Yess!!! I just got back into this!

Okay so I did some digging into Kakuriyo Bed and Breakfast for Spirits light novels to learn more about what to expect when the anime returns next year to air season 2. It's rather complicated since there is no official English translation and I don't know the whole story very well.... but on the bright side I confirmed my hopes for about the future of Aoi and Odanna's relationship.

• Aoi and Odanna's relationship makes more progress and eventually Aoi finally realizes she is in love with him and they officially get together. Also she proposes to him when Aoi declares her love.

• Odanna goes missing and later becomes a fugitive cause he's been keeping a VERY big secret.

• Odanna's real name is Setsu.

Making the drawing and video itself took a little over a month. But I had been planning out the text portions (translation, text excerpts, ideas for puzzles) of it for a little over a year (my planning document dates back to May of last year and somehow amassed 12K words..?).

I wasn't working on it continuously for a year, though; it was just an on-off project that I was lazily thinking about for a while.

It's not visible in all of his sprites, but he does indeed have a tongue piercing.

He thought if he had one there he could slip it under his old school's strict "no piercings allowed" policy by just closing his mouth every time a teacher walked by.

Some of the birthdays are specific dates with meaning, then the rest were filled in throughout the remaining months of the year in a somewhat even temporal spread.

Duke Spurling and Richard Spurling are different people, but they are brothers. Duke is (was?) a politician. Richard is a billionaire philanthropist who founded the Spurling Foundation. Duke is not officially affiliated with the Spurling Foundation, but he did receive sizable political donations from that foundation while he was still active in politics.

Duke is a first name, by the way, and not a title. Also, Duke is quite old, in the 80-something-ish age range. Basically, old enough to have been alive during the Tragedy.

I said before that I would only confirm sexualities in the story itself, but I changed my mind.

He has an almost unruly sweet tooth and will consume an entire bowl of lollipops (his favorite candy) in an hour if he doesn't watch himself.

If you see him in future art with a white stick of some sort in his mouth it's almost certainly a lollipop.

When I designed Ace from the start, I wanted him to wear heels (because he is short), but I thought that it was inaccurate for a jockey's outfit, and I didn't do it. But then later I remembered that he isn't jockeying at the moment, so it would have been fine if he wore heels. In any case I decided it'd be okay to add them back in his new design.

When it comes to jockeying, Ace wishes he was shorter (he is on the tall side for a male jockey), but for all other aspects of life he might find it bothersome to be shorter than everyone else. So he might have a tendency to wear shoes that enhance his height. Subtly of course.

Also, he has 9 siblings.

They are totally unrelated institutions. The former is a philanthropic organization, the latter is a for-profit tech company (that also seems to do a lot of other things).

It’s good to have names to refer to characters, so here are the names of some characters who have been referred to in the story (and additional information about other characters as well)

Fuyuko + Natsuko Nageishi (Arei’s older sisters, by around 2-5 years): They are identical twins, in both appearance and persona. Actually, their appearances are mirrored. The two of them are always seen together and share everything with each other. They are best friends and very close.

Ryan Rosales (J’s younger brother, by about 1-2 years): He likes playing video games, and the two of them play games often. He also loves annoying J. One of his hobbies is cross-dressing.

Elliot “Ellie” Cuevas (Charles’ older brother, by about 11-13 years): Although he has not had an appearance yet, he looks shockingly similar to how Charles looks now. His favorite food is pancakes and his favorite animal is dogs.

Felicity Giles (Arturo's younger sister, by about 3-4 years): She also has not made an appearance yet. She has low self-esteem and admires Arturo a lot.

These characters (and others) have reference sheets, but those are meant for internal use only, so maybe later I will draw reference of their designs to show you all.

He has a very weak sense of taste, and most normal foods taste bland to him. As a result, anything he cooks has an overwhelmingly strong flavor that makes it almost inedible to other people. He seems unaware of this.

I’ve been wondering what’s his backstory for a few years now and I really wanted to see it!

Just some food for thought..

I have been wondering what Kugaha’s life was like before he died and became a shinki. I remember finding it strange that Bishamonten had been so forgiving of his betrayal to her and the Ha clan. He killed her other shinki in a plot to kill her - that’s some pretty intense evildoing - and yet she just removed his name and banished him? Even the heavens found it strange (albeit because they realized his link to the ‘masks’ and wanted to get information out of him). This occurred in chapter 22: What Must Be Done.

