From Lily's perspective, he is dragging this out longer than necessary. Making dramatic claims about the coolness of this map of his. Demanding a blood oath of secrecy before showing it to her. What does he think she's going to do: nab the thing off the table and run straight to Dumbledore with it?
She's half a mind to reach into his school bag herself and grab this mysterious map, but something about the way he's looking at her right now, speaking to her, as if this is some all-important secret between them, makes her pause. It strikes her that perhaps this really is important to him. Perhaps he's not just making a fuss over something for the attention it can garner him. "McGonagall likes you too, you dolt," she informs him as she leans back in her chair. The way he's tilting his head towards her is putting... treacherous thoughts... into her mind. "You and Black are her favorite students by a long shot."
Then, relenting, Lily decides to play along and leans in. Her voice is a conspiratorial whisper that matches the volume of his own. "All right, Potter. Yes. I solemnly swear I will tell absolutely no one about whatever unbelievably cool display of magical prowess you are about to show me. Happy?"
James watches her roll up her parchment, catching the challenge in her eyes. merlin, is it possible for someone to be even more beautiful when she’s being difficult?
he clears his throat to stop himself from staring before he gets caught gawking, “ ah … a ‘see it to believe it’ girl, ” he muses, lips twitching. of course she is. always skeptical, always making him work for it. he could lie, drag this out just to get her riled up — but honestly, he wants to show her. he wants her to see it.
he rubs his jaw, weighing his options. “ alright, Evans. you want proof? I'll give you proof. ” his fingers dip into his bag, brushing against the worn parchment, but he doesn’t pull it out just yet. instead, his gaze flickers back to hers, “ but first, I need something from you. ”
“ you have to promise, ” he says, his voice lowers, almost into a whisper, “ that you won’t go running to McGonagall. or worse — Flitwick. he actually likes us, and I’d rather not ruin that. ” he then tilts his head with a raised eyebrow. “ so what’s it gonna be, Evans? do you solemnly swear? ”
#james u have 5 seconds to whip that thing out or she's walking away#that thing refers to the map not ur dong... for now#[ unlovedsaints ]#[ ft: james potter ]#[ verse: sixth year ]

Lily is quite content to amble along the crowded street beside Remus, matching whatever pace he is capable of at the moment. "I suppose that's partially why I've been ignorant of places like this," she muses between licks and bites at her ice cream cone. "Can't imagine Cokeworth hiding anything as exciting as this." It's said only somewhat in jest. Her hometown is nowhere she plans to return to at the moment, no matter how many thinly veiled hints about the impropriety of "shacking up with her boyfriend" her mother might drop on her.
Remus' declaration makes Lily throw back her head, bright laughter escaping her lips. "I should tell him that. Give him an ultimatum that he has to take me traveling or else..." She winks at her friend, knowing full well that she'd never be able to enforce such a threat - and that there would be no need because James would acquiesce to any request she makes of him. "Do you have a favorite, of all the places you listed? It feels like I've seen so little of the magical world that I hardly know where to start."
he gave a bright smile as she commented that it was lovely . it was . && sometimes remus forgot how magical this world could be . now if everyone could just stop killing each other for five fecking minutes , it would be incredible . turning his head as he watched someone play a fiddle , remus then took a small bite of his own ice cream before then turning with lily . walking slowly . as much as it was nice to get out , he was UNFORTUNATELY still suffering from the effects of the full moon , but he was determined to have fun .
❝ mmhm ? oh , ❞ he tilted his head upwards . ❝ every major city has some sort of magical society . ❞ he shrugged . ❝ aberdeen , edinburgh , glasgow , birmingham , manchester , cardiff , inverness --- it's not just diagon alley in london . ❞ he gave a small pause then cleared his throat , looking over at lily as she ANNOUNCED that she had only really been to diagon alley , the ministry && hogwarts .
❝ well , james has got to start taking you places , ❞ he said with a chuckle . ❝ my mother loved edinburgh . she BROUGHT me here a lot growing up . she said it was the closest to londonderry she got . ❞

