticed it.“
At first I thought Bran glared at Thom out of pity for Rand and Tam - because Thom appears to not care at all about Tam dying. But apart from the fact that Bran himself would not respond to Rand after Rand asked him what to do and instead tried to avoid Rands eyes, he surely would not look at Thom with THAT much disgust. - it wouldnt be justified and Thom also just brought it up after Rand urged him to speak up. So Bran looks at Rand - mouth tightens - then glares at Thom for indirectly bringing up Aes Sedai - and that either hints at the fact that Bran has some idea that Rand should not get involved with Moiraine or that he did not want to mention Aes Sedai generally.
„Aes Sedai can heal, Rand. Burn me, lad, you’ve heard the stories. They can cure where medicines fail. Gleeman, you should have remembered that better than I. Gleemen’s tales are full of Aes Sedai. Why didn’t you speak up, instead of letting me flail around?”“I’m a stranger here,” Thom said, looking longingly at his unlit pipe, “and Goodman Coplin isn’t the only one who wants nothing to do with Aes Sedai. Best the idea came from you.“
Is that enough of a reason for Thom not to speak up? Or is this related to Thom and Moiraine and Thom only bringing Moiraine up very reluctantly as it later says:
„Nobody wants to get involved with Aes Sedai, lad,” the Mayor said slowly. “It is the only chance I can see, but it’s still no small decision. I cannot make it for you, but I have seen nothing but good from Mistress Moiraine . . . Moiraine Sedai, I should call her, I suppose. Sometimes”—he gave a meaningful look at Tam—“you have to take a chance, even if it’s a poor one.”
“Some of the stories are exaggerated, in a way,” Thom added, as if the words were being dragged from him. “Some of them. Besides, boy, what choice do you have?“
Thom is giving arguments for Rand to go to the Aes Sedai, but as it shows - he does so very reluctantly. And Bran is just as careful. To me it sounds that both dont want to suggest Rand going to Moiraine, with Thom thinking it is more the mayor‘s duty than his to do so.
Bran knows Rand is not from the Two Rivers and Moiraine is looking for someone who isnt from the Two Rivers OR he generally doesnt want to bring Aes Sedai into it, Thom knows Moiraine is looking for someone, and he suspects Rand isnt from the Two Rivers just by looking at him („What does Rand being as tall as he is have to do with anything?“). They both have some idea that Rand asking for help will have consequences. Rand is the only one completely clueless here.
2.) Later with Moiraine and Lan:
We are in a situation where Moiraine and Lan are looking for the Dragon Reborn - following clues that led to Tam. Rand looks like an Aielman and he resists Moiraine‘s slight compulsion somewhat when they first meet. After this Lan closes in on Moiraine to talk to her (which by itself of course doesnt mean anything).
Lan knows what they are looking for and he also knows that Moiraine hopes to find the Dragon Reborn in the Two Rivers.
She even hopes to have found him in Rand, or she would not ask this question about his dreams.
„There’s nothing wrong with my. . . . It’s my father. (…) The Wisdom won’t help. She says she can’t. But the stories—” (…). He looked at the Warder, but Lan appeared more interested in the dead Trolloc than in anything Rand might say. (…) “I . . . ah . . . it’s said Aes Sedai can heal. If you can help him . . . anything you can do for him . . . Whatever the cost. . . . I mean. . . .” He took a deep breath and finished up in a rush. “I’ll pay any price in my power if you help him. Anything.“
And exactly how likely is that that Lan isnt interested? There is some person who may be the DR in front of you, the person you have been searching for forever, and he is babbling about doing anything in exchange for her help. And he just looks away and at the Trollocs? My understanding of it is that Lan also doesnt feel well in this situation.
And there may even be some undertones in what Lan says a bit later.
„Death comes sooner or later to everyone,” the Warder said grimly, “unless they serve the Dark One, and only fools are willing to pay that price.” Moiraine made a clucking sound. “Do not be so gloomy, Lan. We have some reason to celebrate. A small one, but a reason.”