Anyway, it all makes me wonder if Kugaha experienced something really saddening while alive for Bishamonten to be that benevolent towards him, and even ‘understanding’ of his choices. She described he was motivated to hurt her because he was ‘hurting’.

I think we can trust that she knows what she’s talking about. I mean, although he’s somewhat elusive and hard to understand for us readers, I 100% believe that Bishamonten knows him completely. She witnessed his whole life the day she named him. “I remember the day I named you…” I mean, viewing someone’s whole life and the way they die (god’s greatest secret) is probably VERY hard to forget.

It goes without saying that Bishamonten seems to sincerely take it upon herself that Kugaha behaved in the way he did. She takes responsibility and even ownership of his actions. She remembers him fondly, and she blames herself: “I am sorry I did not make much use of you.”

I think there must have been some good in Kugaha that made Bishamonten treat him so kindly, but likely that the the trauma he experienced in his past life affected his afterlife. We’ve seen this happen with Yukine and his fear of the dark, Mayu and her strong care for children (like Yukine and girl in chapter 1), Kazuma’s desire for Bishamonten (because of the girl he fell in love with and never confessed to before getting chokied). Their past lives affect their afterlife deeply.

I honestly have no clue though as to what may have happened to Kugaha when he was alive, but whatever it was made him susceptible to be used by father, desirous of love and attention, and pitiful instead of malicious in Bishamonten’s eyes.

Shinki Names. Part 1

I should probably add a disclaimer that I don’t know Japanese. I did spend a lot of time looking up all the kanji though and also consulted someone who does know some Japanese

A name is one the most important things a human can have. In ancient times, it was used to separate humans from nature, to guard them from evil spirits. Nowadays it’s more of a necessity, a primary part of one’s identity; a person without a name virtually doesn’t exist in the society.

In Noragami names, their meanings and functions are key elements of the magic universe created by Adachitoka. This two-parter is devoted to one of the name groups present in the manga – those belonging to shinki.

General rules of forming

Since shinki names are a part of Noragami’s magic system, there are certain rules for making them up. Many (if not most) of the readers of this post must already know those rules but I’ll list them just in case.

1. A shinki’s name is always (well, almost always, but we’ll get to that in Part 2) is written using a single kanji – a character that came into Japanese from Chinese. A kanji can have several meanings, one of which is chosen to be the name. The meaning’s two respective readings become two shinki names: kun-yomi, or Japanese native reading, refers to a shinki as a person while on-yomi, or Chinese sound reading, refers to their instrument name.

2. Even though shinki names are represented on their bodies by a single kanji, the kanji reading isn’t generally used as a name on its own. Another kanji is added to the kanji forming a shinki’s personal name to make yobina, which is the name a god uses when referring to their shinki in everyday life. Generally it’s a kanji that the gods use towards all of their shinki, i.e. their family/clan name. Here are examples of family names in Noragami:

音 – “ne”, Yato’s shinki’s family name. Means “sound”.

喩 – «yu», Tenjin’s shinki’s family name. Means “metaphor”.

大 – «dai», Kofuku’s shinki’s family name. Means “great”. The only prefix in this list.

麻 – «ma», Bishamon’s shinki’s former family name. Means “flax”.

巴 – «ha», Bishamon’s shinki’s current family name. See the meaning in the family names paragraph.

弥 – «mi», Ebisu’s shinki’s family name. When read as “mi” isn’t really a noun. One of the meanings is “more and more”.

云 – «un», Takemikazuchi’s shinki’s family name. Means “cloud”, “to talk”.

Known exceptions:

Noras: three out of four of Nora’s known names – Hiiro, Eyami, Mizuchi – do not include a family name (“chi” in “Mizuchi” isn’t actually a kanji for a family name, it’s part of kanji 螭’s reading). Tenjin also refused to give Kugaha the “yu” clan name when gave him the name “Saku”;

Sakura and Nana, who aren’t noras but still have no family names;

Daikoku and Daigo – their clan name is added to their instrument name, not their name as a person

3. The instrument name also isn’t used on its own: kanji “ki” 器 (“instrument”) is added to it. As seen in the manga, characters in Noragami prefer to use “name + ki” when talking about a shinki’s instrument form.
