I understand a lot of people adore Essek and are confused by The latest a Talks Episode as well as CR episode but I think a lot of you should remember that this is a dungeons and dragons game NOT a scripted TV show. You lot also should pay attention and watch past talks episodes and listen to the tidbits of what Liam said since in past episodes he describes seeing Essek through Caleb’s eyes as “Someone similar to Trent/Astrid/Wulf” as well as “Honey pot Essek” since Caleb knew how to set himself up coming from an environment in the past (10 years ago) that was highly manipulative.

Now I don’t hate Essek or whatever and don’t mind the shadowghast ship but a lot of you have a tendency to over purify Essek or simplify the issue at hand or set him on a pedestal. I also need a lot of you to understand it’s genuinely fine and okay to like a character who has done bad things without wanting the validation of them being redeemed. Did Essek do a war crime? Yes. Did he betray his people for his own curiosity? Yes. Does he feel guilt about it? It seems so. But that doesn’t erase the fact he promoted a war that’s caused so many people to die. Not only that, Essek was already doing deals like this before the Mighty Nein even met him. He is a grown man, NOT helpless.

Not only that, I know he’s a comfort character but a lot of you are really out here calling Critical Role homophobic in a serious context. Essek attempted to manipulate the M9 when he first met them, he promoted a war for his own curiosity (He has expressed regret over it but nonetheless I honestly don’t feel bad for him facing the consequences of his actions because he had it coming. Not in a “HE DESERVES IT” but he should of known better), and who else knows what other bad actions he has done. The word toxic is thrown around easily but he is a person who has done very bad things on a large scale, it’s not homophobic to address that.

I know quarantine and this pandemic has made a lot of fandoms more intense but you all need to chill the fuck out before pointing fingers and pay attention to canon in a clearer lens. Is he a cool character? Most definitely. Is he a NPC? Yes and everybody here knows that literally everyone has a complex about NPC’s; he’s their “friend” (hardly any of them trust him) and you all need to pay attention to ALL Talks and episodes because Caleb has a history of knowing what and when is the right thing to say and knowing how to persuade and manipulate people.

Also to particular Essek fans, you know who you are, fuck you all for using Essek as a Mollymauk replacement. They’re two different characters. JFC and some of y’all be looking real homophobic when it comes to Mollymauk (whose canonically genderfluid and Bisexual), hating Astrid when literally her and Caleb were in the same dangerous environment, Caleb just managed to Escape but I bet if Astrid was a male you all would be slobbering over her then. Essek is a NPC not the main character and literally why don’t you all pay attention to other NPCs that are the M9’s friend GENUINELY. It’s the pretty boy factor isnt it?