His dramatics earn him another eyeroll from Lily, all while she studiously ignores the pang in her chest at the sight of that trademark smirk. He just should not look so attractive when he's acting like a prat. It's unfair to women everywhere, particularly those who are modern and principled and determined not to just snap up any old bloke because society dictates this is what women ought to do. The fact that she finds James' dramatics endearing... Lily pushes that thought determinedly from her mind.
It's easier to do once he begins elaborating on the benefits of this map he's supposedly created, because the thing does sound intriguing. He's leaned close enough to her now that she can make out the flecks of green among brown in his eyes. Lily blinks twice to get her thoughts back on track and then rolls up her parchment scroll to clear space on their study table. "I'm a 'see it to believe it' sort of girl, Potter. Unless I witness this map with my own eyes, it's just another one of your tall tales. So..." She gestures towards the empty space on the table between them, watching him with a mixture of challenge and amusement in her bottle green eyes.
the corner of his lips twitch into a smirk as he catches the way her nose wrinkles in confusion. it's truly unfair, really -- how something so small can be so bloody endearing. his arms stay crossed, more out of necessity than comfort because some ridiculous, hopeless, part of him wants to reach out ... smooth a finger over her adorable fringe. “ oh, evans, ” he sighs dramatically once he manages to shake the thought off brushing her hair off his mind, “ --- so bright, so clever and yet ... so tragically limited by the Muggle definition of a map, ” he clicks his tongue and continues before she can properly glare at him, “ imagine ... a proper map that doesn't just show you what's there but it can also show you secret passageways, hidden rooms and exactly what's happening in each. ” he leans closer again, elbows pressed against her table. “ and most importantly ... it can show every single person in the castle, where they are, where they are going ... all in real time. ”
𝗝𝗮𝗺𝗲𝘀 watches her carefully as he let his words settle before leaning back against his chair again, stretching out his arms like he's not just casually dropping the most brilliant piece of magic she's probably ever heard of. “ so, Evans, ... still think its just a map? ”

Continued from here with @lupiinee
Lily's eyes were round with wonder as she followed Remus through the portal that led to this magical corner off Cockburn Street. From the fiddler on the corner to the origami cranes suspended magically in the sky, she didn't quite know where to look next. On closer inspection, she noticed the cranes each held a candle not unlike the ones suspended in Hogwarts' great hall. Just that little vision of home made her smile in happiness. Her eyes glowed in the candlelight as she turned to look at Remus. "It's absolutely lovely," she responded, accepting her ice cream with a grateful smile.
One bite of the minty chocolate flavor, and she was sighing in delight. "I've not been anywhere in the wizarding world except Diagon Alley and Hogsmeade. Well and now the Ministry," she added the last part as an afterthought, in reference to the job she'd begun only two days ago as a Potions researcher in the Department of Magical Accidents and Catastrophes. "How'd you find out about this place?"

There’s a strange feeling of relief in the back of Lily’s mind when James breaks eye contact. Now that they’re friendly, she’s finding that she likes looking at him a little too much for her comfort. This was all so much easier to deal with back when he was an arrogant berk who she could categorically deny herself the chance of being attracted to. But as she’s gotten to know him, particularly these chances to talk to him in private rather than in front of a crowd, Lily is realizing how much depth there is in those hazel eyes. How much warmth, humor, determination. All things she prizes highly.
When he leans in, she mirrors his body language almost without thinking and soon finds her eyebrows flying up past the fringe she currently sports. Not because she’s necessarily impressed. Just shocked. “You made a map of the castle? What’s so special about that? Or so secret?” Her nose wrinkles as she voices the question, confusion evident in her tone. The only image in her minds eye of a map is the kind she saw on the walls of her primary school classrooms in Cokeworth. Two dimensional drawings that perhaps relay the artistic skill of whoever drew them. But nothing more.
his smirk grows at her question, satisfied with himself that he's managed to at least draw another one from her and noting from the way her eyebrow is raised, it seems that he's not far off from a possible 'yes'. he is equally pleased, if not a little smug at the mention of their success in pulling off victory parties in their dorm without landing in trouble ... so far anyway. "maybe ... " he answers slowly, hazel eyes shifts its focus towards nothing ... anything but her beautiful green eyes. if he continues to let himself drown in them he might just forget what he's about to say ... and he’s far too proud of the secret he’s holding back to risk fumbling it now. the thought of sharing it with lily has his heart thundering in his chest. will she be impressed? 𝗝𝗮𝗺𝗲𝘀 leans in slightly, eyes darting side to side to make sure no one's listening before he continues with a lowered voice, "absolutely certain ... because we have a map." his hand moves, gesturing subtly as he continues his explanation in a hushed whisper, " and not just any map because we ... made it."
he leans back against his chair with arms crossed, tilting his head to the side. he's not going to let her know everything just yet ... not when he's certain she'll come with ... or at least promise she won't tell a soul. "so evans, you're not planning to go blabbing about this, are you? i don't know how i feel about letting you in on a big secret if i don't know where your loyalties lie?" he raises an eyebrow as though he's testing her.

