I still blame all of these on Ubisoft today.

I’m mad about James Kidd/Mary Read. No, it’s not because of her identity. In fact, I loved her even more after the big reveal. I’m mad because Mary lost her importance after we found out about her true identity. Before, she was in every other mission and she helped form the pirate republic. After the reveal, she disappears and doesn’t get important until she dies. We don’t even get to see her fight the Navy with Anne. We’re only told. Meanwhile as James Kidd, she gets to chase Templars and was about to kill them if not for Edward. It makes it seem like Mary can’t be important anymore because we know she’s not a man. For the rest of the story, she becomes relevant when Edward needs emotional trauma to get the plot going.