I haven‘t yet read the prequel completely, but…
„For a moment Thom looked at Moiraine sideways, his face and body still except for making the balls disappear into his capacious coat sleeves. Then he bowed to her, holding his cloak wide. “Your pardon, but you are surely not from this district?“
„Lady!” Ewin hissed fiercely. “The Lady Moiraine.” Thom blinked, then bowed again, more deeply. “Your pardon again . . . ah, Lady. I meant no disrespect.”Moiraine made a small waving-away gesture. “None was perceived, Master Bard. And my name is simply Moiraine. I am indeed a stranger here, a traveler like yourself, far from home and alone. The world can be a dangerous place when one is a stranger.” “The Lady Moiraine collects stories,” Ewin put in. “Stories about things that happened in the Two Rivers. Though I don’t know what ever happened here to make a story of.” “I trust you will like my stories, as well . . . Moiraine.” Thom watched her with obvious wariness. He looked not best pleased to find her there. Suddenly Rand wondered what sort of entertainment a lady like her might be offered in a city like Baerlon, or Caemlyn. Surely it could not be anything better than a gleeman.“That is a matter of taste, Master Bard,” Moiraine replied. “Some stories I like, and some I do not.”Thom’s bow was his deepest yet, bending his long body parallel to the ground. “I assure you, none of my stories will displease. All will please[…]“
I don‘t know exactly about the meaning of it all because I only reread it now, but I am totally convinced that Thom and Moiraine are talking about something else here. And Rand is subconsciously noticing the „vibes“.
Moraine arrived from Baerlon, didnt she? And Thom also arrived from Baerlon. And whenever Thom is somewhere, the first thing he does is collect information. He came down to Emond‘s Field in a hurry.
It is very possible he knew Moiraine before Emond‘d Field. Wild speculation: He could have missed her being Aes Sedai, trying to hook up with her before realizing what she was and what she more or less intended. That would explain his reaction towards her name - a name she usually changes.
It would - even though I know how abruptly Jordan‘s love-relationships begin - explain Thom x Moiraine and especially their comment to Mat, who says he never noticed their affection for each other. They answer: He just didnt pay enough attention.
Well, as I said, this is wild speculation, but Thom knowing Moiraine and having a vague idea about what she is doing in the Two Rivers - that at least is highly probable and hinted at.

Lia: „Either Rand is a stereotypical teenage boy or she has magical charisma.“
The latter. Vision from people under compulsion:
1.) „She held herself with a grace and air of command that made him feel awkward and stumble-footed. She was barely tall enough to come up to his chest, but her presence was such that her height seemed the proper one, and he felt ungainly in his tallness.“
2.) „She smiled, and Rand found himself wondering if there was anything he might do for her, something that would give him an excuse to stay near her.“
Nice how Rand sees Mat as competition in this moment XD :
„Mat had a foolish grin on his face.“
3.) “But you must call me Moiraine, not lady. And what are your names?“
And of course they tell her:
„I’m Matrim Cauthon, La . . . ah . . . Moiraine“
„Rand had been wondering if he should do something of the sort, the way men did in stories, but with Mat’s example, he merely spoke his name. At least he did not stumble over his own tongue this time.Moiraine looked from him to Mat and back again. Rand thought her smile, a bare curve of the corners of her mouth, was now the sort Egwene wore when she had a secret.“
Would actually support my idea of Egwene/Moiraine both using a mild form of compulsion.
4.)„Lady . . . I mean, Moiraine?” Rand asked hesitantly as she turned away.
But then it‘s not working as it should:
„Lady . . . I mean, Moiraine?” Rand asked hesitantly as she turned away. She stopped and looked back over her shoulder, and he had to swallow before going on. “Why have you come to Emond’s Field?” Her expression was unchanged, but suddenly he wished he had not asked, though he could not have said why.
Because, Rand, she becomes suspicious here. And if she had not, she may have left you in Emond‘s field. Sleeping-self wishing this?
He rushed to explain himself, anyway. “(...) I just wondered.”Her smile did fade then, slowly, as if something had been recalled to her. For a moment she merely looked at him. “
She‘s thinking about her mission, as her answer later makes clear.

Rereading all of it now and enjoying your blog along the way- and I dont care that Im years past ;P I just put out random ideas that may or may not come together in the end.
„As a particularly strong blast tugged the cloak out of his hand, he glanced at his father over the back of the shaggy brown mare. He felt a little foolish about wanting to reassure himself that Tam was still there, but it was that kind of day.“
It still reminds me of the ending - with the DO attacking with these wind-attacks that try to „rip“ Rand „apart“. Since I believe we are inside his dream from the very beginning you could read this comment like this.
„With his thick chest and broad face, (Tam) was a pillar of reality in that morning, like a stone in the middle of a drifting dream.“
Exactly that!
„Of all things he might want to think about right then, the Mayor’s daughter was far down the list. He did not need any more confusion. For the past year she had been making him increasingly jittery whenever they were together. Worse, she did not even seem to be aware of it. No, he certainly did not want to add Egwene to his thoughts.“
Not saying I believe this, but if the beginning of the novels occurs after the ending, this could be read differently. I was reminded a bit of Verin, saying Wilders have the tendency to influence people around them, making them do what they want, before they learn to channel. So one idea I had was that Rand liking her could be related to some sort of compulsion. Again, I dont say I believe this, and in the first place, this idea might derive from the fact that I just cannot - no matter how hard I try - see anyone falling in love with one of the most annoying characters I have ever had the displeasure to get to know - Egwene, ugh.
Idea running wild now: Herid Fel said „Do not bring girl - too pretty“ - and since everything this guy said was quite meaningful, I dont believe this refers to Min. It COULD refer to Egwene.
And then I think of Lanfear, how her compulsion effects people to think of her as the most beautiful woman in the world, or of Graendal. These two certainly are „too pretty“. Thoughts running wild XD (Probably nonsense, but still fun to speculate about)