Ever since her Hogwarts letter actually arrived, Lily has felt out of place in Cokeworth. For the past four summers, she'd been able to spend most of her time with Severus, either out enjoying the summer weather together or whizzing through their summer assignments. But this summer, she's returned home with.... no one. She's never speaking to Severus again, not after he called her that word. And with both of their parents working, it's often just she and Petunia at home during the day. On this particular day, they've been given the task of doing the shopping, and Lily had not imagined there were so many things to squabble about in a grocer's.
She doesn't want to let Petunia see the way her words have stung, so she tosses her long red hair over her shoulder and pushes the shopping cart ahead of her down the aisle. But Tuney's words follow her down the aisle, causing Lily to whirl on her heel and glare at her older sister. "Half the people at my school think I don't deserve to be there and would rather bar me at the gates," she hisses, green flames crackling in her eyes as her temper rises. "So excuse me for expecting that at the very least my own family would treat me better."
@lily-annette Lily says to Petunia: " it's impossible to get along with you "
𝗣𝗲𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗮 scoffs, “well you are foolish to think that i want to get along with you.” she looks at her sister with a roll of her eyes. in what little time she gets to see her sister, petunia tries her very best to be … at the very least civil. clearly she's failing at it. “i’m just stating my opinion! i don't always have to agree with you, lily,” she can feel the frustration building in her chest, can't help herself but to put focus on her sister's choice of words ... as though it’s her fault they don’t get along. of course, it would be. perfect Lily, with her perfect hair and her perfect school -- always the favorite, the special one. and Petunia? always the problem. "is that what your wretched school teaches you? that anyone who dares disagree with you is wrong ... so impossible to get along with?" she bites back, exaggerating her tone on specific words deliberately.

It's new, this whole "being on good terms" thing. Some things between them haven't changed - like their regular, ongoing banter with one another. But even that has a more jovial tone now. Her comments back to him have less of a biting edge. She's even willing to do homework with him, although that is mostly a selfish motivation. Although this year's final exams are relatively easy compared to last year's O.W.L.s, she is determined not to fall behind. She's gunning for that Head Girl badge, after all. And James, despite not being academically motivated, is a brilliant wizard. Having his insights readily at hand while completely her umpteenth essay this May has enabled Lily to finish her coursework more swiftly than doing it on her own, and thus has left more time for actual fun.
Fun like James is currently trying to wheedle her into. With one eyebrow raised nearly to her hairline, she leans back in her chair and crosses her arms over her chest, just beneath the Prefect badge pinned to it. Bottle green eyes regard him with a mixture of amusement and skepticism. "Would these tests you conducted be the reason why the victory parties in the common room included a few kegs of butterbeer after the last couple of matches?" she inquires, flushing slightly under the intensity of his gaze. She shouldn't like the twinkle in his eyes as much as she does, given what he's suggesting. "And you're absolutely certain we're not going to get caught sneaking into or out of this supposed secret passageway to The Three Broomsticks that you've found? And that no one else knows about it?" It isn't that Lily doesn't want to go. She'd love to relax with a warm butterbeer after a difficult day. But there are people in leadership - including the current Head Girl - who would love to find any excuse to catch a Mudblood like her so flagrantly flouting the rules and strip her of her hard-earned Prefect badge.
@lily-annette Lily says to James: "If your plan's so great, then why'd you wait to say it?"
𝗝𝗮𝗺𝗲𝘀 continues to flip his pen between two fingers as he tries to string together an excuse a reason, an answer for dear, sweet lily evans. hazel eyes remain on her, studying her intently until a lightbulb moment strikes him. it never takes him long to come up with a comeback; bantering with lily is one of his favourite pastimes after all. he likes to think its given him plenty of practice, enough to keep up with her every time. after all, it only make sense to be good at something you genuinely enjoy, doesn't it? a smirk curves his lips before he answers matter-of-factly, "because im trying to be more responsible, lily. i had to do my research first, test it out a few times ... " he let his words hang as he looks at her, feigning judgement in his gaze before he taps his pen on the table, "come on ... are you in or are you out? pads swore it's perfectly safe and foolproof!" he taps on his temple at the word ‘foolproof’ to emphasise just how well-thought-out their plans are. "just one butterbeer and we'll be back before anyone notices. cross my heart."
#[ unlovedsaints ]#[ ft: james potter ]#[ verse: sixth year ]#i was just thinking that what if she learns about the map!!!

Sideblog to/all follows back from @ofanswereddreams. Just tiptoeing my way into writing multiple fandoms/characters at once. Trying to see if Lily, my oldest muse, will wake up.
21+ only. Written and loved (for decades) by Amy (she/her/hers.) Anti JKR and any kind of bigotry and transphobia.
More details to come later but just so everyone knows, this blog will not be portraying the illustrious Lily Evans as a 1970s Hermione. She is not a rule follower who enjoys studying, spends most of her time in the library, or struggles to make friends. (Not shitting on Hermione for being any of those things!) Lily is cheeky and clever, fiercely loyal and very kind, always looking out for those who haven't found a place to belong.