Okay, so let me get this straight:
LTT made the seals. LTT asked the women to help, but they refused, leaving him and by himself.
Now, LTT wants to break the seals HE made with HIS and his companions sacrifices
And Egwene says „no“? Really woman, make your own damn seals, if you want to be in charge of anything.
I know, of course, that since the whole world rests on the seals being intact, everyone is equally affected by Rands decision and should have a say. But wow, I wonder how Egwene can be so haughty about this when really the seals are rightfully LTT‘s…

This is so well done: the way you can tell precisely where we are in Veins of Gold by the thoughts and despair of a single farmer. The way it shows so clearly the reach of Rand’s… self? Effect? I can’t think of the right word, but it’s like how we see the wind brushing across Almen’s shirt, and now Rand’s despair brushing across his mind. Land and Dragon, and it’s all tied together.
Didnt even pay attention to this, but Lia is totally right - a repetition of the battle in the farmer :)

Huh?
Did his hatred cause that storm? It must be so. Yes.
Lia: Sorry Fain; pretty sure Rand has first claim on I am the storm.
I think Lia misunderstood the world “his“, after all:
A tempest. He liked that, though he hated the one who caused it.
Quoting the line before:
„Blood dripped from the tip of the dagger down onto the weeds. Crimson spots to cheer him. Red below, black above. Perfect. Did his hatred cause that storm? It must be so. Yes.“
Im not gonna start about „red blood“ being associated with Rand‘s personality while black is associated with the DO‘s taint/Moridin. I also wont mention again that the prophecies say Rand (red) would sit on (above) a black horse (black) called Death/Moridin. I wont repeat that Moridin in influencing Rand‘s thoughts with Rand being in control for the longest time - up until chapter 22, when the two „sides“ finally turn (as it was announced would happen in earlier books). Not to speak of Moridin‘s colors and Rand starting to wear black instead of red coats from a certain point onwards.
It is just obivous that „red below, black above“ is referring to who is in control at that time of the gathering storm, and so the question „Did his hatred cause the storm?“ is referring to Moridin/DO/Rand. Wouldnt make sense otherwise. Not even for a madman…
Red below, black above. Red and black, red and black, so much red and black.
Yeah. Two pennants entangled that cant be pulled apart. Thoughts that come from one personality and the other, changing rapidly.
Fain can serve as a role model for „Rand-Moridin“ what it means to be neither this nor that person.

Another way to understand the dream maybe? He was making something important.
Lia: A nation? A decision? A bed to replace the one he ‘lost’ in the bushes? Tell us, Perrin.
Himself? I dont think that quite fits, as there are other pieces he pulls out from the forge later. So more like: His part in the Pattern. A nation - Manetheren. At least he was, until he made a contract with the devil Seanchan (=pieces of the DO) where he exchanged Manetheren in order to get Faile back.
Master Luhhan would be ashamed to see such shoddy work. Perrin needed to discover what he was making soon, before his master returned.“
We could also read it like this: Perrin betrayed the Pattern itself and he tried to get back „on track“ afterwards. The work until now is shoddy. He failed. And now he does not have much time left until Rand needs him on Dragonmount and .. Perrin has to understand his role before - understand the pieces of the larger Pattern.
„Perrin grabbed the lump of unshaped iron with his tongs, thrusting it down on the anvil. It flared to life with heat. Everything is still wrong. Perrin smashed his hammer down. It should all be better now! But it isn’t. It seems worse somehow.“
I dont think this refers to Failes and his relationship, but the general „wrongness“ that is mentioned starting a few books earlier, after the DO‘s chaos spread and causes the Pattern to partly unravel. Perrin role was supposed to be another one, and his story ended suddenly, the left hand „strayed“ and so was cut off. Perrin made everything worse by straying from the path he was supposed to follow (raising Manetheren), and now he has to rediscover what role he has to play in order to get the Pattern back on track.
„He stepped over and pulled out another figurine. This one was in the shape of Tod al’Caar. As it cooled, Perrin found that the face wasn’t distorted like Aram’s, though the lower half of the figurine was unformed, still a block of metal.“
Makes sense, if we consider that Perrin was supposed to „shape“ the Two Rivers into something else.
But figurines like this wouldn’t be forged; they’d be cast. “What does it mean?”
That you messed up, Perrin. The way you forged these men is wrong. They dont serve the Pattern‘s purpose anymore and thus arent needed - at least not in the way they were inititally intended to play their role in the Pattern.
„The figurines seemed accusing. Around them lay the broken shards of Aram. Those pieces seemed to be growing larger. The shattered hands began working, clawing on the ground. The shards all became little hands, climbing toward Perrin, reaching for him.“
Of course they seem accusing. Perrin gave up on the world for Faile when he made his crossroads-decision. And now he has to somehow make it right again, but its not so easy. So Perrin is actually attacked by hands…Quelle surprise.
And then a voice laughs…Whoever could that be?…

Perrin‘s influence? Lia didnt know yet what is described later.
Rand‘s personality returns in the course of the story when certain people look at him or call his name and he is seen as himself. After he almost destroyed the borderlanders, Rand said he would soon need Perrin, and he needs him on the top of the mountain. And Perrin feels that he is needed as a witness. But what does Perrin do? He just stands there, watches Rand and says „Please Rand“. And in the waking world we get:
Why do we live again? Lews Therin asked, suddenly. His voice was crisp and distinct.
Lia Oh.
Lews Therin’s voice is distinct now because the…transition? Switch? Shift? Is…complete, in a way. At least that’s where I go with this.
I think it‘s because the madness is supressed and Rand for a moment can become more lucid to be able to „see past the clouds“.
Maybe…Lews Therin said, shockingly lucid, not a hint of madness to him. He spoke softly, reverently. Why? Could it be…Maybe it’s so that we can have a second chance.
Lia: And I love that it’s Rand who stops himself. Interrupts himself just as he’s about to erase existence, and tries to answer the question he had been shouting to the sky. It’s not someone else stepping in.
It‘s still Rand answering himself, but imo, Perrin is still needed here to make it possible for Rand to think as himself. And so, without the madness there is only pure LTT and pure Rand, and Rand as himself, yet still accepting LTT. Something like that :)

Hmmmmm…okay, my understanding is a bit different.
There was something beautiful about it. The light streaming down in a column, strong and pure. Distant, yet striking. It was like something forgotten, but somehow still familiar, shining forth from a distant memory to bring warmth again.
For me this description of „the (L)light“ we see here is far too atmospheric, too beautiful to be connected to someone committing suicide out of despair. And everyone looks at it and feels like it‘s „something forgotton“. So nononono ;P This is not: „remember the familiar Light one person used to commit suicide“? What has been forgotten, imo, is „hope“, or „THE Light“. Rand is supposed to bring salvation to a people who live in a world where darkness is literally spreading. So now finally we have „Light“ again. „It‘s here“, yay!
Lia:
There was something beautiful about it. The light streaming down in a column, strong and pure. Distant, yet striking. It was like something forgotten, but somehow still familiar, shining forth from a distant memory to bring warmth again.
OH. OKAY. OKAY THIS IS ACTUALLY AMAZING BECAUSE.
Lews Therin, creating Dragonmount in a column of light and Power, too much for any one person to hold and survive, destroying himself and tearing at the world itself. A bright light on Dragonmount as the final moments of the one who would be known afterwards as Kinslayer. A bright light on Dragonmount as the Dragon’s death, and darkest hour.
And now, it is echoed in this Age but inverted, because it’s a second chance. The same, and yet utterly different. A moment of realisation for the Dragon, and a bright light on Dragonmount, but this time the realisation is not one of horror and tragedy but of love and hope and second chances. And the light is not annihilation but sunlight, and life.
That? Is a fantastic parallel and inversion.
Of course it is ‘like something forgotten’. Of course it is ‘somehow still familiar’. Of course it shines forth ‘from a distant memory’. Because that’s what it is, and yet in this Age, it gets to be something different.

Oh come on! I wanted to see Lia writing about the „god“-allusions here.
„The Dragon Reborn walked among this people, and they did not know him.“
„Here, the world spread before him. Why have we come here? Rand thought. Because, Rand replied. Because we made this. This is where we died.“
Obviously, the answer „because we made this“ can refer to both - „the world“ and Dragonmount. But this question imo should be associated with the inner „mono-dialogue“ Rand has with himself/Moridin (probably) about the Creator. It was said that the Creator has many flowers in his garden and didnt care if one didnt grow. But then the „gardener“ in Eye of the World is shown to act differently, to care about every tiny flower. So „why have we come here? - Because we made it“. - and it‘s your responsibility to stop the world from turning into the kind of hell we have seen a glimpse of in the mountain-village Mat came through.
Then he rested his elbows on his knees and his head on his hands, staring at the diminutive statue of the man with the globe. To think.
Lia: Staring, in a way, at a representation of himself. A man made of power, holding the world.
At least, this Lia mentions. I agree, Rand is basically the access key to the Creator in this world. A small figure on the gameboard.
